Chapter 46 : Soulbound Weapon
When Rania first invited her to join the organization she belonged to, Unibel had imagined something much brighter.
A secret underground base no one knew about. Advanced machines and facilities everywhere. People sitting together, heads pressed close, seriously discussing how to defeat monsters efficiently and protect civilians—like the righteous organizations you see in anime or movies.
That was what she’d expected.
Reality was nothing like that.
The underground city, lit by special lights embedded in the ceiling, was dark, gloomy, and lonely.

That feeling didn’t fade even after meeting Aislin—the kind, pretty older sister—and being guided inside.
If anything, it grew stronger when Unibel realized that Aislin lived down here because she wasn’t suited for combat.

…It’s because of them, isn’t it?
Magical girls who attacked other magical girls.
Ha-ran had told her their name later.
Nova.

It felt wrong. Completely wrong.
She wanted to stop them somehow.
But there was only so much one person could do.
“…You want to join Stellis?”

“Yes! I’ll work hard!”
Unibel dropped to her knees in front of Aislin, clasped her hands together, and bowed deeply.

It was, plainly put, a full-on kowtow.
That was how desperate she was. She wanted to find a way to become stronger—strong enough to help her teacher, her friends, and everyone else.
Perhaps sensing that sincerity, Aislin’s expression softened.
“Yes. I’d be happy to.”
“…Huh?”
The answer came so easily that Unibel snapped her head up without realizing it.

“You’ve already passed the test just by making it here to Stellis. And I don’t see any disqualifying issues, so there’s no reason to refuse.”
“…A test?”
“Didn’t Rania tell you? She may look like that, but she’s very suspicious by nature. She doesn’t even like talking to people she doesn’t trust.”
“Th–That’s not really true!”
Hearing Rania’s flustered protest, Unibel remembered the past.
The first time they met at school—when Rania appeared and casually declared she’d kill Teacher to keep the secret.

Unibel had fought desperately to stop her.
—You could call it a test, I guess. Like I said earlier, this world isn’t kind enough to let people in with half-baked resolve. We can’t have just anyone muddying the waters.

So that was the test.
When Unibel looked at Rania, their eyes met for a moment before Rania quickly looked away.
By now, Unibel understood her well enough to recognize it as an awkward apology, in Rania’s own way.
She didn’t feel deceived. If anything, she felt grateful.

Back then, Unibel had known nothing about being a magical girl.
She hadn’t known that some magical girls lived painful lives—or that, behind the scenes, magical girls fought each other in battles where their lives were truly on the line.
If something like the department store incident had happened while she was still ignorant, she would’ve broken.
Even now, when she closed her eyes, she could see it clearly.

The moment she’d lost all hope under Teresi’s overwhelming strength—and Rania, standing alone, insisting there was still a way.
“Thank you.”

“…Why are you saying that all of a sudden?”
“Nothing. I just wanted to.”
Unibel smiled softly at Rania’s bewildered face.
“Ah—and thank you too, Teacher.”
“That feels a little weird. Like I’m being bowed to without earning it.”
“N–No, it’s not like that! I’m really, really grateful to you! I could go on forever—”

“I get it, so calm down.”
Her teacher, Woo-jin, jokingly waved his hands as if to settle her down.
Noticing the attention around her had turned their way, Unibel’s face turned bright red.
“I have one favor to ask, Sis.”
“I know,” Aislin said gently. “You want to use the training hall, right?”
Smiling with her hand lightly covering her mouth, Aislin nodded at Rania’s words.

“Training hall?”
“You said you wanted to get stronger, didn’t you? Why do you think we brought you here?”

“I thought you were just introducing me to people…”
“I’ll say this now—where we’re going might be dangerous, so stay sharp.”
The firmness in Rania’s eyes—something Unibel hadn’t seen in a while—made her straighten instinctively.

The training hall was on the third floor, above the second floor where Aislin lived.
The spire was shaped like a pyramid, widest at the bottom and narrowing toward the top, so Unibel had worried it’d feel cramped. But it was far larger than expected.
About the size of two soccer fields.
When she asked how that was even possible, the answer she got was a vague, unhelpful “magic.”

“Hello!”
At the center of the training hall, paved in clean marble, Unibel spotted a familiar face.

A jet-black longsword held in one hand. A red cloak fluttering behind her. Eyes calm and still, like a lake.
Eve.
It was their first time meeting again since the department store incident.
“Yeah. Hi.”
Eve sheathed her sword and turned around.
Feeling disappointed by Eve’s obvious lack of enthusiasm, Unibel soon realized Eve wasn’t looking at her at all—her gaze was fixed somewhere else.

“Eve. You’re here already.”
“I felt like moving around for once.”
“How many times have I told you to use the front entrance? Honestly.”
“This way’s easier.”
“I’m pretty sure I locked that window last time…”
Muttering under her breath, Aislin walked over to a window at the edge of the hall. She shut it firmly and secured the lock.

“So,” Eve said. “What brings all of you here?”
“We’ve got a new recruit.”

“P–Please take care of me!”
Unibel bowed sharply.
The angle was so perfect it could’ve been used as a demonstration model during election season.
“You don’t need to be that tense. I’m not going to eat you.”

“Y–Yes!”
“…Do whatever you want.”
Eve sighed softly, abandoning whatever she’d been about to say next.
Did I lose points by being too submissive?

Cold sweat beaded on Unibel’s forehead.
She still felt awkward around Eve.

Eve rarely showed emotion, didn’t talk much, and was hard to read.
“Sis! Can’t you show us some training? It’s been a while!”
That suggestion came from Rania.
Her face as she looked at Eve was bright with excitement—like a kid waiting to open a present. It felt surprisingly refreshing.
“Not right now.”
“Come on, just once! It could be a chance to show off a different side of you—something we don’t usually get to see.”

“…Show off to who, exactly?”
“Well? Who do you think?”
Aislin’s gaze briefly flicked toward Woo-jin before returning.
Eve frowned slightly, then let out a quiet breath.
Unibel couldn’t tell what passed between them, but it was clear some silent exchange had happened. Is this about Teacher too?
“Just this once.”

“Show the newbie how cool you are.”
“Fine. Step back. It’s dangerous.”

With that, Eve’s hand moved to the sword at her waist.
Her thumb and forefinger gripped the end of the hilt, the remaining fingers bracing it firmly.
Even from a distance, an overwhelming pressure bore down on Unibel, as if Eve were right in front of her.
It was different from the magical pressure she’d felt from Teresi.

“Eve’s a little different from other magical girls,” Aislin said quietly. “Do you know how?”
“…The sword?”
“That’s right. She doesn’t have much talent for magic itself, so instead of focusing on spells, she devoted herself to physical training. In the end, even her Soulbound Weapon took the form of a sword.”
A Soulbound Weapon, Aislin explained, was when a magical girl’s staff evolved on its own to match her combat style.

…Soulbound Weapon.
Unibel summoned her staff into the air.
Ė n û m ӓ
A pale pink wand, plain and undecorated.
It was nothing like Rania’s sharp spear—or Eve’s refined blade.
Proof that Unibel hadn’t even taken her first proper step as a magical girl yet.
She’d thought she’d learned so much.
In truth, she was still just a frog at the bottom of a well.
While Unibel sank into gloom, Eve began to move.

Shk.
With a light flick of her fingers, the smooth blade revealed itself.
The dark sword matched perfectly with Eve’s black-and-crimson outfit, drawing the eye in.
To Unibel, Eve looked like a swordswoman straight out of myth.
A small twist of Eve’s wrist sent the blade tracing a silver arc through the air. Her breathing remained deep and calm, her posture perfectly steady.
She tapped the floor lightly with her toes.

Fabric rustled. The sound of air being cut rang out.
The speed wasn’t fast.

If anything, it was painfully slow to watch.
And yet, the force behind it felt like it could cut through anything.
As Unibel watched in a daze, her gaze drifted.
Everyone—her teacher, Rania—was focused entirely on Eve.

The stillness, like a quiet forest lake, finally rippled.
“Hah.”
With a soft kiai, Eve kicked off the ground.
Once she caught the flow, her blade tore through the air in every direction—yet no matter how intense her movements became, her balance never wavered.

In that space where only Eve seemed to breathe, she danced alone.
Beautiful.
En üm̈а̌
That was the only word Unibel could think of.
When the sword dance ended and the blade returned to its sheath, Unibel finally let out the breath she’d been holding.
She’d been so absorbed, she’d forgotten to breathe.
Clap. Clap. Clap.
Applause broke out.
Aislin was smiling gently as she clapped, with an excited Rania quickly joining in.

Now Unibel understood.
Why Rania had wanted so badly to see Eve’s sword again.
She felt the same regret—that it was already over.
“…That was amazing.”
“It wasn’t that special.”
“No, it really was!”

That was all Unibel’s vocabulary could manage right now.
Looking embarrassed, Eve scratched her cheek.

“You’ll be able to do it someday too.”
“…Really?”
“Of course. I mean—well. You’re the one he chose.”
As she said that, Eve’s gaze shifted to Woo-jin.
E n̄um ӓ
There was definitely something between Eve and her teacher.
It wasn’t just a shallow relationship like “teacher and student.”
Unibel could tell just by the way Eve looked at him.
Someday, just weak words won’t be enough.

Rania and her teacher had both told her.
That it was okay to take things slowly. Not to rush.
Е ñǔ mа́
She knew that kindness was genuine.
And she hated it.
She didn’t want to be someone who was merely protected.
She wanted to be someone others could rely on. Someone they could trust.
“Please teach me about Soulbound Weapons.”
Unibel said it to Eve, her eyes firm with resolve.
