Chapter 234 : Forest Protector
Chapter 234: Forest Protector
After Arya finished communicating with the pack of wolves.
Only then did Gauss open his mouth to ask, “How was it? Was it related to our target?”
He paid attention to Arya’s expression, believing she must have gathered some valuable information.
“Perhaps.” Arya paused for a moment before relaying the information she had obtained from the wolves to her teammates.

As she spoke, she rubbed her temples.
Those wolves were like they had finally found an outlet for their emotions, constantly whispering to her all kinds of negative feelings and fears. She had expended quite a bit of effort to sift through them and extract information of actual value.

“Just like that.”
Wolves could be considered highly intelligent creatures.
Although there was plenty of useless noise, Arya managed to organize the information into a relatively detailed account through the use of “Animal Communication” combined with her own inferences.
To put it simply—
Е̄n̈u.ḿа̄
These five wild wolves had originally lived with their pack in the forest, hunting and resting each day, leading peaceful yet fulfilling lives.
But one morning, a group of Goblins riding mounts ruthlessly shattered their peace, surrounding and attacking their pack.
Even their strongest leader did not last long under the fists of that large Green-skin.
He was quickly beaten down.

Soon after, the rest of the forest wolves were captured one by one.
The Goblins did not kill them, but smeared a pungent black ointment onto their noses and fur. Once they had completely fallen unconscious, they were imprisoned in some place.
W ėb n о̀ v́е̃l̃ Е̂ nu ṁ а̊
That place held many wild animals like them.
Not only wolves, but also lynxes, bears, and other creatures had been locked up.
Male beasts were domesticated as mounts, while female beasts were reduced to breeding machines for the Goblins.
These five male wolves had only managed to escape because the door to their cage had malfunctioned. Relying on their lingering wild instincts and physical strength, they ran desperately until they reached the vicinity of a human village.
By attacking livestock, they barely managed to acquire enough food to survive.
But their condition was poor. The black ointment’s effects still lingered, leaving their sense of smell disabled and making them unusually irritable.

Gauss looked at the scrawny wolf lying on the ground, feeling a trace of sympathy.
Putting himself in the wolves’ perspective, it was indeed tragic.
Their homes destroyed, their kin enslaved, their she-wolves reduced to breeding machines for Goblins.
If not for luck, they would likely have already been brainwashed and fully domesticated by Goblins, becoming nothing more than mounts.
“This seems like the style of the Black Fang Tribe,” Gauss muttered.
Although from the wolves’ perspective it was impossible to confirm if those Goblins were indeed their target, there could not be many wild Goblin tribes capable of capturing and controlling so many wild animals.

“Do they know the location of that domestication site?”
“Not very clearly.” Arya stroked the wolves’ heads. “They escaped in a hurry, and with their sense of smell and other senses impaired, their perception of the location is even more blurred.”

Because her first contracted animal companion, Ulfen, was also a wolf, she had always felt a natural fondness for wolves.
“But we can roughly deduce the direction from their tracks,” she added.
“Mm.”
Serandur quickly healed several wolves. Once Arya told them to leave the village area, they were released.

Although the exact location of the commission’s target was still unclear, at least they had obtained some information—the Goblins were capturing nearby wildlife.
And since the party happened to have Arya, a Druid capable of communicating with animals, this clue provided a breakthrough.
They were no longer wandering aimlessly.
Upon returning to the village and informing the Village Chief that the wolves had been thoroughly driven away, the party then searched around the area.

Sure enough, they found traces of wolf fur and claw marks. Using these clues, they deduced the direction from which the wolf pack had come, and set off on the path to locate the Goblin tribe.
Two days passed in the blink of an eye.

“Chirp chirp.”
The forest echoed with the constant cries of insects, blending with the rustle of leaves stirred by the wind.
In this season of rising temperatures, the ambient insect chorus almost made one want to find a shady spot for an afternoon nap.
“The weather is getting hotter,” Arya said, wiping away imaginary sweat from her forehead.
In truth, today’s absolute temperature was not too bad—it was just far too humid, making it feel much hotter.
“Let’s take a break first.”

Gauss glanced at an old tree not far away as he spoke.
Although they had a direction now, the past two days of searching had proven far more difficult than expected.
Only when lost in the vast wilderness could one truly realize just how difficult it was to track down a single target.
Even though Arya constantly used Animal Communication to speak with the forest’s creatures and attempted to gather information, little came of it.
Fortunately, whether Gauss, Arya, Serandur, or Shadow, they were all prepared for a drawn-out battle.
Unfolding the camping tarp—

Gauss retrieved food and water from his storage bag.
As he laid everything out, he also drew maps on parchment for his teammates, transferring the information in his mind onto paper.

“This is Canopy Town, this is Charlie Village, this is where we found the wolves, and we’re roughly here now.”
On the slightly yellowed parchment, Gauss quickly and precisely sketched.
Thanks to the map function of the Adventurer’s Handbook, he was like a living cartographer.
In this regard, he might truly be the ideal candidate for such commissions. At the very least, he had a clear memory of all areas they passed through, preventing them from circling aimlessly and getting lost in the woods.

Arya and Serandur were already used to this.
But Shadow kept raising her head, astonished as she looked between the hand-drawn map and Gauss.
“How did you manage this?”
The hand-drawn map was unexpectedly detailed.

Not only did it include key locations, but also the routes they had traveled in the past two or three days, with environmental details noted as well.
At first, she thought Gauss had simply scribbled some details on a whim, but once she compared the information to their actual journey, everything matched.

“Talent… just talent,” Gauss said with a laugh.
“All right,” Shadow nodded.
She did not press further.
Just as the others did not ask about her ability to merge into shadows.
Respecting each other’s privacy when it came to abilities they were unwilling to explain was an unspoken understanding among teammates.
After briefly discussing their afternoon route, they began their lunch.

Today’s main course was white bread from Canopy Town’s bakery, paired with peppered dried meat. It was not Gauss’s monster-provision jerky this time, just some ordinary dried meat they had bought.
The frog jerky from earlier, and the Frost Serpent jerky afterward, had long been consumed.
In addition to bread and meat, there were nuts, oats, honey, and cheese.
Arya also brought out some wild fruits and vegetables she had foraged along the way.
Spread out upon the mat, the food looked abundant, enough to bring smiles back to their tired faces after a morning of travel.
Even without cooking, nutrition had to be balanced during a commission.

A good meal not only boosted morale but also replenished energy and eased fatigue.
Only when full could their bodies have the strength to swing swords, draw bows, and channel magic to cast spells, enabling them to continue their day’s adventure.

In the grander sense, food was a key part of logistics, directly influencing the state of adventurers, and thereby affecting commission success rates and even their survival.
After lunch, their energy restored, the party continued their journey.
That afternoon, they shifted their course toward another new direction.
After about an hour of travel—
E ňu̇ m̄а .іd̈
Just as Gauss’s party passed through a woodland draped with massive hanging vines, the air around them seemed to ripple slightly.
“Something feels off.” Gauss signaled his teammates to be on guard.
Raising their heads and looking around, they realized that without noticing, they had stepped into a part of the forest where the trees were significantly denser.
The canopy formed by the trees completely blocked the sky.

Only scattered shafts of light filtered through gaps in the leaves, casting shifting patches of brightness on the ground.
The air was filled with a strange mixture of floral scents.

Compared to other trees they had seen earlier, these appeared older and more lush.
Looking closely, they saw that many exquisite little houses had been built among the thick branches of these ancient trees.
These houses used natural hollow trunks, entwined vines, and polished wood as their base. Their roofs were covered with leaves or verdant moss, some even decorated with glowing mushrooms or swaying wildflowers.
Tiny rope bridges and wooden ladders connected these treehouses together, forming a staggered aerial village.
On the ground beneath the trees, soft, flourishing grass grew, resembling a green velvet carpet dotted with strange glowing flowers and cute-looking wild fungi.
Around the edges of the clearing, small carved statues of stone and wood were scattered about, seemingly serving as totems or boundary markers.

The only problem was that this village—whether the houses or the rope bridges—was far too small compared to the size of Gauss and his companions.
“This is—” Arya widened her eyes, captivated by the tranquil and beautiful sight before her.
“It must be a fairy village, right?” Serandur said softly.
Almost as soon as Serandur’s words fell, small heads suddenly popped out from the treehouses, behind flowers, and even from the mushroom clusters on the ground.
These tiny creatures were only about the size of a human palm. They had transparent, luminescent insect-like wings and sharp, pointed ears. Their “clothing” was woven from petals, leaves, and thin vines. In their hands, they held miniature spears or bows, seemingly carved from thorns or hard wood.
Hundreds of pairs of eyes fixed upon the four uninvited guests from all directions, filled with curiosity yet also caution.

“It seems like we’re surrounded,” Arya said quietly.
A figure, apparently the leader of the village, fluttered its transparent wings and flew out from behind.

It wore a blue flower as a hat, its wings shimmered with brilliant golden-green light, and its entire body radiated a unique energy.
When it opened its mouth, a string of rapid yet melodious sounds flowed out like music.
“Strange humans, please leave our home.”
As it gave its warning, countless tiny creatures around them tightened their grips on their weapons. At its command, they looked ready to charge.

But seeing how most of them trembled with fear, it was clear that they were terrified of Gauss and his companions, who radiated such dangerous auras.
“We mean no harm. We are adventurers who wandered here by mistake,” Gauss raised his hands and spoke gently.
Though this was his first time encountering fairies, the many books he had read described them as benevolent creatures.
Compared to pixies, however, fairies were slightly more martial in nature. They disliked strangers trespassing into their homes and would order intruders to leave.

They also had the ability to listen to the heartbeat of others, judging good and evil according to their racial standards.
Gauss indeed bore no ill intent toward these small beings, known as “Protectors of the Forest.”

To humans, fairies were generally considered a friendly race.
At worst, they would only use toxins to frighten or knock out intruders.
The fairy leader, hearing his words, fell into brief thought.
It seemed to be judging the truth of Gauss’s statement.
Moments later, it lowered its weapon.
“Big one, you are not lying. However…” The fairy leader hovered midair, wings fluttering. Its small brows furrowed slightly as it struggled to piece together words in the common tongue it rarely used.

“The forest has been restless of late. Please leave our village as soon as possible.”
Hearing this, Gauss stepped forward and said warmly, “We are here precisely to track down the evil Goblin tribe that has been polluting the forest and enslaving beasts. We came to put an end to the unrest.”
At the mention of “Goblins,” the companions behind the fairy leader clearly stirred, their faces showing strong disgust.
As one of the most common monsters in forests, Goblins were a nuisance even to fairies, who normally lived hidden and secluded. Inevitably, they were forced to deal with them often.
Given their values and long-standing conflicts, it was impossible for fairies to feel anything but loathing toward Goblins.
As the saying went, the enemy of one’s enemy was a friend.

The fairies, who moments ago were wary, suddenly began to feel goodwill toward the four upon hearing that they had come to eradicate Goblins.
Excited chatter erupted all around.

“So they’re kind humans who slay those evil Green-skins.”
“I want to kill the Green-skins too!”

The fairy leader quieted the excited crowd.
“You truly came here because of those Green-skins?”
“Without a doubt.”
Gauss nodded.

The fairy leader listened to his heartbeat and nodded in satisfaction.
“Please allow our warriors to assist you.”
Е ñ u̇m̃å . їď
Gauss raised his brows.
He had only stayed to gather information from these forest natives.
He had not expected them to become so proactive once they learned of his purpose—their attitude flipped completely.
Just moments ago, they were cautious and suspicious of strangers. Now, without hesitation, they wished to join the party and offer support.
Was it truly as simple as this? That fighting Goblins alone was enough to win their trust and favor?
Perhaps this was indeed “those with virtue have many allies.” Goblins had too many enemies in the forest. For a moment, Gauss felt as though the whole world’s races could unite against them. As long as someone raised the call, there would be countless victims ready to lend aid.

Still…
He glanced at their palm-sized bodies and weapons barely bigger than toothpicks.
He was not mocking them, but could they truly provide meaningful help?
Gauss’s silence seemed to alert the leader.
This female fairy immediately straightened her brows, becoming serious.
“Don’t think that just because we are small, we are useless.” With a flick, the sharp weapon in her hand whistled through the air like a steel needle, slicing it with a shrill sound. “Among our people, there are many elite warriors like me.”

As she grew serious, Gauss clearly felt the natural energy around her intensify.
For them to survive and grow despite their physical disadvantage, they had to possess some extraordinary abilities.

It was clear these elite individuals wielded a strength far beyond what their small appearances suggested.
“Besides, if you need information on Goblins, we’ve recently made some discoveries.”
“Please let my warriors join your team. They will guide you to the Green-skins’ location in the forest.”
Several fairies, each wielding miniature yet sharp and resilient weapons, flew forward to stand before Gauss.

Unlike the frailer fairies, these warriors—one in a hundred—radiated strong spirit, speed, and combat readiness.
“Please, adventurers!!”
“Let’s slay the Green-skins together!”
The little warriors chirped their pleas.

“Very well,” Gauss nodded at the determined fairy warriors before him, who radiated pure natural energy.
“We are grateful for your support. May I ask how we should address you, and these brave warriors?”

Seeing Gauss agree, the fairy leader’s face lit with delight, her wings fluttering even faster.
“I am Bluebell, the guardian of this village.”
After introducing herself, she pointed to four equally well-equipped and sharp-eyed fairy warriors: “This is Thistle, this is Dandelion, this is Glowdew, and this is Moss. They are our finest trackers and fighters.”
The one named Thistle, holding a miniature thorn spear, flew forward a short distance and spoke in a clear, high-pitched voice: “We do know quite a bit about the Green-skins’ movements. While we cannot be certain if they are your exact target, rest assured—we will follow you until your mission is complete.”
After introductions, the four fairy warriors temporarily joined Gauss’s team.
As thanks for their aid, Arya took out a small pouch of carefully collected special flower seeds, dried under moonlight, and presented them to Bluebell.

The fairies gathered curiously. Upon seeing the gift, they let out delighted cheers, their faces filled with joy.
It was clear they cherished this gift, imbued with natural energy.
“May the winds of the forest protect your journey,” the fairy leader accepted the gift, her tone becoming warmer. “Great adventurers, please be cautious in your search for the Green-skins. Allow me, on behalf of the fairy village, the forest, and the beasts, to express our gratitude for your righteous cause.”
With this vital information and blessing, Gauss’s party carefully withdrew from the wondrous miniature village, as the fairies bid them a lively farewell.
Once they passed through the vine barrier, the scenery returned to that of an ordinary forest.
Leaving behind the dreamlike fairy village, their “numbers” had increased.

Gauss’s group walked as usual, while the four fairy warriors flew ahead and around them. Their bodies and colors blended perfectly into the forest environment, sometimes stopping behind leaves to observe, other times darting swiftly through the branches, guiding the way.
Glowdew even shared some intelligence with Gauss: “Those Green-skins—they seem to be digging something. Recently, we often saw them carrying ore-like things deeper into the valley.”
