Chapter 6 : Night of the School
Surprisingly, you don’t actually spend that much one-on-one time with your homeroom teacher.
Unless you’re a first-year middle schooler still awkward in a uniform, or a third-year student constantly being pulled in for counseling before high school entrance exams, someone like Ga-yeon—a middling second-year—doesn’t feel much difference between a homeroom teacher and any other subject teacher.
That was why, even a month into the new school year, Ga-yeon hadn’t thought much about the man named Woo-jin. When she first met her homeroom teacher at the start of the semester, he’d seemed like a pretty ordinary teacher—quiet, and not particularly fun in class.
“So that’s why you were trying so desperately to run away?”
“I-I wasn’t trying to run away! Really!”

Which was why this current reality—sitting across a table from her homeroom teacher after school—was more than enough to turn Ga-yeon’s mind completely blank.
Seeing her flustered, waving her hands in denial, Woo-jin burst out laughing.

“I’m joking. You don’t need to be that tense. Relax. I’m not here to scold you.”
They were in a café a short walk away from the school.
It was a place Woo-jin had visited before and recommended, and at this early evening hour it was packed with people taking a short break from their day.
Ga-yeon actually felt relieved by that.

If it were a quiet café with hardly anyone around—the kind of place perfect for an intimate conversation—she’d probably be so conscious of him that she wouldn’t be able to talk properly at all.
Is this… his way of being considerate?
She took a sip through the straw stuck into her strawberry smoothie.
After refusing several times, she’d been half-forced into ordering it—and annoyingly enough, it was delicious.

“Like I said earlier, there won’t be any remedial classes for a while. I need to adjust the schedule first.”
“…I see.”

“Normally, we’d borrow an empty classroom after school and run it for about two weeks. But this time it’s a bit special. The school administration’s having a headache over it too.”
“…How so?”
At her question, Woo-jin silently met her gaze.
A bad feeling crept up on her, and Ga-yeon swallowed without realizing it.
“Well, what do you think? You’re the only one who failed the midterms. And not just one subject—all of them.”
“…I’m sorry.”

“It’s nothing to apologize for. Teaching students who struggle is part of a teacher’s job. That said… thirteen points in math was a little extreme. Usually, even random guessing gets you to twenty, doesn’t it?”
Ga-yeon felt wronged.
She wasn’t normally that bad at studying.
This time, it was just that something unavoidable had come up.
Yeah. It was out of my control.
The timing of becoming a magical girl had been terrible.

Exactly two weeks before midterms—right when exam prep should’ve started.
Her first fight with a monster. Endless training, day and night, to learn how to use magic.

And monsters didn’t exactly wait for convenient times. She’d had to leave school early more than once, and after that, there was no way she could focus on studying.
But there was no way she could tell any of that to Woo-jin, who was just an ordinary human.
All Ga-yeon could do was lower her head like a guilty criminal.
“Well, I think that covers it. Any other questions? I can’t exactly tell you what’ll be on the finals, no matter how much you ask.”
Е̃n ũmа́
“I wouldn’t ask that. Really.”
“Good. Study hard, and I’ll let you know once the remedial class schedule is finalized.”
Woo-jin stood up from his seat.
“Are you leaving?”

“I still have work to do at school. Thanks for picking up my phone.”
He lightly shook the phone he’d gotten back from Ga-yeon, then headed toward the counter to pay.

I can’t let him leave like this.
She hadn’t even brought up her real reason yet.
Why had there been searches about magical girls on his phone? How did he know the name of the magical girl she transformed into? Had he been involved in some incident related to magical girls?
She had so many things she wanted to ask.
“Um, th-that is…”
But despite her urgent thoughts, the words that came out were a complete mess.

Because it was magical girls.
The kind of thing people started calling childish by late elementary school.
And she was supposed to bring it up first—as a middle schooler.
For Ga-yeon, who was already shy enough to get teased by her friends, that was almost impossible.
“Have you… noticed anything strange happening around you lately?”
“…Strange?”

“L-Like seeing a huge wolf, or the sky suddenly turning red…”
At her words, Woo-jin’s eyes focused on her face.

It was hard to tell what he was thinking just from his expression.
“Now that you mention it…”
“Yes?”
“I guess it is a problem these days.”

“…A problem?”
“Second-year syndrome.”
“You’re at an age where you’re especially susceptible to that stuff. Try not to take it too far. Unless you want to kick your blankets in embarrassment later.”
With a smile, Woo-jin waved and walked away.

“Th-That’s not what I meant!”
A few seconds later, Ga-yeon finally unfroze and shouted after him—but her voice was quickly swallowed up by the noise around them.

—You finally had a chance to make contact with Unibel. Are you really okay with letting it end like this?
In the alley outside the café, Moongmoong was there as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
“I told you. I don’t accept suspicious deals.”
What were the odds that Ga-yeon—the protagonist—would just happen to pick up the phone I dropped in the park?
And that she’d revisit that same park minutes after I’d left?

The moment I saw Ga-yeon standing at the school gate, holding my phone, I realized it.
This was a scripted development.
And the one who’d dropped my phone was probably Moongmoong.
I pulled out the phone Ga-yeon had returned.
When I pressed the power button, the home screen appeared immediately—no lock screen.
…Even the pattern was disabled.
Еn̂ ü m̌â
No wonder the protagonist’s situation felt off.
Seeing Moongmoong perched elegantly atop a trash can, tilting its head cutely, only made it more irritating.

The more I looked at it, the more annoying it got.
I deleted the search history and changed the lock from a pattern to a password. From now on, it’d be better to avoid using my phone as much as possible. Who knew what kind of prank it might pull next.
As I slipped the phone into my pocket and started walking, Moongmoong fluttered onto my shoulder.
Its tail swayed lazily in my peripheral vision, doubling my irritation.

—Still, I didn’t get it. Your goal is to enter the world of magical girls, isn’t it? This was the perfect opportunity. But you rejected it yourself. Why? I don’t understand why you’d take the long way around when there was such an easy path.
“I told you. I don’t accept suspicious deals.”
—No. From what I can see, you know something others don’t. And I’m far more curious about that than anything else. Whatever you’re seeing—that’s definitely related to why you turned this down.
Moongmoong wasn’t wrong.

There was a clear reason I’d rejected what looked like a perfect opportunity.
In Magical Girl Happy Life, aside from monsters from other worlds, there were other enemy factions.
Ĕ n̊.ú m а.іd̄
The one the protagonist clashed with most was a magical girl villain group known as NOVA.
Their main activity was hunting magical girls who collected Starlight, then stealing the Starlight they’d gathered. NOVA would do anything to achieve their long-held goal, and hunting magical girls was only part of it.
The crimes they committed in the story included assault, robbery, and kidnapping—too many to count.
They didn’t even hesitate to commit murder if necessary.
NOVA was, without question, a major threat.
And I didn’t have the power to stand against them.

Until I was fully prepared, I couldn’t afford to make contact with Unibel instead of Ga-yeon. The moment my identity was exposed, I had no idea what kind of danger might come my way.
If I was going to make contact, it had to be somewhere completely isolated—like inside an Otherworld Barrier, where no one could observe us. If the space itself were warped so that no other magical girls could enter, even better.
And that time was coming soon.
Ignoring Moongmoong’s nonstop chatter, I looked up at the sky.
The sunlight was gone, and a bluish half-moon hung in the dark night sky.
If my memory was right, the first episode of Magical Girl Happy Life—Night of School—began on a night with a full moon.

I’d done everything I could.

“This feels like something straight out of a horror movie.”
The school gate was tightly shut.

Looking at the school beyond it, that was the thought that crossed my mind.
In a way, it was a horror movie scene.
Sneaking into an empty school at night by jumping the wall.
If I ended up getting chased all night by cursed ghosts, that’d be a full movie right there.

…Which is basically what’s about to happen anyway.
I crossed the field and reached the back entrance.

Using an emergency key I’d discreetly pocketed before leaving work, I unlocked the door and stepped inside.
The interior of the school looked normal.
Only on the surface.
The atmosphere was completely different.
Even though it was just that the hallway lights were off, the feeling was unsettling—like something could jump out at any moment.
I found myself glancing around with every step.

“How did she walk around a place like this so calmly?”
According to the story, Yoo Eun-hye—the victim of this episode—had stayed late at school alone many times since joining as a new teacher.
When I’d read it as a comic, I’d brushed it off.
Actually being here was a different story.
Clicking my tongue in admiration at her nerves of steel, I carefully made my way toward my target—the staff room.
“Looks like it’s already started.”

Why was this episode titled Night of School?
Because it was a parody of a Western horror movie that had once been popular.
As if they’d heard my muttering, their attention turned toward me… or so I thought.
I say thought because they didn’t have faces.
