Chapter 255
Chapter 255. Returning to the Northern Society
Outside Snow Bear City, the followers of the Church of the Goddess of the Currents said to their bishop:
“Your Grace, is it really all right for us to leave just like this? What if that chest was a fake?”
Gillian raised her head, turned back to look at the follower who had asked the question, and said slowly:
“Whether it was fake or not, we no longer have any way to interfere. The moment the Alliance shows that it wants something, we must learn to let go.”

What Gillian said was something many people within the church of the Goddess of the Currents also agreed with: they should avoid competing with the Alliance’s mages whenever possible, unless they had no choice but to do so.
The Alliance was powerful, but it was not interested in everything. It selectively fought for various resources, concentrating its strength on specific points.

Earlier, Fulan had only said that she had come on behalf of the Alliance, and that was precisely why Gillian had been so suspicious.
If the Alliance had truly wanted that thing, then it would have sent a large force long ago instead of dispatching only a single mage.
That was why she had deeply doubted whether Fulan had really come as the Alliance’s representative. But now, it seemed that everything Fulan had said was true.
“If the Alliance truly wanted that item, then with the Northern Society so close to us, they would absolutely be able to leave us completely helpless...”

Gillian then turned to look at the other two parties from that earlier meeting.
The beastmen had suffered the worst. Although they had sent in the fewest people, their proportion of deaths was the highest, and the dead were of the utmost importance.
Now, the only survivors were Benedict and a few other beastmen. All the rest had died. As for the corpse of their chieftain, Stanley, after the chaos and the blizzard, only half of it remained.
Benedict was a clever man. He knew that the best choice now was to get his tribe home as quickly as possible. That was the only way to minimize their losses.

They had already seen the chest, so they no longer needed to worry about punishment from the contract.
The mercenaries on the other side were thinking the same thing. The smart ones no longer wanted to remain in that place.

One could say that the moment this incident occurred, they immediately left the city without delaying for even an instant.
As for some of the mercenaries who still refused to give up, they believed that the chest Fulan had transported was a fake.
They thought the real chest was still somewhere inside Snow Bear Territory, so they remained there to continue searching.
No matter what, however, none of them could remain inside Snow Bear City any longer, because after those mages had descended from the sky, Fulan had personally walked over to them and said the following:
“Get the hell out of Snow Bear City right now!”
This time, Fulan had not stated what the punishment would be if they refused, as she had before.

But after seeing even the leader of those mages nod in agreement, everyone ran out of Snow Bear City at once.
Gillian looked back toward the distant Snow Bear City. She could see that the lord’s castle was now covered in far more frost. Then she turned away and led her forces back toward White Dragon Harbor.
That was the final outcome of this whole affair.
The experience of riding the flying craft was not very pleasant, especially for those who were not in the pilot’s position.
Fulan only felt that it shook so violently that it was even worse than the fastest speed of a galloping black horse.
If her Physique had not likewise been enhanced by the panel, she probably would have vomited on the flying craft on the spot.

But just because Fulan had not vomited did not mean Anna had not. Because of the noise of the wind rushing past during their high-speed flight, Fulan had not heard her vomiting.
Still, after they got off the craft, she saw that Anna could barely stand, that her face was deathly pale, and that there were still bits of residue at the corner of her mouth.

At once, she knew that Anna’s experience aboard the flying craft had not been a pleasant one.
After recovering slightly, Anna explained to Fulan why a first-tier professional like her had still vomited under such circumstances.
“I never want to ride one of those flying craft again for the rest of my life. I could feel those air currents scraping wildly across my body, and it made me feel awful.”
Anna was talking about what she could sense through the special organs unique to elves. She was deeply puzzled as to how those mages endured it.

“How did you not throw up?” At the same time, she was also curious why Fulan only looked to be in a bad mood, without showing any other particularly obvious reaction.
“Who knows? Maybe the elven organs inside me are a little special.” Fulan laughed it off, but this matter had taught her something else about the [Elven Combat Style] on her panel.
That ability did not merely grant her some elven organ that might or might not exist.
It simply allowed her to fight the way elves did. Aside from that, she had none of the positive or negative effects that actual elves possessed.

She had Zane take Anna to find a place to stay and help her secure a permit to enter the city.
As for herself, she first needed to go see Elise, the Society President of the Northern Society. That was not only to report that she was safe, but also because...

“Fulan, the Society President is looking for you. Go see her at once.” Just as Fulan returned to the Northern Society, Dylan came running over and said exactly that to her.
And so, the first place Fulan went after returning to the Northern Society was Elise’s office.
She still had many things to deal with.
For example, she needed to go to the Battle Mage Corps and exchange her rewards for new spells.
She had completed the mission in Snow Bear Territory, and the Battle Merits she had earned were probably enough to exchange for three spells.
And having brought back that chest and completed the Battle Mage Corps’ task, she would naturally receive another reward as well, though it would take some time before it was settled.

When that time came, another sum of Battle Merits would be credited to her account. As for whether she would exchange them for spells or some rare materials, that could wait until then.
Then there was the paper she had published. Not the one about refining White Star Sand, but the one she had written, “A Mathematical Analysis of Fireball.”
Even now, she had no idea what had become of that paper. Had it been neglected because people here did not value mathematics, so that hardly anyone knew of it?
Or had someone with a discerning eye recognized its worth, and it had already become known among all the mages of the Northern Society?
In any case, she knew nothing about its current status. She would have to wait until she checked the Mana Communication System herself.
Then there was the Trait [Aether Manipulation] she had obtained from the Deep-Sea Golden Dragon.

She remembered that its description had said that only dragons and a small number of mages knew about it, so perhaps she could investigate related knowledge.
And lastly, there was Anna’s situation. To be honest, Fulan wanted to assign her to the matter of bringing new followers to the Lord of Radiance.

But that matter could wait for a while. She still had many other things to take care of first, so there was no rush.
Fulan strode into the Mage Tower, then climbed more than ten flights of stairs until she reached the Society President’s room.
She knocked three times, then pushed the door open and walked in, only to see Elise seated in a chair with a small booklet in her hands.
The title of the booklet was “The Foundation of a Great Cause—An Explanation of A Mathematical Analysis of Fireball.”

P.S. Uploading three chapters every day is a bit troublesome, so starting tomorrow I’ll change it to two chapters.
Each chapter will be 3,000 words, so it will still be 6,000 words per day and save a little upload time.
