Chapter 220
The Baengri Clan’s Unwanted Granddaughter
Chapter 220
I stared into the darkness before settling into a chair in a corner of the shrine.
“Do you remember what happened when you came to my grandfather’s birthday celebration? Myung suddenly fell into qi-deviation, and you protected me the entire time I was helping him with his qi circulation,” I said.
“Yes, I remember.”

After canceling his attendance at the alliance meeting and returning to the clan, Grandfather ensured that outsiders could no longer interfere with the incident. He might be the son of my father’s close friend, but he too was an outsider. This was also the case for both Yayul and Seo Haryeong. Grandfather relocated the outsiders a bit further away and took stringent measures to prevent rumors from leaking.
“It was my fault that Myung ended up that way.”

Namgoong Ryuchung frowned. “It can’t be. That was because of your aunt!”
He tried to refute but shut his mouth again due to a sudden realization.
“Yes. My aunt was the one who actually put Myung into qi-deviation.”
“I didn’t look into it on purpose.”

I nodded. The guests at the time only knew of it as a small commotion within the clan, but Namgoong Ryuchung was at the center of it all. He may have relocated to another room and didn’t interfere with the incident any further afterward. Still, there was no way he wouldn’t have known, not after he saw what happened later—that is, unless he was clueless.
“When I fell into qi-deviation, I already knew Aunt was the culprit.”
Namgoong Ryuchung looked at me with surprised eyes. “You knew?”
“But I just couldn’t find any evidence.”

I smiled bitterly. The clan’s internal household affairs were Grandmother’s domain, and Grandfather respected this. I couldn’t check on handmaidens and servants, for Grandmother strictly managed them. Most importantly, Grandfather had not been interested in me. If only Grandfather had paid a little attention to me…Forget it.Nobody is perfect.
I continued, “I may not have had any evidence, but there were still different measures. Later, after Grandfather started to grow fond of me, I could have told him then, and he wouldn’t have ignored me. He may not have found any evidence, but he would have ensured that such a thing wouldn’t happen again by keeping a close eye on Aunt.”

If that were the case, Aunt would not have been able to commit this crime again in the first place.
“But that’s not what I wanted.”
“What did you want, then?”
“Since she made me qi-wasted and made my father suffer, I wanted her to experience the same pain. So I purposefully kept provoking her, on and on,” I said in a sunken voice.
I smiled faintly. “I did it so that she’d do the same thing one more time.”
Namgoong Ryuchung looked taken aback.

I let out a deep sigh. “But I never expected Aunt to suddenly change her target to Myung.”
“That’s not your fault.”
I shook my head. “I egged him on so that he’d be in opposition against Aunt. I wasn’t bothered enough to actually deal with her myself. She wasn’t worth my time.”
I also figured provoking Aunt with Baengri Myung would result in her becoming enraged more quickly, but I never thought Jaegal Hwamu would cause her to shift the direction of her blade.
“Myung is arrogant, selfish, and has absolutely no shame. I also hoped he’d get a taste of his own medicine one day.”
Namgoong Ryuchung remained silent.

I continued solemnly, “But I never wanted things to turn out like this.”
He might not be qi-ruined, but Baengri Myung barely recovered ten years’ worth of qi recently. Baengri Myung was now close to thirty and had only obtained the qi he had in his early teens. Even if he were to train his whole life, he would never be able to recover from the gap caused by his qi-deviation. I was qi-ruined, so I was well aware of that pain.

“And now, in Myung’s current state, Grandfather is planning to let Father take over as the head of the clan.”
I lifted my head and looked at Namgoong Ryuchung. “I’m his only child.”
Namgoong Ryuchung’s expression suddenly hardened. He probably predicted what I was about to say next. He remained silent.
“I don’t plan on leaving the Baengri clan. And, Ryuchung, you’re the only heir to the Namgoong clan.”
Е̃ n̂ú m̀а̃
Young Madam was over forty, and as far as I knew, Namgoong Ryuchung wouldn’t get another sibling.
I stared at him. “Ryuchung, are you going to leave the Namgoong clan?”
The distance between the Namgoong and Baengri clans couldn’t be measured accurately, but it was at least over 1000 ri and a little under 2000 ri. Father and Mister Wan were dear friends, but had either of them seen the other in the past few years? Even if they mastered the martial arts and could move freely, if not for a serious incident, the distance prevented them from meeting one another. Namgoong Ryuchung and I could move about freely because we had yet to be adequately handed any clan-related duties.
Namgoong Ryuchung’s face slowly contorted. He probably knew the realistic difficulties as well, but he didn’t want to dwell on them. I noticed his chin tense up.

Or maybe he thought I’d leave my clan.
Namgoong Ryuchung then finally broke the silence and said, “And so, you knew? You knew that I—”

He couldn’t finish his sentence. His face reddened underneath the dim candlelight.
“That you like me?”
He suddenly glared at me. He was shocked that I could say such a thing so nonchalantly. I almost laughed, thinking that he was cute.
Namgoong Ryuchung soon said as if he had just given up on everything, “Since when did you know that I liked you?”
“Who knows? I wonder… I’m not sure, either. I just did,” I replied.
I looked at Namgoong Ryuchung and said playfully, “And you’re a terrible bluffer.”

Frustrated, Namgoong Ryuchung tilted his head slightly.
I smiled faintly and asked, “Then what about you? When did you realize you liked me?”
He said nothing. The way his mouth was shut, I figured he wasn’t planning on answering me. I was flabbergasted. He had asked me first, though! He averted my gaze, only to suddenly glare at me again.
“So, you were avoiding me because I like you? Because of our clans?” he asked.
I nodded slowly. If it were just some puppy love between kids, the distance would have been enough to shake off any feelings—out of sight, out of mind, they say. Besides, he could have met someone while we were apart. If that were the case, we could remain friends. Seeing him like this, however, made me realize that was a futile hope.
“Did you expect me, knowing that you liked me, to act oblivious and laugh along, knowing full well that Mister Wan and the young madam wished for us to be together?”

Namgoong Ryuchung’s face contorted as if I had struck a nerve. I couldn’t do that—not to Mister Wan or the young madam.
“When you came to Grandfather’s birthday celebration, were you aware that Grandfather and Mister Wan were discussing our marriage?”

“Not when I was there for the celebration. But I found out while staying at the Baengri clan.”
I nodded and said, “Grandfather and Mister Wan had pretty much finalized everything at that point. All that was left for them was to finalize the details at the alliance meeting, and Mister Wan just had to formalize my wedding with my father.”
Namgoong Ryuchung was slightly shocked. He was not aware of that part.
“I learned about it later as well.”

If my aunt hadn’t caused the incident, Grandfather would have attended the alliance meeting. If my wedding ceremony were to be held upon his return, there would have been no turning back. Well, there was that ambush by the demonic cult in between. Setting aside the said unforeseen event, it would have been the case.
When I first heard about the marriage talks between me and Namgoong Ryuchung, I was shocked and opposed it. Yet, upon reflection, had I opposed the idea with all my heart? I began to wonder, then realized that I hadn’t been completely opposed to the idea. That was why I didn’t oppose vehemently. I was planning to accept it, making the excuse that it couldn’t be helped should an irreversible situation occur.
“Ryuchung, aside from the demonic cult’s ambush on the alliance meeting, think about it.”
Namgoong Ryuchung looked at me curiously.

I slowly explained, “If you could turn back time and go back to my grandfather’s birthday celebration, what would you do?”
“I’d prevent it, of course,” Namgoong Ryuchung promptly responded to my ridiculous question.

I chuckled. “I wouldn’t. I would let Myung drink that poisoned spiritual medicine.”
He was shocked.
“Ryuchung… Chung. Even if time rewound, I’d still do the same thing.”
Why would I prevent it? It was a chance to lock up Aunt Euiran. Baengri Myung? What happened to him was certainly unfortunate. I believed that was my fault, but that was it. And the missed engagement with Namgoong Ryuchung? That too was unfortunate. But that was it.
Assuming that he understood, I placed the final nail in the coffin.
“My marriage with you is not worth it.”

I could see from his face that he was hurt. I kept avoiding him and beating around the bush because I didn’t want to see that expression, but alas, it had come to this.
I didn’t avoid his gaze and looked straight into his eyes.
“It’s not that I don’t like you. But I don’t like you as much as you do.”
Namgoong Ryuchung fell silent.
If it were him, he would have understood my intentions. The first issue was regarding why I didn’t intend to leave my clan, and the second was the depth of my emotions. I liked him but wasn’t willing to sacrifice anything for his sake. I also wanted him not to give up something precious because he had feelings for me. I wanted him to be with someone who could reciprocate his love.
It was a quiet night where even the night bugs didn’t cry. All that could be heard was the sound of leaves brushing against the wind. A breeze snuck in from an open window somewhere, tousling my hair as it tickled Namgoong Ryuchung’s hand.
