Mo Wendao was not accustomed to the sensation of riding in a hovercar.

With a roar from the engine, the seat shook violently, and the entire market grew smaller and smaller in his vision until even the handcart he had locked at the market entrance disappeared from sight.

Within the demonic path’s food chain, the status of the Enforcers was worlds apart from nouveau riche gangs like the Skeleton Gang. They stood at the very top of the Lower City’s demonic food chain. Even the gang bosses of the various neighborhoods had to act according to their whims, and a considerable portion of the profits squeezed from gang territories ultimately flowed into the Enforcers’ pockets.

Mo Wendao felt that if one judged purely by attainment in the demonic path, these Enforcers were probably far beyond an unaffiliated cultivator like himself.

Compared to the overbearing Skeleton Gang, the Enforcers escorting Siwan were remarkably courteous. After they boarded the vehicle, they even gave each of them a bottle of water.

Such was the bearing of a great sect of the demonic path.

While secretly admiring them, Mo Wendao also pondered why the Enforcers had summoned him.

Had they discovered his Dao discussion with the Skeleton Gang? Unlikely. He was highly proficient in such matters and had left behind no traces.

Then had he simply been implicated while they investigated Siwan?

He vaguely remembered the Skeleton Gang boss ordering Siwan to steal some drugs... At this thought, Mo Wendao began to see the outline of the situation, and his previously tense mood eased slightly.

Even so, he could not lower his guard. He had to remain vigilant at all times. If events failed to develop as he wished, then he would have no choice but to discuss the Dao of life and death with his fellow Daoists of the Enforcement Sect.

At the same time, Mo Wendao had already planned his subsequent escape route. As long as he could break through the southern border, he would have a chance of survival.

In his view, the only weakness of the Enforcement Sect disciples was that they cherished their lives too much. They would never act before ensuring absolute certainty, and historically, they only fought battles where they could crush their opponents. Their decision-making in unexpected situations was often lacking, which could give him an opportunity at a critical moment.

Long ago, Mo Wendao had already imagined the possibility of slaughtering fellow disciples from the Enforcement Sect.

If even his own master could stab him in the back, how could he possibly leave himself unguarded against the Enforcement Sect?

The hovercar came to a stop atop the Enforcer department’s headquarters. This seventy-two-story skyscraper occupied the most conspicuous location in the Lower City. Apart from the imposing holographic sign reading “Lower City Legal Affairs Bureau,” there were also slightly smaller logos for Nirvana Technologies and Three Lives Pharmaceuticals beside it.

“Old Mo!”

The moment he stepped out, a booming voice came from nearby. The speaker was a ruddy-faced middle-aged man. He looked utterly ordinary at first glance, but upon closer inspection, several seam lines could be seen extending from his wrists and disappearing beneath his sleeves.

The man walked toward him holding a steaming cup of instant coffee, looking warm and friendly. “You finally made it. I’ve been waiting for you for ages.”

Mo Wendao lowered his head and respectfully said, “Inspector Morse.”

He made no attempt whatsoever to act familiar with Morse. They were not close to begin with. Their only previous encounter had been when Morse brought Enforcers into the neighborhood to arrest someone. While his subordinates conducted a thorough search, Morse had stopped by Mo Wendao’s stall and bought five fried meatball skewers.

At the time, Mo Wendao had refused to take his money. Morse had happily accepted, but had not even given him a proper look.

That sort of relationship was nowhere near enough for Morse to call him “Old Mo.”

Upon seeing Siwan cowering beside Mo Wendao, Morse suddenly put on a stern expression and berated the Enforcers responsible for escorting them. “What exactly are you people doing? Mr. Siwan is a victim. Do you even know how to do your jobs?”

Immediately afterward, Morse softened his attitude toward Siwan. “Don’t be afraid, young man. It’s just routine procedure. Give us a brief statement and you can go home.” After saying that, he even handed Siwan his instant coffee and gave him a donut. Only then did Siwan’s expression ease somewhat.

Morse’s appearance and this combination of intimidation and kindness made Mo Wendao even more certain of his earlier speculation. The military-grade cybernetic implant that the Skeleton Gang had suddenly obtained, along with the drugs they had commissioned Siwan to steal, most likely meant someone had been using them as pawns.

Otherwise, given Morse’s position within the Legal Affairs Bureau, there was no possible reason for him to personally concern himself with the lives and deaths of a handful of street thugs.

At that moment, Morse took the initiative to invite him along. “Come on, let’s talk in my office. Don’t be nervous. It’s a good thing.”

Mo Wendao immediately followed. Morse clasped his hands behind his back and leisurely walked ahead of him. Once they entered the office, he smiled and said, “Sit wherever you like. Here, this is for you. I go to this place pretty often. Their food is quite good.”

He handed over a food bag containing several different kinds of pastries. Then Morse suddenly changed the subject. “I heard the Skeleton Gang caused trouble at the market yesterday and severely affected your businesses. Don’t worry. As long as we’re here, we absolutely will not tolerate gang members running rampant in the streets!”

“We captured the Skeleton Gang’s leader alive, but as you know, there are plenty of procedures involved in these matters. So I’ll get straight to the point. I hope you can cooperate with the Legal Affairs Bureau and testify in court when the case goes to trial.”

As he finished speaking, Morse stared fixedly at Mo Wendao, as though trying to see straight through his thoughts.

Mo Wendao immediately understood that Morse was testing him.

Before leaving, he had repeatedly confirmed that his fellow Daoist from the Skeleton Gang was thoroughly dead, with absolutely no possibility of the corpse getting back up.

And if the man were to return as a soul cultivator, naturally there would be no question of him appearing in court either.

Mo Wendao immediately put on a conflicted expression and said anxiously, “The Skeleton Gang’s methods are far too brutal. I’m worried...”

“There’s no need to be afraid. As long as you testify in court, the Lower City Legal Affairs Bureau will be your strongest backing. We will also take certain measures to protect your identity.”

“I...”

Mo Wendao lowered his head as though caught in an intense internal struggle.

“There’s no rush. There’s still some time before the trial. You can think it over slowly.”

Only after another ten seconds or so did Morse finally look away from Mo Wendao. A friendly smile returned to his face. “Actually, the main reason I asked you here today is something else. I was chatting with a colleague recently and happened to hear that you’ve been asking around for connections that might get you a job at Nirvana Technologies or Three Lives Pharmaceuticals?”

“Who wouldn’t want one?”

A bitter smile appeared on Mo Wendao’s face. “But the threshold for even submitting a resume is too high. I’m not even qualified for an interview.”

“What if I told you I could give you an opportunity?”

“You mean that as long as I agree to testify in court, I’ll have a chance to work for a major corporation?”

“No. This has nothing to do with testifying.”

Morse waved his hand. “I looked through your file. It’s hard to find anyone in the Lower City with a background as clean as yours. No parents, no siblings, and more importantly, you’re not involved with any gangs and have no history of injecting prohibited drugs. There aren’t many young men your age willing to earn an honest living through business. It reminds me of when I applied to the police academy all those years ago...”

“I also asked some of your fellow vendors about you. You’re well liked. Everyone who knows you had something good to say. You should know how difficult it is these days to get even one compliment out of those scumbags... Oh, you’re not included in that statement.”

Mo Wendao said nothing. He knew perfectly well that all of Morse’s lengthy rambling was merely laying the groundwork for his true objective. If this had been Mo Wendao in his previous life, he might genuinely have regarded the man as a benefactor.

At this point, Morse’s eyes suddenly sharpened.

He asked solemnly, “Kid, can I trust you?”
