Chapter 8 : The Night of the Full Moon
“Don’t just stand there. Come in.”
At Lee Woo-jin’s steady voice, Unibel’s frozen brain finally kicked back into gear.
“First, I have to ask—this isn’t cosplay, right?”
She edged into the faculty room, and he gave her a quick once-over from head to toe.
It was the first time anyone had ever seen her transformed. And worse—someone she actually knew.

I don’t look ridiculous… right?
Flustered, she tugged her skirt down even though it was useless; the hem was short to begin with.

“I—I really am a magical girl.”
“Yeah, I figured. You don’t exactly look like the type to play dress-up in the school building at midnight.”
He leaned back against a desk and pressed his fingers to his temple like he had a headache.
Unibel caught herself staring.
Ӗñŭ mӓ
He’s not scared?
An empty school at night. Unknown shadow-things crawling in from every direction. Any ordinary person would be panicking.
But the quick glance she stole at his face showed no fear, no wide eyes—just a calm that felt practiced, like he’d dealt with this kind of thing before.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”

“No reason. You’re just calmer than I expected.”
“Well, I’ve always had a knack for getting dragged into trouble. Comes up a lot.”

She remembered the search history she’d seen on his phone a week ago: urban legends, strange phenomena… and magical girls.
So she hadn’t imagined it. He’d been brushing up against this weird world long before she became a magical girl.
Then another memory surfaced—what he’d muttered the very first time he saw her.
‘So you really are a magical girl. Guess I didn’t imagine it that time.’
“Were you there when I was fighting that giant wolf in the park?”
“Yeah. It looked dicey. Even watching had my heart in my throat.”

That solved it—why he knew about magical girls, why he knew her magical girl name. He’d noticed her long before they met like this.
But… wait.
Moongmoong had told her that normal people couldn’t even perceive the Otherworld Barrier, and that Moongmoong shouldn’t show up to anyone else’s eyes.
At the back of the faculty room, a massive window framed the bright gold full moon, and beyond it sprawled a sky dyed red—the signature of the Otherworld Barrier. And Woo-jin had been moving around inside it like it was nothing.
Moongmoong?
She suddenly remembered her partner. They’d been together right up until she blasted her way into the room, but now… nowhere.

“Looking for something?”
“No, it’s just—”

She cut herself off. Moongmoong could wait. She had a job.
“This room isn’t safe. I’m going to get you outside. Please take shelter.”
So he could move inside the Otherworld Barrier. Fine. But at the end of the day, he was still just a regular human. She was the magical girl. It was on her to evacuate him.
Thankfully, unlike the other classrooms and hallways, the faculty room windows hadn’t been swallowed by the shadows yet. She could fly him out.

“If I go, what about you?”
“I’ll stay and take down whatever’s causing this.”
“Then I’m staying too.”
“…What?”

She had just unlatched the window when his answer made her whip around.
“I can tell just looking at you. You barely made it here. I’m guessing this is your first time seeing those things, too.”

He pointed past her. Beyond the open doorway, shadows piled over one another in every direction, writhing. The malice in the way they waited for a single opening made Unibel retreat a step.
He wasn’t wrong.
Her magic—her strong suit—was basically sealed. The shadows hated light and swarmed it. Their numbers kept climbing. The best she could do was hole up here and wait for the other magical girl to arrive.
She knew it. Right now, she wasn’t any better off than him.
And this “safe zone” was only a guess. There was no telling how long the shadows would hold back. Maybe they’d rush in all at once in a matter of minutes.
She pictured herself buried in tar-black sludge, thrashing for air. Trussed up head to toe in shadow, sinking somewhere she could never climb out of.

Goosebumps prickled down her arms. Her legs trembled.
Even so—
“I’m a magical girl.”
“…”
“I have a duty to protect people from monsters that threaten their lives. Being scared doesn’t change that. I can’t run.”
“Then I’ll say the same thing back. Protecting students is a teacher’s duty. You want me to leave a kid and go hide somewhere safe by myself? Can’t do something that shameful as a teacher.”

Their eyes met in midair and held. Neither of them blinked. Neither of them backed down.
“And besides—”

“Yes?”
“I never said we’d run together.”
“…Huh?”
“Told you. Stuff like this happens to me a lot.”

He slipped an arm around her waist and yanked her in.
“H-hey, what are you—”
“Shh.”
Something dropped from the ceiling with a wet thud. It was much larger than the blobs crawling in the hall.

“Grrrk…?”
The giant slime-like lump twisted, then reshaped. No eyes, no nose, no mouth—but it was unmistakably human-shaped.

…That’s our school uniform.
It was all shadow, so she couldn’t be sure, but the cut of the jacket and skirt matched the uniform she’d worn to class earlier that day.
While Unibel stared, the human-shaped shadow searched the room like it was looking for something. Then, as if it lost interest, it drifted back out into the hallway where the others clustered.
“What is that thing?”
“No idea exactly. Only that, unlike the others that act on instinct, that one’s got a will of its own. Keep your voice down.”
Pressed against his chest, Unibel whispered up at him, eyes wide.

“You knew creatures like that existed?”
“It was here when I first came to the faculty room. Come on, we should move. This place isn’t a safe zone anymore.”
He let her go and started walking. Unlike Unibel—still half-panicked from what she’d just seen—he never lost that steady, unhurried pace. That, more than anything, amazed her.
Thinking back, it sounded like he hadn’t started in the faculty room at all. Which meant he’d been chased by the shadows and reached the same conclusion she had: find the brightest place.
“Here. Wear this for now. You stand out too much like that.”
He crossed to a cabinet, rummaged, and tossed her something.

A big black hoodie.
“What’s this?”

“Spare clothes. For when someone gets dirty at school. It’s clean—just got washed and hasn’t been used yet. Probably smells fine.”
It did—fresh and soft, like fabric softener.
“What did you mean about this place not being safe?”
She pulled the hoodie over her costume and looked up at him. She’d never planned to stay here forever, but his voice had the ring of certainty that her guesses didn’t.

Even if he’d dealt with similar things in the past, could anyone predict this much?
Her doubt vanished with his next words.
“Clouds are starting to cover the moon. See? The shadows are longer than when we got here.”
Sure enough, the cluster outside the door had crept past the threshold. Less moonlight was spilling into the room. Proof.

“And the moon won’t stay in one spot forever. Right now it’s dead ahead, so they keep their distance. Once it moves east, that changes. Then we’ll be stuck pushing through those things with no light at all.”
“But… to where?”

The faculty room was the only “safe” place she’d managed to think of. Hard to imagine anywhere indoors safer than this—aside from leaving the school entirely.
He answered by pointing up.
Up?
Up meant the upper grades’ classrooms, the music room, the science labs. None of those had windows as big as this place.
“No, higher.”
He shook his head with a faint smile, like he’d read her mind.

Higher than another floor… Wait.
“The roof?”
“Bingo. If I’m right, that’s where the source of all this is.”
