Chapter 2 : Final Boss From the Start
Lee Woo-jin.
That was the name of the guy I’d ended up in.
This was his first year teaching. And—whether by chance or fate—he was also homeroom teacher to the protagonist, Shin Ga-yeon.
After school, I ducked into a nearby café to figure out my next move. I couldn’t go “home.” I didn’t even know the address.
The place was packed with kids grabbing a drink before cram school and office workers sneaking a break. Total accident I wandered in here, but apparently this was the neighborhood’s hot spot.

“From the outside, it looks like a normal world.”
I still couldn’t grasp it—the fact that this perfectly peaceful daily life would collapse in a few months.

I pictured magical girls flying through the sky, hurling spells without caring what they hit. Not the cutesy “love and justice, heart-sparkle!” stuff you see in preschool shows. Fire and ice tearing through streets, the kind that kills a normal person if it just grazes them. Nothing about it was adorable.
“Magical girls, huh…”
I never thought I’d be talking about that at my age.
The reason I figured out Magical Girl Happy Life so fast wasn’t random. Before I ever became a teacher, when I worked as a hagwon instructor, it was the thing. Elementary girls lived for magical girls, and as a teacher trying to connect, you learned the basics. That was all it was to me.

I still remember one kid. This was at the peak of the “study ahead” craze. She was in elementary school and had already finished previewing all the way through ninth-grade material. Ten different after-school academies. Her parents’ ambitions forced her to live a schedule that would break some adults. She didn’t watch any of the anime or read the manga other kids loved, so she couldn’t join their conversations at all.
But a proud elementary schooler doesn’t admit that. She called magical-girl shows childish and isolated herself.
So I got her the limited-edition DVD of Magical Girl Happy Life—a gift from an adult who said, “It’s not childish. It’s actually good.” I wanted to protect her pride and give her a way back into the group.
It worked. After that day, the kid who’d looked like a dead doll now smiled from time to time. If the story had ended there, I could’ve shouted hooray for magical girls.

Except there was a tiny problem.
The show I recommended wasn’t a normal magical-girl series.

It followed the usual tropes at first, then halfway through—huh?—and by the end it went full dystopian hardcore.
Hooray my ass.
Her parents called and tore me to pieces. Emotional abuse, exposing children to something weird—the usual.
So Magical Girl Happy Life became unforgettable to me, for life. I know the original inside and out. Unibel’s future movements, the events to come, the enemies to avoid.
Most of all, the thing you must avoid: magical girl death flags. Friend or foe, doesn’t matter. In this story, there’s only one true villain.
So… what now?

I knew what I had to do.
Somehow, as a normal guy, I had to join the main plot.
Even if I wanted to use my meta knowledge, nothing mattered if I stayed outside the event radius.
Which meant I needed to get close to Shin Ga-yeon—Unibel—fast.
The problem was how.
As her homeroom teacher, I could build rapport. The “solo remedial student” excuse gave me easy access. But that would only get me close to an ordinary middle schooler named Shin Ga-yeon, not the Unibel I actually needed to reach.

Hide at a monster scene ahead of time.
That was plan one: pretend to get caught up as a bystander and use it to bond with Unibel.

But even that had an issue.
Unibel hates it when civilians get hurt. She became a magical girl because she couldn’t stand seeing ordinary people suffer. If I forced myself into a fight, she’d just hustle me far away to keep me safe. Useless.
Isn’t the whole point of body-hopping stories that you get a perk or a talent?
I tried a bunch of things. No special power flickered to life. All I had was meta knowledge, which made me barely different from any other civilian.

“No use overthinking it.”
I stood. It was almost time.
Otherworld Barrier.
Beyond the blue afternoon sky, a clearly alien red space floated into view.

A magical girl’s battlefield, copied from a slice of the world.
And like the rules always go in fiction, normal people can’t see it—can’t even recognize it exists.

“My bad feelings just don’t miss, do they.”
At this point I couldn’t tell if that was a blessing or a curse.

Under a sky soaked in red, a girl and a mysterious creature faced a wolf made of black shadow.
“Unibel, on your right!”
At the creature’s shout, the pink-haired girl dived to the side. For a kid that age, she moved impossibly fast. The wolf was no slouch either.

She slipped past the claws by a hair and thrust her staff forward.
“Flare Burst!”
A sphere of red fire blinked into existence and shot toward the wolf.
Boom!
It was the size and sound of a household gas explosion. Flames roared up through what had been a quiet vacant lot.
“Arf!”

The wolf, charging straight through the blast radius, surged in again with its fangs bared.
“Unibel!”

“I’m fine!”
Even with a beast twice her size barreling down, she didn’t flinch. Determined to land the hit this time, she jammed her staff toward the wolf’s gaping jaws.
“Flare Burst!”
The fireball launched at point-blank range. Even that speed couldn’t dodge a spell fired with inches to spare. The wolf plunged straight into the flames and howled out its death cry.

“Did I… get it?”
—Unibel. That’s the kind of line that sets up a stronger revival. Careful.
“Ah.”
Startled, the girl clapped a hand over her mouth.

This fight had been rough for her. A second slower and she would’ve been hurt badly. She won by luck, not margin. If the same scenario played out again, the outcome wouldn’t be guaranteed.
“…So it’s over, right?”
Е̄ṅ ŭ ṁ ӓ
—You did it, Unibel! You win!
When the flames finally died, a clear, star-shaped crystal remained. About the length of a pinky finger. Unibel picked it up carefully.
—Amazing, Unibel! You’ve barely started as a magical girl and you already caught a Comet-class.
“That’s a big deal?”
—Of course. Most magical girls struggle with even Meteor-class. In other words, you’re a real prodigy!
The creature laid it on thick, and the girl scratched her cheek. Comets, meteors—she still couldn’t quite feel what it meant. She was a fledgling magical girl; she was just doing what she could for other people.

“I should head home.”
Unibel checked the time on her phone and released her transformation. The barrier fell, the blue sky snapped back into place, and the lot looked like nothing had happened. She knew it was thanks to the creature’s Otherworld Barrier, but it still felt surreal every time.
“Come here.”
She tucked the star crystal—“Starlight”—gently into her bag and called the creature back over.
According to the partner who’d made her a magical girl, Moongmoong, monsters appeared in the human world because of cracks between two dimensions. The Starlight she was collecting was how they’d mend those rifts.
Until then, I’ll work hard.

She clenched a fist and made a silent promise. If Moongmoong was right, she had talent. She had a way to help people in danger.
So she had to do it—no matter how hard or painful it would be.

Because she was the only one who could.
“Moongmoong?”
She called again. The creature who never left her side was, for once, staring from far away at a patch of darkness. She followed its gaze, but saw nothing except a creepy, unlit corner.
—Unibel.

“Yeah?”
—…No, it’s nothing.
Moongmoong shook its head and zipped back to her shoulder. Even as it said “nothing,” its eyes never left that same direction.
“If something’s wrong, I can help.”

I’m really fine. Let’s go home. I’m hungry.

“Huh. That was… impressive, on multiple levels.”
I’d watched the whole thing live. Flames bursting from the hands of a girl who’d just barely stopped being a kid—that was one thing. The outfit’s… boldness was another.
What was I thinking, recommending this show?
I was starting to sympathize with that angry parent. On-screen, the fanservice hadn’t really registered. In person, it was… a lot. More skin than fabric. Honestly, it looked more like a swimsuit than clothes.
Which led to another stupid worry.
What if I met her transformed and got so embarrassed I ran away? The original even had a scene where she blushed when a non–magical girl saw her like this.

“Well, that’s a problem for later.”
I stepped out from behind the tree. Looked like I’d been made.
“—Who are you?”
Moonlight slipped free of the clouds and lit up the center of the lot. The creature who should’ve been walking home with Unibel stared at me with those red eyes. Not a shock. I already knew its body wasn’t just one body.
“That’s my line.”
—Is that supposed to be an answer?

“Why should I give you a serious one?”
I shrugged at Moongmoong tilting its head. Whatever I said, it was going to do the same thing anyway.

—…Fair enough.
The main villain of Magical Girl Happy Life. The true final boss.
Moongmoong’s tail swished back and forth.
