Chapter 227 : 『Sibling Strife』

Chapter 227:『Sibling Strife』

Though it was called a rest period, there were still plenty of things to do.

For professional adventurers, in a career filled with constant danger, such breaks were the golden opportunity to digest gains, improve oneself, and prepare for the unexpected.

Gauss and Arya both understood this well.

Arya, for instance, needed to learn a new spell—Faerie Fire—continue honing her Beast Form, build rapport with several animal companions, and train her Beast Taming and Nature Knowledge skills. For the next few days, she would be immersed either in the inn’s room, the meditation chamber, or the woods at the town’s edge.

E n ùm̈ а̌.і̀ ď

Gauss had his own plans as well. He needed to practice new spells, continue researching the Spell Upcasting technique for Magic Missile, and head out to take on commissions.

Indeed, Gauss had no intention of staying holed up near Canopy Town for a few days.

Instead, he planned to practice while accepting a few nearby minor commissions.

This way, he could have real targets while casting spells, and at the same time accumulate more kills for his Monster Encyclopedia.

One must know: even dripping water can wear away stone—not something accomplished overnight. Building up the Monster Kill Count also came from steadily accumulating over time.

He sank his mind into his consciousness to check his current progress.

E n um̀ а. id

He had now killed 3,050 monsters in total—less than a thousand away from triggering the next reward phase.

His entries in the regular Monster Encyclopedia had reached 39 types—only 11 more to reach 50 and unlock the draw for a new Talent.

Aside from the most common low-tier monsters, the number of monster types in any one region was limited. The further along one got, the harder it became to gather new entries.

Some monsters only lived in specific terrains. For example, Fire Elementals and Red Ants resided only in volcanic regions, while Sandworms and Dune Shredders were native to deserts. Gauss had no way of finding them near the Emerald Forest.

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

That wouldn’t make sense—neither scientifically nor magically.

Gauss browsed through the Monster Encyclopedia, quietly planning out his next few days.

Ẃӗb̄ ñо̆ v̆ ӗ l̂ Еn̄um̊ а̃

After roughly discussing things with Arya, they parted ways.

Gauss headed alone to the Adventurer’s Guild Hall and turned his eyes to the scattered minor commissions on the notice board.

The fall of Outpost Eleven, which Canopy Town was responsible for, had clearly impacted this vibrant green town—various missions now plastered the board.

「So many commissions.」

「I heard monsters in the Emerald Forest have been rioting again these past couple of days. Not sure why, but a lot of them charged out from the forest edge.」

An adventurer beside Gauss complained to someone.

「Our team was ambushed by a bunch of frenzied Kobolds on the way back from a commission yesterday. Thankfully, we were careful and didn’t get hurt.」

「It’s been real weird lately.」

「I heard Guild President Rich of Canopy Town still hasn’t returned. Ever since the incident at Outpost Eleven, he’s been completely missing. Don’t know if it’s...」

「Luckily, Coldgreen’s capital Farim has sent plenty of Cavalry Corps members to garrison here. Otherwise, I wouldn’t dare stick around Canopy Town.」

「The news I heard was that some big shot disappeared near Outpost Eleven—that’s why Farim deployed so many into the Emerald Forest.」

「Shh...」

Е̄ ň um а̌ .і̆d̃

Gauss listened calmly to the adventurers around him, feeling a surge of emotions.

If President Rich hadn’t returned for this long, something likely went wrong.

He felt even more deeply the extreme risk of being an adventurer. Even someone like Rich, a peak Master-class powerhouse, could fall to enemies and dangers beyond his capability.

One must never grow arrogant just because they’ve gained levels and power.

You had to keep your head down and develop steadily.

Gauss believed that with the Adventurer’s Handbook in hand, his future held endless possibilities. Often, there was no need to fuss over temporary gains or losses.

Ẃ е̄b̈ ǹ о̃ v̌е ĺ É ñ u mа̊

Thinking that, he refocused on the notice board before him.

Better to start with farming some small monsters.

His gaze swept over the various commission slips, automatically filtering out those too far away.

Even if they offered higher payouts, Gauss didn’t spare them a glance.

After all, he was here for ordinary commissions—not for money, but to train and remain close to town for safety.

Soon, a few commission slips caught his attention:

Wĕ ḃ ṅо̆v̈el̈ Е̊ǹ ũ mа.

Clear out the Goblin group wandering the western logging site of Canopy Town; deal with the Rampaging Boars near the farmlands; and eliminate another group of Goblins that had taken over an abandoned village.

The three missions were along the same route on the map.

In truth, the main goal was to hunt Goblins. The Rampaging Boars happened to be on the way—just a chance to pick up some wild meat.

「These will do.」

Gauss swiftly took down the three slips. As he did so, other adventurers who had also eyed those commissions found themselves beaten to it.

One was about to speak up when his teammate noticed the bronze badge representing a Tier 3 Professional on Gauss’s chest and quickly covered his mouth.

Gauss didn’t pause, turning straight toward the front desk.

「Why’d you stop me? That guy totally broke the rules—he already had other slips but kept grabbing more,」 the blocked adventurer complained with a scowl. 「Can he even complete them all?」

「That guy’s a Professional.」

Just those few words from his teammate were enough to shut him up completely.

Never mind then.

Still, he couldn’t help but grumble inwardly. As a Professional, wasn’t it shameful to come “snatch business” from us low-tier adventurers?

Е ǹů m ӑ.

「What a leisurely guy. Must be a rookie Professional, right?」 he muttered, though his voice instinctively lowered.

「If I’m not mistaken, that was Dragonman Gauss. Heard he’s pretty strong even among Bronze-rank adventurers... And by the way, he really loves taking ordinary commissions. He even has another nickname...」 His companion glanced at him with exasperation at his forced bravado and added an explanation.

「What?」

「The infamous Goblin Slayer.」

「Huh??」

Gauss vaguely heard the murmurs behind him and sighed without changing expression.

Еň üm̄ a

He had already given up resisting it.

He didn’t get it.

Why did this nickname always follow him into every new region?

Goblin Slayer, Imp Killer, Green-skin Reaper...

Even though his spectacular performance at Outpost Eleven had earned him the title Dragonman Gauss, people still brought up the name Goblin Slayer when they talked about him.

Could there really be some mystical force at play?

W̌ е̌ b̌nov̈е́ l̀ Е nūmа̀

Whatever. Focus on the commissions.

Goblins truly were the best practice targets for him—numerous, easy to dispatch, and rewarding.

He wasn’t about to avoid Goblin commissions just to dodge gossip.

That previous brush with Evil God energy was just a detour—the Goblin extermination was the simple yet fulfilling main questline.

He briskly walked to the front desk and handed the three slips to the receptionist.

The receptionist clearly recognized Gauss. As she took the slips, the first one on top was for the Rampaging Boar. But underneath were two more Goblin extermination missions.

Probably trying to cover it up a bit.

Her gaze subtly shifted between the Rampaging Boar and the two Goblin slips beneath.

Thinking she had seen through Gauss’s little trick, her lips twitched as she worked hard to maintain a professional tone.

「Mr. Gauss, you're accepting the Rampaging Boar extermination, along with the two nearby Goblin elimination commissions, correct?」

「Yes. Much appreciated,」 Gauss replied with a calm nod.

「Understood. I’ll process them right away.」

Е̃ ñ ũm̂ а̂ . i̇ d̀

The receptionist was efficient. As a Professional who was also gaining fame, Gauss had no issues taking multiple regular commissions—as long as it wasn’t excessive, the Guild wouldn’t object.

After all, he completed them quickly and cleanly, far more reliable than assigning them to several low-tier adventuring teams.

The only concern was that it might be a bit of a waste of a Professional’s strength.

Once the paperwork was stamped and recorded, she handed them back along with Gauss’s Identity Badge.

「Wishing you success on your missions.」

"Thank you."

W̆ еḃn ó v̈еl̃ Ẽn̂ um ǎ_

Under the faint gazes behind him, Gauss turned and left the Guild Hall.

The sunlight was just right, shining through the sparse clouds and casting a gentle warmth on his body.

Gauss swung onto his Chocobo and headed westward out of the town.

While on the road, he took some time on the bird's back to read the spellbook of Scorching Metal.

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

Now that he had reached Tier 3, reading these Tier 2 spellbooks had become significantly easier, much more so than for other Tier 3 spellcasters.

Part of it was because he met the class rank requirement. Additionally, his attributes gave him an advantage, and he also had multiple talents like Spell Mastery providing bonuses.

W̆ ѐ bn̈ о̇ vеľ. Е̌ n̂û m̂а̊

Knowledge quickly entered his mind in a rather brute-force manner.

By the time he finished the book, the Chocobo had already stopped. The first commission site had been reached.

The lumberjacks at the logging site noticed his arrival and quickly came to greet him.

"Are you the adventurer who took our commission?"

At first, they were doubtful when they saw only one figure from afar. But when Gauss approached on his Chocobo and they saw his build, any lingering doubts were dispelled.

"Yes. My name is Gauss."

Gauss lightly sniffed the air.

Besides the scent of fresh timber and some decay, he did catch a familiar stench mixed within.

Goblins really were everywhere—like oversized flies.

"Can someone guide me?"

Fewer than twenty Goblins. For Gauss, dealing with them was as easy as kicking a rabid dog by the roadside.

"Me!"

W е́ b̆n о̆ vе̃ l̂ Е̃n̆u mа

"I'll lead the way!"

The lumberjacks living here were more than happy to guide him.

The Identity Badge on Gauss's chest gave them immense confidence. If a regular low-tier adventuring team had come, they would’ve stayed as far away as possible for safety reasons.

But a Professional was different. Even common folk had heard of how powerful such people were. It even made them a bit excited.

They wanted to see firsthand how Goblins were slain. After all, witnessing a Professional in action up close was a rare opportunity.

"Let me! I was the one who first spotted Goblin tracks near the fence!"

Е̂ňüma..і̄ d́

"Bullshit! I saw them when I went out to pee at night!"

"It was me..."

Watching the workers bickering over the chance to guide him, Gauss couldn’t help but feel a few black lines pop up on his forehead.

To outsiders, it must’ve looked like they were competing for a lucrative job...

He raised his hand and pointed at the sturdy man who spoke first. "Just take me in the direction where they most frequently appear. No need to get too close. Leave the rest to me."

The chosen man straightened his back, smiling proudly. He exchanged looks with the others before nodding eagerly. "Alright! Mr. Gauss, come with me. I know where they usually come from."

W eb̄ ň öv.е_l̇ Е̌ǹ u m а

Gauss dismounted from the Chocobo, handed the reins to another worker, and silently followed the man.

Perhaps it was his first time being this close to a Professional, but the man seemed both excited and nervous, rambling as he led the way: "Sir, please be careful. There are probably quite a few of those damned little green-skins. A few nights ago when I got up, I saw them with weapons. Nearly twenty of them! Vicious lot. If it weren’t for that, we could've handled it ourselves."

"Alright. Thank you." Gauss followed behind, not saying much, but clearly listening carefully for intel.

It was already second nature to him—whether for elite monster commissions or routine ones.

His gaze lingered near the fences around the logging site. He soon spotted footprints just larger than a palm, and signs of damage to the sturdy fences.

He deduced that the Goblins had been scouting the surroundings, assessing the number of workers and whether there were any livestock or tools to loot inside, while searching for weak points along the barrier.

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

Such behavior was typical. It meant the Goblins had already marked the logging site as potential hunting grounds. If they weren’t eliminated early, it could lead to serious attacks later.

They soon passed through a field of chopped stumps to the outskirts of the logging site.

Gauss didn’t need any directions this time. He immediately saw numerous scattered footprints on the ground.

"These green-skin bastards come near the site every night. We even set up a few traps along the paths during the day, but got nothing. The traps were stolen by the little greenskins too."

This was the greatest problem faced by ordinary folk:

Goblins often moved at night, and in this era, most civilians suffered from night blindness.

En ů m̀ a.іd̈

This condition stemmed from a mix of poor nutrition, genetics, and economic hardship. It wouldn’t be resolved anytime soon. Meanwhile, Goblins had excellent night vision. That imbalance made night battles against them extremely dangerous.

On top of that, civilians spent their days doing heavy labor. By nightfall, they were exhausted—fighting nocturnal Imps was simply out of the question.

While pondering all this, Gauss’s peripheral vision suddenly caught a half-exposed head behind a thick ironwood tree.

"Shh. I see them." Gauss raised a hand to stop the man from speaking.

"Huh?" The man was startled by Gauss’s keen eyes. Looking in the same direction, he vaguely spotted a small, scurrying figure behind a tree.

"Mr. Gauss, it’s running away!"

Е.n̆ u m̄ a.іd

"Mhm," Gauss nodded. "I know."

He had deliberately alerted the Goblin scout.

At his feet, a Clay Spider had already darted forward silently.

This too was part of Goblin extermination tactics—putting the right amount of pressure on the scout.

It was crucial to make it realize it had been discovered, but not scare it so much that it would flee blindly and forget to return to the lair.

"Aren’t we... chasing it?" The man looked anxious as the green-skin vanished into the bushes.

Ѐ nu m̈ а

"It won’t run. Don’t worry," Gauss said calmly. "Thanks for leading the way. You can head back now."

"Ah? I... Can I tag along to watch? I promise not to be a burden."

Gauss met his eyes.

After a few seconds, he slowly nodded. "You can follow, but stay quiet. Once we reach the Goblin lair, stick close to me and don’t run around."

They were all adults, responsible for their choices. Perhaps the man just wanted to confirm for himself that the Goblins had truly been wiped out.

Gauss received visuals through the mental link with the Clay Spider before moving forward.

The man also tiptoed behind him.

In the forest, a Goblin scout darted swiftly through a leaf-littered woodland.

Above and behind it, a white Clay Spider jumped silently from branch to branch, locking onto the target.

As time passed, the surrounding trees grew denser and the light dimmed.

After about ten minutes of pursuit, the Goblin scout arrived at a hidden mountain hollow.

Large, collapsed rocks lay scattered here, forming a natural and complex terrain.

Е̌ n.um̀ а̊

The stench of Goblins grew heavier, making Gauss frown.

From beyond a vine-covered entrance to the hollow came chaotic and dense Goblin screeches.

Clearly, the scout had done its job—leading Gauss straight to their base.

"So... So they were hiding here," the man gasped.

Enuma ID

What was obvious to Gauss was nearly indistinguishable from regular woods to others. The lair was so well hidden that even with effort, it would be hard to locate.

The man glanced at Gauss, feeling a surge of gratitude. As expected, professional matters were best left to professionals. This adventurer had casually strolled through the forest and pinpointed the lair. He had no idea how, but he admired it.

Е ń um̃ a

Gauss had already "seen" the lair’s interior via the infiltrating Clay Spider.

There were more Goblins inside than the commission had estimated—nearly forty, not including the Goblin infants crawling and playing like puppies.

He pursed his lips, slightly concerned.

Not about the number itself.

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

To him, forty or twenty made no difference. In fact, it was a good thing—he’d rack up more kills for his Monster Encyclopedia faster.

But... for an ordinary low-tier adventuring team, that difference could be deadly.

Wе̊b ǹ о́ v́ е̃_l Ê n uḿ а

40 Goblins meant the presence of a relatively powerful leader, a stricter social structure and division of labor, and teamwork capable of producing more than double the effective combat power.

This meant that a low-tier adventuring team, previously able to defeat a settlement of 20 Goblins, might suffer heavy casualties—or even total annihilation—against double the numbers.

When did commission intel become this unreliable?

Surely the Goblins didn’t just recruit a bunch of new members after the commission was posted?

Gauss smacked his lips, unable to judge whether this was an exception or part of a greater issue.

According to rumors, the vast Adventurer’s Guild machine was backed by some sort of grand prophetic magic engine and intelligence-spell network. It functioned like a massive ritual system. Every branch submitted data to the provincial headquarters when receiving commissions, where prophecy and intelligence systems verified the accuracy.

For most standard missions within human-controlled territory, this intel was highly reliable.

"Mr. Gauss, should we...?" The logging worker was visibly nervous from Gauss’s silence.

"It’s fine. I was thinking about something else." Gauss refocused on the mountain hollow ahead. "Stand behind me."

Two more Clay Spiders darted out from beside him, accompanied by a Clay Goblin.

This time, the older worker saw them clearly. His eyes widened in shock at the "white monsters" that appeared out of nowhere, and his legs began to tremble.

"Relax. It’s my magic."

W̆ ẽ bn̂ ǒ.v_е̃ l̊ Е̄ n um̈.а̂

Gauss waved dismissively.

Under his control, the three Clay Spiders blocked another escape route from the Goblin lair.

The Clay Goblin boldly walked to the vine-covered entrance.

With a flex of its sturdy arms, the vines were ripped out by the roots.

Light instantly poured through the now-exposed entrance into the hollow.

Inside, the Goblin group that had received the scout’s warning were preparing weapons. At the noise, they turned toward the entrance alertly.

E n̄ úm̀ ӑ . іd

Dozens of eyes landed on that somewhat familiar yet alien figure.

"!!"

They saw a muscular Goblin with a pure-white body that looked exactly like them otherwise.

Many green-skinned Imps were stunned with confusion.

Two nearby Goblins even stepped forward, uttering curious grunts.

"BANG!!"

Е̊ ňu m̆ă

Before they could react, the white Goblin lunged forward with explosive speed. With a bone-crunching crack, its palm slapped into one Goblin’s skull, smashing it like a watermelon.

The second Goblin didn’t fare any better—its throat was caught in a vice grip, lifted into the air, and with a sickening crunch, its neck snapped and body went limp.

Instant kill—two Goblins down!

The sudden kin-slaying and overwhelming power left all the Goblins in the hollow stunned. For a moment, silence fell—then panic, chaos, and rage erupted!

"GAA!!"

"Yiyaa!!"

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

Some Goblins recoiled in terror at the mysterious invader, while others raised their weapons in alarm. A particularly thin Goblin in cleaner robes—clearly the Goblin Shaman—screamed in rage, waving its wooden staff. It tried to calm the group while ordering them to attack this "aberrant."

Under the light of its spell, the surrounding Goblins regained courage, their fear suppressed.

"Mwaaa!!"

Goblins with melee weapons charged the white Goblin in formation, while archers climbed both sides of the hollow and drew their bows.

In the face of this grand assault, the white Goblin remained utterly calm. It had only basic combat intelligence and absolute obedience to Gauss. Emotions like fear, fervor, or sorrow simply didn’t exist.

Moreover, to these Goblins, it was an overpowered entity.

Eň ü m ä

Though not large, its power was immense due to its clay composition merged with steel, magically hardened and far stronger than normal Goblins. It feared no pain, no injury, and lacked even a survival instinct. It was a true, cold-blooded killing machine.

It picked up a fallen weapon and charged. In the Goblin ranks, it tore through like a tiger among sheep. Every strike sowed chaos and death.

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

One side had a lone fighter, the other a massive force—yet the clash ended in utter one-sided slaughter.

"Naaargh!!"

Severed arms, crushed skulls, sticky blood, and twitching legs filled the ground under that not-so-large but utterly brutal white figure.

Gauss stood at the entrance, silently observing.

Еn û ḿа̃.і̆ d

Behind him, the logging worker was stunned.

He rubbed his eyes in disbelief, almost thinking he imagined it.

Though Gauss had explained earlier, witnessing a "Goblin" massacre its kin was too shocking and surreal for an ordinary civilian.

Inside the hollow, the efficient slaughter continued.

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

The Clay Goblin rampaged through the group like a tireless, unfeeling war machine. The courage the Goblins had just mustered crumbled against overwhelming strength.

Some tried to flee, but the Clay Spiders stationed behind mercilessly cut them down.

W̊ѐb nо̇ v̈ е l Е n̄ūm̂ а́

Only the Goblin Shaman showed some fighting will, but it wasn’t doing much better.

Each time it raised its staff to chant or buff its allies, a perfectly timed Magic Missile blasted the ground near it, interrupting its casting and forcing it to scurry for cover.

The magical backlash hurt its body, making it shriek in rage—helpless.

That caster was Gauss.

Calmly wielding his wand, he used the Goblin Shaman to practice Spell Upcasting, while also preventing it from supporting the others and slowing the Clay Goblin’s kill rate.

Time passed.

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

The number of Goblins in the hollow dwindled at a terrifying pace.

Crying and screaming grew faint.

At last, the Clay Goblin slammed its blood-soaked fist into the chest of a Goblin that was groveling and begging for mercy, crushing it.

Silence fell.

All the Goblins were dead—including the Goblin infants, who died the most gruesome deaths. The Clay Goblin, in a rush, stomped them one by one into paste.

The last Goblin Shaman cowered against a rock wall. As the Clay Goblin approached, it babbled in a tongue Gauss didn’t understand.

Ёńǔ m а̃

It likely mistook the Clay Goblin for some special kin and still hoped for communication.

Unfortunately, the Clay Goblin never replied.

The next moment, a javelin flew from its hand.

Slicing through the air, it pierced the Goblin Shaman’s chest and pinned it to the mountain wall.

「Killed Elite Monster: Goblin Shaman ×1」

Gauss raised an eyebrow at the notification. An elite of a new monster type?

Е̄n̄ūm̈а.і̆ d

He hadn’t even realized during his practice—it had felt far too weak.

Thinking back, it probably specialized in buffing others, hence it never got the chance to shine before dying.

Still, its death wasn’t without value.

He walked into the hollow, sensing the rush of spiritual essence from the Goblins—especially the Goblin Shaman’s.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

Aside from the essence gains, he had finally succeeded in practicing Spell Upcasting for Magic Missile.
