Chapter 10 : An Unexpected Stroke of Luck

When Unibel opened her eyes, she was on the school rooftop.

“You finally awake?”

“...Ow.”

She tried to sit up on reflex and winced as a dull ache throbbed through her skull.

What was I doing again?

She’d followed the teacher’s orders, baited the giant reaper-shaped shadow beast, and after that—

“Right! What happened to that thing?”

“I took care of it. Also, when I say ‘run,’ who told you to charge straight in like a maniac?”

“I figured that was the most reliable way.”

Unibel scratched her head at Woo-jin, who was sitting beside her—then immediately yelped when her fingers brushed the enormous bump there.

“Anyway. Thanks. You saved my neck.”

“You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?”

“Obviously.”

When he reached over to ruffle the part of her head with the swelling, Unibel shot him a glare. He just grinned, all teasing. Heat crept up her cheeks and she turned away.

To Unibel, other people had mostly been… people to protect. That included adults older than her—like the teacher right in front of her.

He’s really a strange one.

Sometimes he acted like a mischievous kid; other times, when it mattered, he was more dependable than any adult she knew. There was the teacher who chatted gently with students, and there was the teacher who didn’t flinch even before the ugliest monsters in the magical world.

Е́ṅ ũ m̈ ӑ.

So which one is the real him? Are all adults like this? she wondered, watching him look up at the sky from the corner of her eye.

He didn’t have magic like she did. He had no powers at all. Normally, any ordinary person would see a monster and bolt. But he had stepped out front, even ahead of a magical girl, and cleared a path.

It wasn’t reckless bravado. He analyzed and sized up the situation, then moved with sharp calculations and guesses that kept proving right. Even luring out and beating that huge shadow reaper Unibel couldn’t handle—he’d orchestrated it.

He can already see everything, she thought. What the monster is, what its weakness is—everything.

The teacher had said it himself: he’d been through things like this before.

Unibel suddenly realized she wanted to know who Lee Woo-jin really was.

What kind of path did he walk to end up like this? In some world no one knows, did he fight alone this hard—hard enough that today doesn’t even register as a crisis?

“What’s got you thinking so hard?”

“Ah—n-no, nothing!”

His sudden question made her jump. He watched her for a beat, puzzled, then burst into laughter.

Unibel’s gaze drifted upward.

White clouds. A night sky packed with glittering stars. And a big, swollen full moon lighting the entire rooftop.

Е n ǔm̈a

…Isn’t that way too big?

The full moon that should’ve been far away was hanging just above the roof, close enough she felt she could reach it if she stretched out her hand. Thanks to the red Otherworld Barrier, the moon even looked red. It wasn’t beautiful. It was unsettling. The moonlight wasn’t gentle anymore.

Unibel shot to her feet.

Other things were off too. The rooftop was too wide. It was her first time up here, but there was no way it should be bigger than the athletic field. And there were almost no shadows. Maybe because the moonlight was several times stronger than usual—there was no building shadow, no shadow from the central water tank, not even Unibel’s own shadow.

Void!

She remembered what she’d forgotten. Why were they heading to the rooftop in the first place? Because the teacher had said the culprit would be up here.

Е̃ n̆um̃а

It wasn’t over.

Her eyes sharpened. The loosened tension returned. Her heartbeat picked up. Scanning quickly, she caught sight of something strange.

A shadow.

In a place scrubbed clean of shadows by the moon, something that shouldn’t exist lay on the ground—without any object to cast it.

If her guess was right, that was the one who’d twisted her school like this. The King of Shadows. Void.

“Easy. It doesn’t look like it’s going to attack right this second.”

Woo-jin stopped her before she could head for the shadow opposite the rooftop door. When she looked up at him, his face wasn’t like before; it was unreadable.

If he knows what that shadow is, then he probably knows how to deal with it, she thought. Like how he beat the monster downstairs with that ridiculous trick.

Unibel’s eyes focused on his mouth.

What’s he going to say?

She swallowed without meaning to.

“Well, first…”

“First?”

“Why don’t we sit and rest a bit?”

“Uh… what?”

Moonlight too bright to be natural poured across the rooftop. Unibel and Woo-jin sat side by side, leaning back against the wall.

“I don’t know if we should really be doing this,” she said.

“Save your strength when you can. We haven’t rested once since we started climbing.”

“I mean, that’s true, but…”

Even with the “boss” right there, Woo-jin insisted they rest. Unibel tilted her head, then closed her eyes. Leaning her head against the wall, she drifted off.

“Midnight, huh.”

Woo-jin checked his phone and let out a short sigh. If things followed the original story, another magical girl should be arriving around now.

He glanced at Unibel, breathing soft and even, then looked back toward Void.

Е n̄ū m а́.і̌ d

Void’s rank: Comet-class. A swarm-type monster that manipulates shadows to create Residue and turns an area into its territory. Its core strength wasn’t that impressive. The problem was its matchup with Unibel.

Not just bad—terrible. Probably set up that way to throw the protagonist her first real trial after smooth sailing. On the other hand, it matched up decently with the other magical girl who was supposed to be coming. In the original, while Unibel struggled against Void and the Harvester, the newcomer cut through and saved her in an instant.

“Not getting any signs she’s coming.”

He’d half expected this. From the moment they beat the enemy on the fourth floor and walked up to the roof, he’d had a bad feeling. Before he came to this world, he’d run into girls about to jump—seven times, on seven different school rooftops. Woo-jin’s gut rarely missed.

If he felt uneasy, something would happen. And usually, it wouldn’t be good for him.

Grrk.

Wе̌ b̈ n о v е l Ĕ n̆ũ m̂ а̂

A Residue slipped out of the massive shadow ahead. This one was shaped like a dog—if he remembered right, that was a faster variant than the others, a Chaser.

The Residue sank into Void’s shadow and vanished, likely dispatched to search the building for them.

Woo-jin felt nothing in particular. Ordinary shadows couldn’t climb to a rooftop like this where shadows barely existed. The only one that ignored light was the Harvester, and they’d already taken that down.

Let’s watch a little longer.

Unibel still needed the rest. Even if she had magic and a tough body, she was still a middle schooler who’d wandered a haunted school for hours and fought a giant monster minutes ago. She’d hidden it well, but she had to be at her limit. The way she’d fallen asleep the instant she had a moment proved it.

I’m a little worn out too.

Woo-jin let his eyes drift shut. If Void had sent out a Chaser, it meant it didn’t know their exact position yet. He couldn’t sleep as soundly as Unibel, but a quick doze should be fine—

The alarm in his head blared.

He moved before he could think, scooping up the sleeping Unibel and hurling both of them to the side.

Bang!

A deafening impact cracked the spot where they’d been, punching a gaping hole through the roof.

“Kyaaa!?”

W̃ е b̀ ňо̃ v̂ѐl̂ Ēn̂ u m̂ а̃

Unibel shrieked, jolted awake mid-fall. Woo-jin was just as rattled.

It attacked first?

He’d assumed Void’s core was weak enough that it wouldn’t open hostilities. That assumption shattered. In the original, Void stayed still until Unibel struck first. Then he realized—this time, there was no Harvester.

No subordinate to do the fighting. Which meant it was willing to risk itself to remove them directly. One way or another, this was going to end now.

“I don’t really get it, but I just have to attack there, right?”

Unibel slid out of his arms, staff in hand, and launched familiar flames. Woo-jin grimaced inwardly. That shadow wasn’t Void’s core.

Wе̃bṅ о̇v̄ е l Еñ um а̌

As expected, her blast roared out and burned… empty air. The shadow remained even after the fire died, and Unibel’s face tightened. She’d fought enemies resistant to magic before, but an enemy her magic didn’t touch at all—that was new.

Void wasn’t like the monsters she’d faced so far. Unless you understood its structure and its core, you could pound on it for days and never land a hit.

In truth, Void’s body wasn’t big. Not “not big”—small. In the original, it was described as fitting in a girl’s palm. From an adult like Woo-jin’s perspective, about the size of a baseball.

So where was Void now?

The roof, definitely. Void liked places where shadows stretched long. In this school, nowhere would make longer shadows than the roof.

Which means…The shadows are back.

Ŵѐ b̂n̊ о́v́еl Е̌_n̊_ù m̂ а́

Darkness fell over his head. He glanced back—shadows that hadn’t been there a moment ago now stretched long: the building’s outline, the guardrail, even the water tank. Under that swollen, hanging moon, every shadow ran oddly long, filling more than half the football-field-sized roof.

Void lived in shadows and controlled them. Every shadow here was within its reach.

“Don’t step too far into the dark!”

“Y-yes!”

He warned Unibel, then raised his own guard. All of Void’s attacks came through shadow. No sound. No warning. The only reason they dodged the ambush earlier was half luck.

His “sense” wasn’t some combat buff that pinged enemy tells and let him parry on time. It was more like packing an umbrella because it feels like rain today—and then it actually rained. He couldn’t count on that kind of luck twice.

He focused on his eyes. If he couldn’t trust his ears or his hunch, he’d trust what he could see. Whether he could catch anything in that darkness was another matter, but he had no better option.

…Wait.

Something was wrong.

Since when are shadows white?

Shadows were made when light couldn’t pass through an object. They couldn’t have color. Shadows were always black. A kindergartner knew that. Yet the darkness that had been so deep a moment ago looked white to him now—like pale smoke pushed by the wind, a milky haze filling his vision.

Red.

Еṅ um а

Through that blizzard of blur, a single red point flickered. It rushed in, sharpening to a deep, blood-colored spike.

A spear of shadow.

No sound. Even watching it, he couldn’t tell where it had come from.

…I dodged it?

He did. Not by instinct, not by luck—by timing.

Another red point winked on in his vision. Woo-jin smiled, faint but certain.

Ẁ е́b́n̂ оvёl̆ Ѐ n̈ ũṁ а̀

He’d found a thread to pull—finally, a way to crack Void.
