The instant the trigger was pulled, the screen turned black except for a white block positioned where the target was.
The light sensor inside the gun would then determine whether the shot hit.

Lin Lixin connected the pistol to the NovaBox port and inserted the Wolfenstein 3D disk.
As he rotated the pistol in his hand, the in-game camera turned with it.
“We’re using a horizontal acceleration sensor.”
Wolfenstein 3D differed subtly from traditional shooting games.
Hit detection wasn’t based on where you aimed.
It was based on where the camera was facing.

As long as the enemy stood directly ahead, it counted as a hit.
That realization gave Lin Lixin inspiration.
He could slightly modify the concept of the light gun and transform it into a pure input device.
Their “light gun” was more like a strangely shaped controller equipped with acceleration sensors.
The biggest advantage of this design was that it avoided the expensive recognition and decoding overhead required by optical guns.
And it also bypassed the Zapper’s greatest flaw.

Housewives obviously preferred letting their children play bright, cheerful games like Super Mario rather than running around the living room holding pistols and screaming while shooting people.
