Chapter 205 : The Road Back
Chapter 205: The Road Back
“Finally back!”
Gauss and the others stood before Graystone Town’s gate, far less imposing than Barry’s grand walls, yet their voices carried a trace of barely perceptible relief.
After growing accustomed to Barry, the Forest Capital, with its towering walls bristling with watchtowers and fortifications, the crude stone wall before them—only two or three meters tall—suddenly felt strangely warm and nostalgic.
Arya couldn’t help but raise her hand and make a small gesture in the air, measuring its height.
Ė n̈ũ ḿа
Gauss drew in a deep breath. The air carried a familiar blend of earth, cooking smoke, and the faint tang of livestock—the unmistakable scent of Graystone Town.
Since arriving in this world, this had been his first real journey away.

Now, standing once more within the familiar sights and smells of Graystone, his heart brimmed with emotion.
After all, this was the place where his path as an adventurer had begun.
At the gate, a young, unfamiliar guard started forward, ready to scold them into the line. But an older, scruffy-bearded veteran quickly caught the youth’s arm.
The old guard smiled, bowing slightly.

“Arya, Lord Gauss, and this gentleman—welcome home. You must be tired from the road.”
After nodding their thanks, Gauss led his chocobo down the familiar main street.
The town itself had barely changed since their departure.
The street, wide enough for two carts abreast, was lined with simple shops. Women sat on small stools under their eaves, chatting idly as they scrubbed clothes in wooden basins.

Farmers carrying baskets of fresh vegetables haggled with the shopkeepers of the general stores.
The simple, ordinary life of the town wafted toward them.

“Still the same as ever.”
Serandur glanced around, taking in everything. For the town where his two teammates had long resided, he could not help but look closer.
At length, he reached a conclusion.
It was nothing more than the most ordinary of frontier adventurer towns.
While they were observing their surroundings, the townsfolk, too, were curiously observing them.
Especially Serandur.

Many who saw him jumped in fright.
After all, half-serpents were rare sights in this small town.
And such places seldom bred broad horizons.
Gauss noticed.
“Let’s head home first.”
The three turned toward the houses.

Along the way, they saw noticeably fewer professional adventurers.
Most had already been drawn away toward the labyrinth outside Barry.

Still, soon enough, many would surely return.
They slipped into a stone-paved alley.
As Gauss passed a street corner, he cast a glance in a certain direction.
Upon spotting a familiar figure, he finally relaxed.

At the inn, Sophia and her clerk, Winnie, were idly chatting at the counter.
Suddenly, Sophia looked up as though sensing something.
She turned her head toward the doorway, her eyes instantly brightening with joy.
“Gauss! When did you get back?”

“Just now. Haven’t even put down the luggage yet.” Gauss tapped the storage pouch at his waist.
“Oh, right, Sophia.” He patted Serandur’s shoulder. “Let me introduce you. This is my new teammate, Serandur, a priest.”

“Serandur, this is my former caretaker, the inn’s owner, Sophia.”
“Hello.”
“Hello.”
They exchanged brief greetings.
Sophia’s eyes flickered uncertainly when she first looked at Serandur.
At a glance, he hardly resembled a normal human. That aura of chill around him was unsettling.

But when she heard he was Gauss’s new teammate—and that his class was priest—she managed a strained smile.
By now, she was no stranger to adventurers. Many stayed at the inn from time to time.
She knew priests generally meant healing professions.
Hearing that Gauss now had a healer with him, she was sincerely glad.
With a doctor at his side, the risk of injury would surely be far less.
“Have you eaten?”

“Not yet.” Gauss waved his hand. “We’ll rest at home first, then come back to catch up with you.”
After parting with Sophia, Gauss and Arya separated briefly to return to their respective homes.

Naturally, Serandur followed Gauss—his house was large and had two unused guest rooms.
When Gauss opened the door, the furniture was coated with dust.
The very first thing he did was use magic to thoroughly clean the entire place, inside and out.
Serandur thought to offer help, but when he saw how skillfully Gauss wielded his magic, he swallowed the words.

“Captain, which room should I take?”
He glanced curiously around the first floor.
“Either of the guest rooms downstairs. Take whichever you like.”
Gauss was utterly absorbed in the cleaning.

The White Wand greatly enhanced his use of prestidigitation.
Where once the spell’s effect covered only a small area, its reach had now multiplied severalfold.

Its cleansing and stain-removing abilities had also grown stronger.
It wasn’t long before the two-story home gleamed anew.
The furniture almost seemed to shine.
Gauss surveyed his work with satisfaction.
After instructing his four Clay Spiders, “Don’t leave the house. Don’t break anything inside,” he joined Serandur, who had already unpacked, and went to meet with Arya.
As half a host, it was only proper for him to welcome Serandur.

Arya’s cleaning progress was far slower. When Gauss arrived, she was still bustling about, while Ulfen made mischief at her side.
Fortunately, Gauss was there.
Within minutes, he had her place spotless as well.
Arya, clad in a cleaning apron with hood and gloves, clutched her broom and stood aside idly. Watching him, her eyes grew envious as she muttered, “If only I could learn prestidigitation.”
“Even if you did, it wouldn’t work nearly as well as the captain’s.” Serandur mercilessly crushed her fantasy.
The same spell varied drastically depending on the caster.

In his eyes, Gauss was an absolute genius. Whether cantrips or spells, he wielded them all with flawless mastery—every casting superior to the norm.
Such talent was extraordinarily rare. In all his travels, Serandur had never encountered another who could even compare.

And Arya? Perhaps she had potential in certain specializations. But compared to Gauss’s universal brilliance, the gap was enormous.

She knew the half-serpent spoke truth. But why did it sound so irritating coming from him?

The next day.

Gauss stretched and sat up in bed.
Last night, their first night back in Graystone, he had booked a private room at Firefly Kitchen, inviting friends to dinner.
W̆ е̂b̊ nо v̊ӗ l̇ Е̊ n̄ ŭmа̇
Sadly, few had come.
Andini was off “messing about” somewhere again, absent from Thorn Cottage.
Groln of the Black Anvil Workshop politely declined after thanking him.
The Night Owl Team seemed to be away on commission.
In the end, only Sophia the innkeeper, Winnie, Petra the Adventurer’s Guild receptionist (currently off duty), and the three of Gauss’s own squad came.
Glancing at the window, he saw the sun already high.

He had slept deeply and soundly.
As the saying went: there’s no bed like your own. And though his house wasn’t large, it was perfectly comfortable.
After washing and breakfast, the trio regrouped and set out toward the Adventurer’s Guild.
Though this return to Graystone carried a touch of “vacation,” it was not truly rest.
Too many days without fighting monsters—if they didn’t take a commission soon, their skills would dull.
When they arrived, the guild was as crowded as ever.
Ẃе̄bnо v̇ е̄ ĺ Е n̄üm̄ а̊
Those rushing to Barry to explore the labyrinth were mostly professionals. For the many low-level adventurers, it was easier to continue taking jobs in familiar territory.
To uproot oneself to a distant city posed many obstacles—psychological, financial, personal.

As Gauss’s team entered the guild’s first floor, the volume dropped noticeably.
Many turned their eyes on them, whether openly or from the corners of their vision.
It wasn’t just the aura of the trio. More than anything, it was Serandur who drew stares.
Compared to the half-orcs, dwarves, halflings, or even half-elves common in the town, a half-serpent attracted far more attention.
Ӗn̆ů m̆ â
That massive snake’s tail, coiling behind him, was impossible to ignore.
So much so that when they stepped into the guild hall, more than a few adventurers instinctively gripped their weapons.
Were it not for Serandur standing beside Gauss and Arya, they might have thought a monster had invaded the guild itself.
Gauss cast him a glance. Though Serandur’s face showed no change, his body stiffened for an instant. Gauss deliberately teased him.

“Serandur, look at us. Wherever we go, we’re the center of attention.”
Serandur’s tense tail eased slightly. The corner of his mouth twitched into a barely perceptible curve as he rasped in self-mockery, “I’m used to it.”
Е̊n̄ů m̌ á
“What are you saying? Obviously, they’re all looking at me.” Gauss smirked. “Mm… being handsome often brings trouble.”
With his banter, Serandur’s mood lifted somewhat.
The three slowly approached the counter.
Before long, Petra led them toward the VIP room.
Only when Gauss and the others vanished from sight did the hall return to its former bustle.
“That snake-man just now was terrifying.”

“I nearly thought it was a monster, haha.”
“Don’t say that out loud, or you’ll be in trouble.”
“Actually… to be honest, don’t you think having a snake-man as a teammate is pretty cool?”
…
“Gauss, the usual?” Petra produced the Mission Crystal. “But the entry-level goblin tasks aren’t very close by.”
As Gauss’s first receptionist, and the one closest to him, she naturally knew his preferred commissions.

“Mm.” Gauss nodded. “Then I won’t take an entry-level one this time. Let’s start with a normal commission to warm up.”
He didn’t take the crystal.

Petra fell silent for a moment, her gaze lingering on the adventurer badges of Gauss, Arya, and Serandur.
This really was just “warming up”...
Spending a moment’s sympathy on the goblin tribe about to face this squad of professionals, she soon turned and brought back a stack of commissions.
The number of normal goblin requests was considerable, spread across the table in an impressive pile.
Ëṅ u m.а .і̂d́
“Any commissions near Stone Creek Village?” Gauss asked directly, abandoning the thought of searching through the pile himself.
“Stone Creek Village… let me think.”
The sudden mention of a village’s name made the girl in her early twenties pause.
“It sounds familiar.”

She pinched her chin, rifling through the parchments.
Not long after, she pulled one out.

“Here—this one’s for Stone Creek Village.”
No wonder she remembered the name. She had seen this very commission earlier.
Gauss took the parchment. As expected, the task site was his home village: Stone Creek.
【Normal Subjugation Task】
Reward: 20 Silver Coins.
Description: A group of goblins has occupied the shallows and woodlands upstream of Stone Creek. Based on villagers’ sightings, the group is estimated to number over 30. Their activity has spread from the outer forest into nearby villages.

Time Limit: 5 Days.
Gauss finished reading. Strictly speaking, the commission was not issued by Stone Creek alone, but by several nearby villages pooling funds together.
Still…
He understood why it remained unclaimed.
Compared to other tasks, the pay was low while the difficulty was high.
More than 30 goblins—ordinary adventurer teams without real strength wouldn’t dare. Even those confident of success likely wouldn’t bother with such poor returns.

It seemed his hometown truly wasn’t wealthy—or simply too stingy.
Several villages together had only scraped together 20 silver coins.

“Alright, I’ll take it.” Gauss didn’t hesitate.
He was only looking for a warm-up commission anyway. His squad no longer relied on such paltry rewards.
If he refused, who knew when anyone else would accept it?
Soon, Petra completed the registration.

“Then, shall we head out?” Though the parchment didn’t mention urgency, Gauss decided not to delay.
If something happened—and it involved his family—he would regret it deeply.
“Yes. The commission comes first.”
Arya and Serandur voiced no objection, both nodding.

Their steps toward the door were even quicker than Gauss’s.
Swinging into the saddle of their chocobos, the team set out once more.

Stone Creek lay northwest of Graystone, not particularly close—one reason the job remained untouched.
Soon after leaving town, the road narrowed and grew rough. Bushes and weeds spread wild on either side.
The smoke and bustle of town faded, replaced by the raw scent of countryside.
Fortunately, the chocobos were fast. Even Serandur’s serpentine glide allowed swift travel, posing no obstacle.
Sunlight streamed down.
The chocobos’ powerful talons pounded the dirt, kicking up dust.

Serandur glided smoothly over the dry ground, his scales rasping with steady rhythm.
The scenery grew increasingly untamed.
Morning passed into afternoon.
The closer they drew to Stone Creek, the sharper Gauss’s memories became.
Unnameable feelings welled up within him.
The sights grew familiar.

At last, rounding a bare knoll dotted with crooked old trees, the low, shabby outline of Stone Creek Village appeared.
“So this is your hometown?” Arya asked from atop her towering chocobo, glancing down at Gauss.
“Mm.” Gauss’s tone was calm, his eyes fixed on the village. “Let’s go. We’ll take a look inside.”
The village looked much as it had more than a year ago. His home still stood at its corner.

“Captain, I’ll wait outside?” Serandur suddenly offered.
Gauss knew why. Serandur feared his appearance might frighten Gauss’s parents.
The more remote and old-fashioned a place, the stronger the resistance—and fear—toward half-blood races.
“It’s fine. Come with me.” Gauss shook his head.

Since he insisted, Serandur didn’t argue further.
Soon, two chocobos carried Gauss and Arya, while Serandur slid alongside, flanked by a tall gray wolf and the raven, as they entered the dusty village road.

The first to notice were children at play.
“A monster’s here!!”
“Run!!”
“Papa, come quick!!”
They screamed—perhaps in fear, perhaps excitement—and scattered, shouting for the adults.
Soon, several villagers hurried over with farm tools, shooing the children home.

But upon seeing Gauss’s group, fear seized them. Their legs shook as they stared at the newcomers.
Then, one spotted the adventurer badges on their chests and pointed them out. The fear eased slightly.
“They… they’re adventurers!”
“But what about that monster?”
“Could it be a disguise?”
Hearing their whispers, Gauss almost laughed.

Ironically, he recognized them. The village was small; everyone knew everyone.
These men had been the petty bullies of the village. Not true thugs, but prone to using their tempers to pressure neighbors.

In the past, Gauss himself had often been their target. Fortunately, his family’s standing kept it from going beyond words.
Yet now, facing him, they shook like quails.
Gauss shook his head.
From atop his golden-feathered chocobo, he gestured for them to come closer.

Uneasy, they wanted to flee. But somehow, under his overwhelming presence, their bodies shuffled forward despite their will.
Before him, the pressure grew so dense they could hardly breathe.
Just as they thought themselves doomed—believing they faced a monster in adventurer’s guise—the tall figure in black robes spoke.
“Carson, Brian, O’Neill. Is my home still well?”

Hearing their names spoken so precisely, the three jerked in shock, slowly raising their heads.
They stared at the familiar yet unfamiliar face.

Recognition flickered in their eyes, but disbelief chained them.
He resembled someone they knew—someone who had gone away long ago. But that boy could never be this imposing figure.
“I am Gauss.” Seeing their refusal to believe, Gauss revealed himself.
Gauss!!!
The three felt no joy at meeting a fellow villager. Instead, their throats bobbed as they swallowed with difficulty.
Their hearts sank to ash.

The man before them truly was Gauss!
Confirmed, their vision spun.
They remembered clearly how, over the years, they had often given him trouble.
They had thought they might scarcely see him again in this lifetime. Who could have imagined that in just a little more than a year, he would return, transformed into an entirely different person?
Guilt gnawed at them. Overwhelmed by the aura radiating from Gauss and his companions, their legs gave way, and they collapsed onto the ground.
Seeing their panic-stricken state, Gauss felt helpless. He had only wanted to ask after his family’s well-being before returning home, to have some peace of mind.

But he had underestimated the effect he and his group had—especially himself.
Helpless, he resorted to magic.

“Friendship.”
As magical energy surged around him, a strange aura enveloped the three men.
“Tell me how my family is.”
Under the influence of the cantrip and Gauss’s charisma, the villagers froze, trembling ceasing, their faces blank as they recited the news.

Hearing that his family was safe, that his elder brother and sister-in-law had even welcomed a son, Gauss exhaled in relief.
He released the spell.
The three stared vacantly for a moment, then realized what had happened.
A dread unlike any before seized them. Gauss had controlled them?

Their knowledge could not grasp the truth. They only knew it was some power Gauss commanded.

The sensation of being puppets on strings filled them with fear.
“You may go. Live honestly from now on. Stop bullying others.” Gauss sighed.
He had no interest in revenge.
The three hurriedly nodded.
“Yes, yes, we’ll go now.”
With that, they scrambled away on all fours.

As Gauss questioned them, other villagers had begun to notice.
But seeing the three flee in terror, they did nothing, leaning against doors, watching Gauss and his companions warily as they entered the village.
Yet, looking at Gauss’s face, an identical thought stirred within them.
Why did he seem so familiar?
Gauss led his companions to a small courtyard at the village’s edge.
His family had been relatively well-off in Stone Creek.
Wè b̊ ñо̌ vе̊ l Е̂ n̆ û m а
They had farmland, and his father, Horst, possessed a hunter’s skill. With that talent, he had raised two sons and a daughter, both sons possessing physiques stronger than average.
Yes, Gauss now recalled from experience: a score of 5 in attributes meant normal human health.

A year ago, apart from his intelligence at 6, all his attributes had been 5. He had seemed ordinary.
But in this age, in rural poverty where meat was rare, even having a “normal, healthy” body was no small feat.
In recent years, however, old Horst’s age had weighed him down. His legs weakened, and he hunted less. The forests too grew sparse. Their food dwindled.
Neither Gauss’s elder brother nor his former self had inherited Horst’s hunting skill. Hunting, though it seemed simple, required talent.

And two years ago, a drought had ruined the fields.
Perhaps it was in that time that Gauss had gone forth to seek a new path.
Realizing this, Gauss stopped before the gate.
“What’s wrong? Not going in?” Arya asked, blinking at him.

Gauss drew a deep breath, steeled himself, and pushed open the sagging gate.

He stepped into the courtyard.
“Father, Mother, I’m back!”
He had thought those familiar yet foreign words would stick in his throat. But they came as easily as breathing.
In the yard, a young woman and an older one sat on stools, chatting as they wove straw sandals.

Whether it was the former self’s desire to return home only in glory, or his own hesitation and guilt—it was no excuse.

“You’ve suffered, haven’t you?” Rosa’s next words made him feel guiltier still.
Behind her, a young woman, Meilin, stood awkwardly. His sister-in-law had barely known him before he left.
Her impression of Gauss was of a small, thin youth. The man before her, tall and refined, was unrecognizable—save for those clear emerald eyes.
“These two years, I became an adventurer,” Gauss explained briefly, then beckoned toward the door.

There was guilt in him, too.
They exchanged only a few words before silence fell, broken only when Rosa pressed him with questions, easing the awkwardness.

“Gauss, are you hungry? I picked some melons.” Hawk’s voice was quiet and honest, his patched linen clothes clinging to him.
Like their father, he avoided Gauss’s eyes.
That year, reality had struck them hard. Horst broke his leg, crippling his hunts. A drought withered the fields, and the forests emptied.
Though they had savings and stores, two sons ate heartily, and mouths were many.
Someone had to go.
Married, with Meilin carrying a child, Hawk could not leave. Thus, at seventeen, Gauss had taken what food he could and gone to survive.

For an eldest son to inherit, and a second son to make his own way, was common in these times.
Still, Hawk had worried for him these two years, guilt heavy on his heart.
He had wished to inquire after Gauss but had no means. A poor farmer in a remote village had no such connections.
“Alright, let’s cook. I brought food, too.”
While cooking, when the family saw the large cut of beef sirloin and assorted vegetables Gauss produced, their eyes widened. Only then did they grasp, in concrete terms, his current standing.
Before, they had guessed from his attire that he was doing well. But as for the true value of those garments, they hadn’t known.

Holding Cicero, Arya saw the drool glistening at her lips and could not help silently complaining in her heart.
So it was true—Gauss’s gluttonous streak was a family trait.

Just as they were about to resume talking—

“Father, Mother, I have to go out.” Gauss spoke.

“What? You’re leaving now?” Rosa had just finished clearing the table, her face etched with worry.

Goblins were dangerous creatures.
Though she knew her son was an adventurer, that fighting monsters was his work, hearing him speak of facing such beings still made her heart pound.

“Don’t worry. I’ll be back soon. It’s not dangerous. I’ve handled many tasks like this.” Gauss reassured her.
“Brother, can I come too?” Cicero asked excitedly.
At her age, she was fond of play. With goblins nearby, Hawk never let her play freely with the other children, even taking her to the fields with him to keep her safe.
“No!” Gauss’s refusal was stern, his tone absolute, leaving no room for argument.
Even if the chance of mishap was 0.1%, there was no need to bring a child.
Fighting monsters was no game. Even a lion gave its all to strike a hare.

And while goblins posed little threat to him, if Cicero saw how easily he slew them, she might underestimate their danger—something that could prove fatal in the future.
Children’s worldviews were still unformed.
Startled by his severity, Cicero shrank back, feeling wronged.
“Then I won’t go. I’ll wait for you to come back.”
“Be careful.” “Take care.” Rosa and Meilin, still uneasy, voiced their concern.
But Horst’s face showed no worry.

Some had seen him at Horst the hunter’s house and already guessed his identity, though they could hardly believe it.
Others, quick-witted, were already heading there with eggs and vegetables in hand to visit.
Apart from his family, Gauss felt little for the other villagers.
“To think… you were truly born here.” Arya still could not believe it.
When she had first met him, she thought he must be a noble’s son—at worst, an illegitimate one. Only such people could have such resources and talent.
But what she had seen left no doubt. He had been born and raised here, an utterly ordinary peasant boy.
