Chapter 255
The Baengri Clan’s Unwanted Granddaughter
Chapter 255
* * *
It was a cave filled with bats flying and fluttering around. Mister Wan looked down at the water’s surface with a somewhat disgruntled face.
The Namgoong clan warrior said while dripping with water, “It’s not too long. It won’t take more than one gak to escape.”

By gak, he meant fifteen minutes. The end of the cave was indeed an underwater cave. The entrance of the underwater cave was deep enough that our feet wouldn’t touch the ground, and it led to the valley of the mountain.
“W-we don’t know how to swim,” someone from the back mumbled quietly.

The voice echoed clearly inside the cave.
“And right before we exit into the valley, we need to dive for a bit,” the Namgoong clan warrior said in a bewildered tone.
Things were just getting worse. The escapee that the women mentioned before must have known how to swim.
“Judging from the sun’s height, it’s around Sah o’clock,” the other warrior on the scout reported back coldly.

By Sah, he meant between nine and eleven. The sun must have already risen. The distance wasn’t far, but it took us a long time to get across, having to move with eighty women across slippery ground all at once.
“The fire is at the northwestern area from here. It’s still burning, but the wind is blowing from the opposite direction, so it probably won’t reach us.”
“We saw a small village.”
“A village?” Mister Wan asked.

“Yes, sir. About five ri’s southwest…”
As he continued to listen to the report, Mister Wan looked at the women. They couldn’t swim, so they would each have to be carried out by the warriors one at a time. The Changcheon Group, comprised of Namgoong clan warriors, consisted of twenty people. Among them, if ten were to be assigned to scouting the area and guarding…

It’ll take half a day for everyone to escape.
This didn’t include the fact that the valley water through which we’d have to escape was freezing cold. We couldn’t pack much because we’d left in a hurry, so we had no changes of clothes.
We also have to worry about meals.
As I pondered while splashing my hand about the surface, I looked up inadvertently. I locked eyes with Namgoong Ryuchung, who was staring at me.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
“Huh? Ah, just thinking. The water’s cold, so we’d need to dry off the clothes as soon as we get out.”

As I was talking, Namgoong Ryuchung approached and grabbed my wrist.
“Wh-what are you doing?”
Without responding, Namgoong Ryuchung took out a handkerchief from his pocket. Just as he was about to wipe my hand, my guard came in between me and Namgoong Ryuchung and stopped him.
“Allow me, Young Master.”
Namgoong Ryuchung glared at my guard, released my hand, and backed off.
“Oh, my.”

“Ugh, that was such a beautiful moment, and you had to ruin it.”
Groans of pity burst out among the women who were openly watching us. I could feel the heat rising on my face. I could tell what sort of situation it was even without looking back.

Seriously, why does he keep acting like this?!
But if I were to say something in front of all these people, it would only be more embarrassing. I fumed internally and acted as nonchalantly as possible.
Just wait until we get out of here.
That was when Mister Wan called for me and Namgoong Ryuchung to gather.

He stood in front of us and said, “Yeon and Ryuchung. Come here, both of you. You two should go back first.”
“What?” I asked.
“Judging by the direction of the fire, it’s coming from the opposite side of the mountain. If we were to go back now, we’d have to go around the mountain, which would take longer. You’ll be cutting it close until you make it.”
Namgoong frowned and said, “Father, what are you even talking about?”

“Have you forgotten about the martial arts competition?” Mister Wan replied.
“There is something more important, so it can’t be helped,” Namgoong Ryuchung replied without hesitation.

However, I couldn’t do that. I couldn’t let Yayul get his hands on the Divine Demon Relic, but I couldn’t tell the other two about this either. I didn’t know how they’d respond. Namgoong Ryuchung must have sensed something was off when I remained silent, and he stared at me. Even Mister Wan was waiting for me to say something.
“Mister Wan’s right,” I finally said.
“Forget it. Even if you disa— Huh? What?” Mister Wan said.
“I said you’re right. I think we should go back.”
Mister Wan’s eyes widened, and he stared at me. Namgoong Ryuchung looked at me in disbelief with a slight frown.
Mister Wan came back to his senses and continued as he coughed dryly, “S-see? Even Yeon agrees with me. Your staying here won’t make that much of a difference. You just go on ahead and contact our clan.”

When Namgoong Ryuchung remained silent, Mister Wan continued leniently, “If you really insist, you can stay. Just let Yeon go fir—”
“I’ll go, I’ll go.”
“Tsk, I don’t even know why you acted so stubborn.”
After that, it was a breeze. My guard, Kongson Wol’s subordinate, Namgoong Ryuchung, his guard, and I were to go back first. We said our farewells to Mister Wan.
“See you later. Staying safe is more important than winning,” Mister Wan said.
“We’ll take our leave first.”

The Namgoong clan guard jumped into the water first, followed by Kong Sonwol’s subordinate. Next was Namgoong Ryuchung, then me, then my guard. I couldn’t feel the water stream at all. As we followed behind the Namgoong clan guard, who held a torch, he suddenly dove. I also inhaled deeply and dove.
The water wasn’t as dark as I thought it’d be. This was because it was directly connected to the valley. The sunlight shook as if it were shattering above the surface. As always, I glanced around. Then, my eyes widened after seeing something. When I opened my mouth, only cold water flowed in. I waved my hand and shot my face out of the water, gasping.

“Everyone, watch out! There’s someone else here besides us!”
Suddenly, Namgoong Ryuchung grabbed my head and pushed me down into the water with a splash. I was left disoriented as water rushed in through my mouth and nose. When I finally regained my senses, I saw blood spreading out like someone had released red paint across the clear valley water. The blood was trickling down from Namgoong Ryuchung’s arm. There was an arrow stuck in it. Had he been even a little late, that arrow would have impaled my face. Because I was distracted by him, I had failed to notice the attack directed at me.
My hair stood on end. Then, I saw an arrow pierce the water below where we had just been. Most of the arrows lost their strength as they were swept away by the current, but they sank deeper than regular arrows since they were infused with qi. Namgoong Ryuchung and I swam away underwater as arrows continued to shower down.
“Ryuchung! Are you okay?” I asked, gasping for breath.

“What about you? Are you hurt?”
“No.”
Namgoong Ryuchung smiled faintly in relief, then grabbed the arrow stuck in his arm and pulled it out. The blood spread out further than before, but there was no time to wrap his wound. Arrows flew toward us again. Namgoong Ryuchung and I immediately climbed up a rock.
“Are you two all right? It’s an ambush!”

The Namgoong clan guards, who had come out of the cave earlier and were patrolling the area, were busy deflecting the arrows flying toward us. A few of them had already been hit. The Namgoong clan warrior who went up first was nowhere to be seen. As if we had made a promise, all of us began to gather on the biggest rock in the valley.
“Cover me!” I then shouted at Namgoong Ryuchung.

Instead of deflecting the arrows flying toward me, I stirred up a wind to catch them midair. It was impossible to fire arrows from a long distance in such a dense forest. This meant the enemies were hiding but doing so close by.
One, two, three, four—after I caught four arrows, I infused them with natural force and threw them back toward where they had been shot from. I threw them by hand, but they were based on the principle of steering swords midair. Blocking out even the surrounding sounds, I placed all my focus on the arrows. The arrows flew past trees and bushes until they were beyond my control range.
“There we go.”
Direct hits—lights in the shape of people hidden between brushes fell. The shocked archers were left in disarray, and the flurry of attacks decreased dramatically.
“I need to contact Mister Wan—”
Just as I was speaking, I felt an eerie presence approach me and quickly broke away from where I stood. A huge dent was left on the rock where I had just been. The attack came from the other side of the valley. A man in a black mask was holding a sword. It was the man we had encountered before we entered the array yesterday morning. He was a strong individual, at least somewhere between master and grandmaster.

The man immediately proceeded to swing his sword at me. My golden eyes let me see where he would direct his next attack. I dodged the attack in a flowy manner and immediately counterattacked. I couldn’t stab deeply enough. I had barely nicked the skin underneath the hem of his clothes.
Ah, what a shame.
It was my own version of a good counterstrike. The attacker seemed shocked by my counter.
Rumble!Wham!
Namgoong Ryuchung was busy fighting off the men who had appeared after this man in black. The other warriors were in similar situations. I continued to dodge the man’s attacks. I knew that if I made a single mistake, I’d be sliced up without mercy.

Tens of parries occurred in just a short moment. My eyes and forehead felt like they were on fire. The more I parried, the more I realized something.
This man mastered a legitimate righteous faction technique.

Since I couldn’t figure out what sort of swordsmanship he was using, I knew he wasn’t from a prestigious righteous faction. But based on the traces left behind by his footwork, I could tell he was from the Martial Alliance. This man was very familiar with the Baengri clan’s swordsmanship—in fact, he even incorporated it into some parts of his own swordsmanship.
I started to feel his impatience through his sword. He began to panic when he noticed I wasn’t being pushed back easily. Seconds felt like days.
Then, there was a sound like a thunderbolt. A hurricane swept through, and screams could be heard from all around. The attacker withdrew his sword and quickly backed off. On the spot from which the attacker had fallen back stood Mister Wan, all alone.
