Chapter 189
The Baengri Clan’s Unwanted Granddaughter
Chapter 189
Yayul stepped in lightly and placed the tray on the table.
“Thank you,” Father said.
I tried to grab the teapot, but Father’s hand was quicker. So instead, I looked at the wooden steamer next to the teapot.

“What’s this?” I asked.
“I thought you might be hungry.”

Yayul opened the steamer. Inside were neatly placed dumplings.
“Huh?”
“They’re a little cold,” Yayul said in a slightly disappointed voice.
I couldn’t hide my baffled expression. Father was looking at Yayul strangely.

Can’t blame him.Who would think to eat in a situation like this?
I fiddled with my teacup and said, “Thanks, but I’m a little busy now, so I’ll eat them later.”
“No.”
When I looked at him in surprise from his firm tone, Yayul continued, “You said it yourself: You need to eat, no matter what.”

“Did I say that?”
“Yeah.”

I scratched the edge of my mouth. I often said a lot of random things, so I couldn’t remember if I had actually said that. But it did sound like something that I would say.
When we were younger, Yayul was much smaller and thinner than his peers and barely ever ate. Judging from how much he had grown since then, no one would believe that he’d had such a past.
“You haven’t eaten anything all night,” Yayul said in a concerned tone.
“Yayul is right. You shouldn’t skip meals,” Father said as he continued to watch him.
I was baffled even as I picked up the chopsticks. Why am I eating dumplings right now? All that serious talk about Cheon Guijo, Yayul, and the Vampiric Demonic Technique felt like they were part of a casual conversation.
Then Yayul said, “I have some for you as well, Great Master Baengri.”

“Mine as well?” Father asked after a short silence.
Yayul looked like Father had just asked him something so obvious. “Yes.”
I did my best to hold in my laughter, composed myself, and then said caringly, “Father, you shouldn’t skip your meals.”
After a moment of silence, Father said to Yayul, “Then come sit with us. Let’s eat together.”
Yayul shook his head. “I’ve already eaten.”
“Very well,” Father said.

I quickly lowered my head and giggled.
All right.I’ve got to eat to live.

I grabbed a dumpling and bit into it.
“Hm?”
“How is it?” Yayul asked.
“It’s delicious!”

The juice from all the meat inside filled my mouth. The meat didn’t smell, and the skin of the dumpling was also nice and chewy. The slight spiciness helped to cover up the greasiness of the meat.
“Really? I’m glad.”
After eating a few in a row, the spiciness began to flare up. I fanned my mouth and lifted the teapot.
“Is it too spicy?” Yayul asked.

“Mmm, just a little. What about you, Father?”
“I’m fine. It might be a bit spicy for you, Yeon.”

I waved my hand when I saw the disappointed look on Yayul’s face.
“No, no, I love spicy food. They’re so good! Where did you get these? Speaking of, the others must not have eaten either. I should tell them to buy some.”
“They weren’t bought.”
I looked at him questioningly as I drank my tea.
“I made them,” Yayul said casually.
Instantly, I choked and started coughing. The tea went down the wrong way, so I couldn’t help it.

“Are you okay? Sorry. I made them so they wouldn’t be too spicy, but I guess they still are.”
You think that’s why I’m coughing?
“You made these?” Father asked him while patting my back.
“Yes. The inn owner came in just now, along with food ingredients. Once I and the White Sword Squad members checked the ingredients, I made the dumplings. The cook came as well and started prepping, so everyone should be getting their meals soon.”
So that’s why he was asking whether we were finished up here. Another question in mind was answered naturally.
Father nodded and said, “Well done. You’re quite skilled.”

I finally stopped coughing, and as I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand, I said to him, “You’re right. Phew, these weren’t your first batch of dumplings, were they?”
“I sometimes cooked them when I felt like it.”

I had heard he lived deep in the forest, where few people were around. Sure, he could stock up on food ingredients, but if he wanted to eat dumplings, he would have had to make them himself.
Yayul continued, “You and I had dumplings before.”
“Hmm? Ah, are you talking about when we ate at that restaurant?”
He smiled slightly. “Yeah. I think back to that moment sometimes.”

“Didn’t we fight some kids back then because they provoked us?”
“Yeah. That happened, too.”
That was a good memory for him?
My thought must have reached Yayul because he said a little shyly, “The important thing is that I went there with you.”

Tap.
When I turned at the sudden sound, Father had placed his chopsticks on the table. For some reason, I could tell he was not content.

What’s going on?
Yayul also gazed at Father and then spoke like he had just remembered something.
“Ah, Great Master Baengri. Were you the one who told the others not to let me see Cheon Guijo?”
What was he on about?
Father stared at Yayul and said, “Yes. I told them to stop you from meeting him.”
“Father?”

When I called out to him, he shot me a glance as if telling me to stay put. He then asked Yayul in a somewhat cold voice, “Why do you want to meet him?”
“Just because.”
“Just because?”
“Yes. I just want to see what he looks like now.”
Well, it was a plausible reason in Yayul’s case. After all, this was the downfall of the vile man who had made him suffer. But I was curious. Yayul wants to see something like that?
“Why bother seeing him? It’s not like you have fond memories of him. For the sake of what is to come, you should minimize your contact with him,” Father said.

“Is that so?”
Yayul nodded in agreement but then asked again, “Are you going to take him to the Martial Alliance?”

Father frowned slightly. “You’ve heard about that already?”
“Yes. A member of the Beggars’ Association was talking about a transportable prison. Isn’t it for Cheon Guijo?”
“It is.”
“When do you plan on leaving? You were initially scheduled to do so by tomorrow,” Yayul said in a completely relaxed tone.

Father was silent for a moment before he said, “It will take some time to prepare the transportable prison. And with the state that Wan’s in right now, we won’t be able to leave immediately. However, I’m not certain as to how much longer we’ll be staying here.”
“Okay.”
“Is that all?”
“Yes.”

Father stared at Yayul and said, “The demonic cult ambushed the main base of the Martial Alliance, and since Cheon Guijo took part in it, I can’t just deal with someone who’s tied to the Martial Alliance incident on my own.”
“Yes. Do what you think is best, Great Master Baengri.”

Despite our concern, it was a carefree response. When I was about to ask him if he was okay, we heard a voice outside the door.
“Great Master Baengri, the new physician is here.”
Father rose immediately.

Four physicians came and left, all saying the same thing.
The initial shock had passed, and we were all solemn by the time the fourth physician gave his diagnosis. Perhaps it was because we knew this would happen. And now, the fifth physician was visiting.

The physician picked up his acupuncture needle box and said, “It’s impossible for me to treat him.”
“Is there really no other way?”
The physician sighed and replied, “How many physicians came here before me? Everyone in Akyang knows by now. You could bring a hundred physicians and still—”
The physician clicked his tongue.
“Anyway, I can’t. You could search the entirety of Akyang, and yet you would find no one. Perhaps the Divine Physician might be able to.”
At that moment, we heard a faint cough and a raspy voice.

“How do you expect him to bring someone who’s already dead?”
“Father!”

“Mister Wan!”
“You’re awake!”
Mister Wan looked at us with a satisfied smile.
“Yes. I guess I wasn’t seeing ghosts,” he said.
