Chapter 33 : Conviction
Ever since I’d been thrown into this world, there was one question that had never stopped bothering me.
When you’re faced with a situation that can only end if one side kills the other, what is the right choice?
Against an enemy that comes at you with endless killing intent, using every means available, you can’t cling to non-lethality forever. Eventually, there comes a moment when you have to fight with everything you have—seriously, sincerely—and just like in the original story, the protagonist will walk the path of slaughter after countless trials.
In a world where survival demands that you devour one another, that was the natural flow.
The enemy had tried to kill you. They had already killed innocent civilians. They were unmistakable evil. No one would blame you for destroying evil to survive.

The protagonist, Unibel, is weak.
She’s timid, cries easily, lacks decisiveness, and wavers so much that she makes fatal mistakes at critical moments. In the original story, many people were injured or killed because of those flaws.

In a way, she was the perfect fit for the title of “magical girl protagonist.”
Because of that, I’d once entertained a thought.
For Unibel’s mental growth, maybe some sacrifices were unavoidable.
If repeated trials forged her into a true protagonist, then she’d be able to protect comrades she would otherwise lose. And with my knowledge of the original story backing her up, even a Heaven-Slayer–class extermination—once thought impossible—might actually be within reach.
Èn̄ u̇ ḿа
That was the proper path.
The easiest path. The most efficient path.
There was no reason to abandon such a good option and choose an uncertain, personal detour instead.
At least, that’s how it would’ve been—

If I weren’t a teacher, but just another reincarnator who lived an ordinary life and died.
If the “correct” path was paved with children’s tears, then I could never choose it. Not in a thousand lifetimes.
Е̊ n̂ ú m̆ӑ
You can’t call someone a teacher if they watch students die, turn away from crying children, and smile while calling it “normal growth.”
“I want to become a teacher.”
That was my answer, long ago, when a girl asked me what my wish was.
So at the very least, until the day I met her again, shouldn’t I live without shame beneath the sky?
“No. There is another way.”
That was why I stepped into a battle whose outcome had already been decided.

In the world of magical girls, there are a few unspoken rules.
One: never deploy an Otherworld Barrier in the same space as another. The backlash between barriers causes catastrophic internal damage—it’s practically suicide.
Two: never enter someone else’s barrier.
The reason was simple. The difference between the magical girl who ruled the domain and the one who didn’t was the difference between heaven and earth. Most would rather break the first rule and self-destruct than step into another’s territory.
“Hah. There’s a limit to how much you can underestimate someone.”

So when Ayla heard the proposal from the man who had suddenly entered the battlefield, all she could feel was disbelief.
He was saying she could deploy her barrier—and they’d fight inside it.

To Ayla, who knew exactly how powerful a magical girl became within her own domain, it sounded like playing chess while giving up your queen, rooks, and knights.
Her gaze shifted to the man in front of her.
His face was more than half-hidden by a mask and hat, but Ayla wasn’t naïve enough to miss who he really was—Eve’s brother, her original target.
Eve seemed to realize it too.

The raging waves of mana she’d been emitting earlier had noticeably calmed.
The interruption was clearly unexpected even for her; a crack appeared in her previously icy expression.
…Wait.
Ayla had almost snapped back in anger, but after thinking it through, the proposal wasn’t bad for her at all. Losing the leverage of civilian hostages was a shame, but Eve had already made up her mind to kill her anyway.

For someone waiting on a future where death was guaranteed, there was no reason to refuse.
The only unsettling part was how a mere ordinary man could know so much about the magical girl ecosystem.
Е̌ nŭ m̄а́
Guess that loud-mouthed bitch talked too much.
Considering he was a magical girl’s family member, it wasn’t entirely implausible. If he’d discovered Eve’s identity by chance and talked with her about these things, it made sense.
Just as the intel said.
Eve’s brother was the type to meddle in matters that had nothing to do with him.
Some might call that kindness. To Ayla, it was just stupidity.
He didn’t understand how important territory was in a magical girl’s world. For the sake of something as trivial as civilian safety, he was about to push his own sister off a cliff with his own hands.

Eve looked back and forth between Ayla and the man, then slowly lowered her sword and stepped back.
Ayla’s eyes widened in shock.
She was really going to accept this insane proposal?
Is she that confident in her skills…!?
Humiliation burned through Ayla’s nerves.
She’d been pushed back by the Sword Demon only because their affinities were terrible. In terms of sheer mana reserves, Ayla—who had steadily collected Starlight—was far superior.

She swore she’d repay this humiliation twofold, interest included.

The world inverted.
All noise vanished as a dreamlike violet hue swallowed the space.
Multicolored butterflies began drifting around Ayla, a sweet scent flooding the air.
The glittering department store scenery disappeared, replaced by ancient, ruin-like structures. Unkempt weeds grew up to ankle height, and the heavy heat and humidity of a rain-soaked midsummer pressed down on the body.

Otherworld Barrier, Second Form — World Alteration.
Its name:
Labyrinth of Illusions.
In this world, Ayla became a creator capable of achieving anything.

Seeing Eve staring back at her with a stiff expression, Ayla felt her lingering anxiety melt away.
The terror of the Sword Demon lay in her monstrous speed and overwhelming power. Cheap illusions and hallucinations were useless—Eve would pierce them instantly, her animal instincts making sneak attacks meaningless. To illusionists like Ayla, she was a natural predator.

But even the Sword Demon wasn’t unbeatable.
All Ayla had to do was create an illusion so real that even Eve couldn’t unravel it.
Because that condition was so hard to fulfill, Ayla had all but given up on Labyrinth of Illusions. But thanks to one overly kind idiot, she’d been able to manifest it in full.
As thanks, I’ll give you hell.
She pictured the man standing outside the barrier, clueless.
She’d throw Eve’s broken corpse at his feet and make him regret, from the bottom of his heart, what he’d done.

“Stay calm. I’ll support you from behind.”
“.”
A voice snapped Ayla out of her intoxicated sense of omnipotence.
Inside the Otherworld Barrier—where non–magical girls shouldn’t even be able to perceive existence—
The man was standing there, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
For the first time, Ayla wondered if his survival from their earlier attack hadn’t been mere coincidence.

Just as I thought.

As I watched the surroundings shift violently, I felt certain.
For reasons I didn’t fully understand, I wasn’t affected by Ayla’s [Distortion] trait.
More precisely, I could see the illusion—but instantly recognized it as fake.
Even now, within the dark, damp ruins, the interior of the department store was faintly visible. It felt like looking into water through a clear lake’s surface.
Е ṅ ú m̊ ӓ
I’d first noticed this when Ayla infiltrated the store using perception distortion to avoid Eve. Somehow, a normal guy with slightly sharp intuition—me—had been able to see straight through her illusion.
The fact that a non–magical girl like me could calmly enter an Otherworld Barrier at all was abnormal.
But thanks to that, a possibility had opened up.
A way to resolve this entire situation without a single casualty.

I focused on Eve.
Unfortunately, she had her back to me, so I couldn’t see her expression. Still, her straighter posture told me she was tense.
Ёn̊ u m á
Entering another magical girl’s domain was inherently dangerous. Honestly, I couldn’t understand why Eve had accepted a stranger’s proposal so easily.
All the persuasion I’d prepared had ended up completely useless.
Maybe protecting her brother first had softened her guard more than I’d expected.
…Or maybe she was always like this.
I didn’t truly know Eve.
The Eve I knew was the one from the original story—the girl who’d lost her family, cut herself off from all human connection, and lived only to slaughter enemies and monsters, her body never free of bloodstains.

Even someone like me, who prided himself on knowing most magical girls, couldn’t grasp Eve’s true nature.
Whatever her reasoning, it worked in my favor.
The biggest variable was gone.
I tore my gaze away from the stunned Ayla and tracked a single point.
Among the countless butterflies filling the air, one stood out—a black butterfly.
While the others fluttered chaotically, that one remained fixed in place.
Ѐ n̄ ǔm̈ а̄
Any barrier on the level of world alteration always had a “core.”
In the original story, the core of the Labyrinth of Illusions was that black butterfly.

If my knowledge was correct, capturing it would not only shatter the barrier but deal massive damage to the caster.
The problem was that Ayla knew this too.
She wouldn’t just let me—or Eve—touch it. Hiding the core among thousands, maybe tens of thousands of butterflies made her intentions obvious.
Should I wait until her focus slipped?
Е n̂.ũmа̀
But even if I jumped with everything I had, I could barely manage a meter.
In ruins as tall as a department store, grabbing a butterfly flying through the air was impossible.
…If only those two had made it.
I’d called two magical girls about thirty minutes ago.

With their ability to fly, they should’ve arrived by now.
At worst, Ga-yeon might’ve thought my call was a prank—but serious as she was, that felt unlikely. Ha-ran, maybe, but not Ga-yeon.
Е̃ n̆ û.mȧ.і̌ d
Something had definitely gone wrong.
Considering the explosion outside the store, the most likely culprit was Belicia—Ayla’s partner.
Still, something didn’t sit right. Could someone known as Nova’s weakest really hold off a veteran like Rania for this long?
…Something feels off.
Ayla’s behavior didn’t match what I knew. Charging in head-on, continuing to fight despite knowing she’d lose to Eve in a fair clash.
The outside had also been strangely quiet, considering the scale of the explosion.

No matter how I looked at it, it felt like someone else was involved.
…Focus on what’s in front of me.
I shook my head, clearing the noise from my thoughts.
Ayla, after deploying the Labyrinth of Illusions, was a formidable enemy—even for Eve.
For now, the priority was to end this cleanly.
The causes could wait.

Just as I steeled myself—
Beyond the hazy background outside the barrier, I spotted a blonde girl floating in the air.
