Chapter 16 : Eh, It’s Not Hard. I’ll Go—To School.
Apparently, even without transforming, a magical girl can outclass any normal human. Woo-jin learned that thirty seconds after the barrier fell.
“So?”
Ha-ran reappeared in front of him, having taken care of the monster that popped up behind the stands—a Hedgehog—faster than a blink.
That one’s actually tricky…
True to its name, Hedgehog looked like a hulking porcupine. Its blade-like quills blocked close-range attacks; trying to brawl with it was basically suicide.
Ёṅǔm а̌.і̌ d̄.
Ha-ran didn’t use magic. She just kicked it to pieces.
So yeah—different league from Unibel in terms of experience.

Woo-jin studied the girl standing before him. Still in her stage outfit, Ha-ran was looking at him with open hostility.
Not what he’d hoped for.
He’d expected some caution—Ha-ran didn’t trust people—but this was more like she was staring down an enemy.
Oh. Right.

As he traced back what could’ve set her off, one possibility clicked. In the later arc of the original story, “mimic” monsters appeared—those that disguised themselves as humans. And right now, Woo-jin was just… strolling around inside a magical girl’s Otherworld Barrier.
If Ha-ran had ever fought or even heard of a mimic, mistaking him for one made sense.
Great.
Mimics didn’t show up until the mid-to-late game. He hadn’t planned for this—his mistake. If he had, he would’ve approached a lot more carefully.

…So what now?
If he said “I’m not a monster,” she’d only get more suspicious.
Én̆u m̃ a
A headache started up behind his eyes.
Ha-ran wasn’t calm either.
He knew before my ring went off.
She remembered it clearly: he reacted to the monster before the ring on her left hand flashed.
And she had no idea how he’d sensed it.
“What are you, really?”

Her right leg slid back a hair, ready to launch the first strike if she needed to.
…Do I transform?
If she transformed, she’d be several times stronger. But the time it took nagged at her.
0.3 seconds. Nothing to a normal person—barely enough to blink. In a magical girl’s world, it was long enough to attack three times.
That was why she’d handled Hedgehog bare-handed.
No. Too risky.

She shook her head. All she could see was herself getting clipped in that gap.
“...‘What’?”

“Don’t play dumb. A normal human can’t notice a monster faster than me. How’d you do it?”
And then Woo-jin realized exactly how this mess had started.
Ever since the fight with the Voids, something in him had awakened. When he’d glanced at the wall earlier, a big red circle had flickered there—just like on the school rooftop. He’d stared without thinking. To Ha-ran, that had looked suspicious as hell.
If I say ‘instinct,’ she’ll never buy it.

Her eyes hadn’t blinked once. She wasn’t going to miss a single tell. If he kept his mouth shut, that devastating kick that punted a six-foot Hedgehog might come his way.
“Shouldn’t you drop the barrier first?”
In the end, he chose to deflect, blatantly.
An Otherworld Barrier severed space and built a new plane. Nothing inside touched the normal world—but time still moved. She’d been on break a while now. For one of twenty thousand audience members, disappearing was whatever; for Seol Ha-ran, the headliner, it was a problem. Staff were probably already scrambling to find her.

“Tch.”
Ha-ran clicked her tongue and snapped her fingers.

Blue twilight warmed to red; the hush broke into noise. The barrier dissolved. A staffer sprinted over the second he spotted her.
“Only two minutes till you’re back on!”
“Already!?”
She half-jogged away with the staffer, but looked back like she hated to leave. “Stay here till the end!” she yelled.
Woo-jin had no intention of doing that. This wasn’t how he’d pictured it, but he’d at least gotten her attention.
He could untangle the rest—with Unibel’s help—later.

“I should make sure I never run into her alone.”
Because right now? He wasn’t sure he’d walk away in one piece.
On his way toward the exit, Woo-jin thought about his eyes.
What are these, really? At first, he’d assumed it just let him sense invisible attacks. This time felt different. Less detection, more prediction.
It flagged the timing of an enemy’s arrival, painted a red marker—and when danger passed, the color faded.
Is that all it can do?

He couldn’t shake the feeling there was more to it.
“Hustle!”

“Right!”
Woo-jin stopped short.
Off to the side of the stage, a tech on a ladder was swapping a stage light. From the look of it, something had failed and they were rushing a replacement.
The ladder was five, maybe six meters high. The guy at the top looked shaky even from here.

Woo-jin glanced at the crowd. Everyone was glued to Ha-ran, who’d just stepped back on stage.
…Guess I have to.
He moved toward the ladder, planning to brace it before anything happened.
“Hey! Is the light swap done?”

“Almost!”
The scheduled accident arrived.

Spurred by the shout, the tech rushed. The light slipped from his hands. That wasn’t so bad by itself—small fixture, not too heavy. As long as it didn’t hit anyone, no serious injuries.
But the tech panicked. He lunged to catch it, shifting his center of gravity backward.
The wobbly ladder bucked hard—and tipped toward the seats.
“He’s gonna fall!”
And of course the direction he fell was toward the audience.
Damn it.

Woo-jin moved on reflex. The ladder went down, the man with it, and Woo-jin threw his weight forward.
Crash!
The impact rattled his bones.
Catching a grown man well over seventy kilos from six meters up with your bare body—yeah, that was stupid. His arm and chest, where the load hit, screamed every time he breathed.
“A-are you okay!?”
A staffer ran up, face pale. Behind him, the ladder lay sprawled—at least it looked like Woo-jin had managed to kick it so it fell away from the crowd.

“Shouldn’t we call emergency services?”
“He looks really hurt.”

The murmur from the seats pressed in. Woo-jin pushed himself upright. His leg was slick with blood—he must’ve scraped it when he’d kicked the ladder aside.
Figures it stung like hell.
“No need for an ambulance.”
He brushed off the hands trying to help. The ticket was from his little sister. If it got out that her brother caused a scene at this concert, she’d blame herself all week.

He wanted this quiet.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
A voice caught him as he tried to leave through the ring of people.
Ha-ran, already down from the stage.

“Forget the accident. Everyone, please remain calm and stay seated until we’ve handled it.”
The crowd buzzed even harder at the star suddenly in their midst—then, as her voice rolled through the mic, the noise smoothed out like nothing had happened.

Figures.
So this was Seol Ha-ran’s “charm”—the power to catch people’s hearts. The name sounded cute, but the substance was a kind of ability. A warped wish she’d made to Moongmoong. Normal people just didn’t refuse Ha-ran’s requests or orders.
“...You look like a disaster.”
Her brow twitched as she swept her eyes over him. His elbow was swollen at a weird angle; his breathing hitched like ribs might be cracked. There was no way he could walk this off.
Ha-ran was confused.
What is he, really?

She’d thought “mimic monster in disguise.” But he’d leapt to save someone and wrecked himself doing it. If he were a monster, catching a falling man wouldn’t have torn him up this badly.
“I’m calling an ambulance. Don’t move.”
Think later. First, keep this guy from keeling over.
She turned to flag a staffer.
“Don’t. I don’t need it.”
Woo-jin shook his head, teeth clenched. Thanks to Ha-ran, the commotion hadn’t spread. If he just made it to a clinic, he could pass the injuries off as something else and do outpatient care.

“What an idiot.”
Her fist thumped his gut, not hard enough to break anything—just enough to fold him.

“...Why am I doing this?”
She dumped the man onto a cot in the venue’s infirmary. The stink of blood had soaked into her shoulder and made her skin crawl.
“So he’s not a monster after all?”
W̌еb̆ n о̂v́ e l̇ Ê n ǔ m̌а
Ha-ran watched him, limbs sprawled, out cold. Every so often he winced and groaned like the pain gnawed at him. He looked painfully human. Maybe it had all been coincidence.
But then why had he existed inside her barrier just fine? And why had he stayed so calm facing a monster?
“He doesn’t seem like a bad guy.”
Normal people didn’t risk themselves like that. Exceptions existed—if helping cost them nothing, or if they were just a thoughtless fool.

Judging by his state, he was clearly the latter.
“Looks like you’re waking up.”
Е̄n ü m̆ ӓ
She stood as his body twitched. Once he came to, she’d tell someone to take him to a hospital.
Except—
Fwoom.
“...Huh?”
Blue fire, soft and steady, wreathed his wounds. Ha-ran had no words.

“You awake?”
I opened my eyes to an unfamiliar ceiling. Not a school nurse’s office—this was the venue’s infirmary.
“You should be grateful. I carried you here.”
Ha-ran sat at the foot of the bed. Her shoulder was damp and dark with my blood.
I was honestly surprised. Seol Ha-ran—that Seol Ha-ran—had been this kind.
“Thanks.”

“If you’re that obedient, it’s almost awkward.”
We were alone. She must’ve cleared the room to avoid rumors. Her ability really was busted—in the overpowered sense. Not that she enjoyed it.

“Doesn’t hurt much.”
I pushed myself up. The crushing ache in my chest, the dull throb in my arm, the burning scrape on my leg—all of it had faded like a bad dream.
“Judging by your face, you don’t know what just happened either.”
“What?”
Е̂nû m̀ ǎ
“Never mind. My business.”
She stepped away from the bed and turned.
“Anyway,” she said, tossing it out like an afterthought, “you said you came to tell me something, right? No one’s here. I’ll listen.”
Maybe it was my imagination, but she felt… softer than before. Maybe I could push this a little.

I chose my words carefully. What would land the hardest?
Guess there’s only one option.

“Ahem. Then, without further ado—Seol Ha-ran, Class 1–3, Student No. 17, Hwaryeon Middle School.”
“...Huh?”
“You haven’t attended once since the entrance ceremony. You’ve exceeded thirty absences. At this rate, you’re repeating the year. Report to school immediately and start participating in class. Message from your homeroom teacher.”
“...That’s what you came to say?”
Her mouth fell open as she stared at me—more kid-like than I’d ever seen her, and it almost made me laugh.
“What other reason would a teacher have to show up at his student’s concert?”

“...That’s really it?”
“Even if celebs don’t need fancy degrees anymore, dropping out after grade school is a bit much. At least finish high school.”
The moment I finished—
“Pfft—hah! Hahaha!”
She broke into helpless laughter, clutching her stomach like any other girl her age.
“I thought it was something dire. That’s it? Fine. I’ll go. School. Not exactly hard.”
Е n̆u̇ m а̂
“Uh… okay? Do that.”
Her easy answer threw me. In the original, she’d avoided school because she hated attention.

“Ohhh, so that’s why. No wonder he took an interest.”
She nodded to herself like something had finally clicked. Which, honestly, made me nervous.
It was probably fine… right?
