Chapter 40
The Baengri Clan’s Unwanted Granddaughter
Chapter 40
* * *
We’d already been chatting for a while by the time I finally remembered why I was here.
“Ah, that reminds me, why did you call for me?”

“Oh, right.” Ma Hyehyang helped Ak Joonghae up as he recklessly pulled himself upright. Now leaned back against his pillows, Ak Joonghae bowed his head to me.
I froze in surprise, still holding the peanut I’d been about to pop into my mouth.

“Thank you,” he said. “I called you here to tell you that. I know I should’ve gone to you, but as you can see, I can’t move yet.”
“But it was Father who rescued you, not me…”
“I heard everything. You sent Senior Euigang after us because of your dream, and you even sent a physician after him because you were still worried. Ah, come to think of it, did you get in a lot of trouble with Senior Euigang?”
I shook my head. “No, not at all.”

“Really? He just let you off?”
“Yup.”
I’d lied to Aide Shim so I could follow after Father with a physician, telling him that Father had told me to bring one with us. As the situation was urgent and neither Aide Shim nor the other guards thought that a kid would lie so boldly, they’d all believed me.
I’d even rubbed onions into my own eyes to make my crying more believable. There was nothing that I wasn’t willing to do in that situation. I was going to act first and face the consequences later. But to Ak Joonghae’s surprise—and mine—I hadn’t been punished at all.

“Weird... To think that he didn’t say anything to you about kidnapping the physician.”
“Yeah, you’re— Wait a minute, what do you mean, kidnap?”

“Hm? Isn’t that what happened?”
“No!”
Of course I had his consent! Granted, I had burst into his house in the middle of the night, and he had been pretty scared to find a bunch of burly guards standing at his door asking him to come with them...
Ak Joonghae laughed loudly. “I’m just joking. You should see the look on your face.” He stretched his hand out and pinched my cheek.
I pushed his hand away, hopped down from my seat, and bowed politely to him. “Since it seems like we’re done here, I’ll be taking my leave.”
“What, already?”

“Yes! Did you have anything more to say?”
“No, but...”
In my opinion, it seemed as though he had called me under the pretense of thanking me because he was bored of lying in bed. Just then, one of the servers from the inn came in cautiously. “Young master, I’ve brought what you asked for.”
“What took you so long?”
“The streets and the stores are flooded with people now that that kidnapper’s been caught.”
He’d actually escaped capture, but the rumors seemed to be saying otherwise. The moment the server passed me by, a sweet scent hooked my nose, my eyes following helplessly.

Ak Joonghae and Ma Hyehyang stifled their laughter at the sight.
“What is that?” I asked.

“Dragon’s beard candy.”
Dragon’s beard candy was a sweet snack made from thin threads of stretched rice taffy wound into a skein. Ak Joonghae smiled mischievously and said, “I heard this shop’s dragon’s beard candy is famous. I sent for some so you could try it, but if you’re leaving… Oh well, it can’t be helped. Ah, but what should do? I don’t really like sweets…”
I immediately sat back down in the chair. “IthinkIcouldstayalittlelonger.”
Ma Hyehyang and Ak Joonghae laughed out loud.

I was just about to place a piece of dragon’s beard candy in my mouth when a commotion suddenly broke out in the hall, and one of the Yeongjong sect disciples helping us came in bearing news. “Great Master Baengri has returned.”
“Father’s back?” I got up immediately, dashed over the threshold, and rushed out. I practically rolled down the flight of stairs and ran toward Father, who was just coming in. “Father, you’re back!”
With a stern look, he held me back by my shoulders. “I’m covered in dust.”
Ma Hyehyang had followed behind me. “You’re back early, Senior Euigang. Was there a problem?”

I knew why she was asking. Lord Wan was nowhere to be seen, and neither were Dang Soyong or the other Namgoong guards. Only Aide Shim came in behind my father.
My eyes widened as I took in the figure next to Aide Shim. Father glanced to the side and said, “I came back early because of this child.”

“A survivor?” Ma Hyehyang asked with joy.
Of course not, I thought, but my mouth fell open when Father nodded. A survivor? But there weren’t any in the past!
The boy had obviously suffered tremendous hardship. His disheveled hair covered half of his face, and his tattered, poorly-fitting clothes emphasized his skeletal frame. But not even dirt and rags could hide his eye-catching features.
The boy’s glassy black eyes looked straight at me, and my heart dropped in my chest. What…? My heart was pounding. Studying the child, I found something strange about him. He’s a kidnapping victim? For someone who had been kidnapped, he was eerily calm. To be exact, he had no expression at all on his face. Wasn’t it normal to be scared or shocked in his situation?
That was when Father asked, “Yeon, what do you have there?”
“This? It’s a snack Mister Joonghae bought for me. We were about to share it when you came back. Would you like some?”

My father’s brow furrowed at the sweet scent wafting from the unwrapped candy. “I’m fine.”
I giggled and offered it to the boy this time. “Hello, do you want some too?”
The boy just stared at me instead of accepting it.
“They said it’s from a shop that’s famous around here,” I continued lightly. “Here, try some.”
When he didn’t react, I pushed the candy into his hands. “My name is Baengri Yeon. What’s yours?”
The boy glanced up at my father. Father looked back at him with his usual expression, meaning of course that he didn’t come off as very approachable.

The boy looked down again. How are his eyelashes so long and thick? But just as that thought crossed my mind, I noticed a tear-shaped mole under his left eye.
Huh? My jaw dropped as I remembered where I’d seen this boy before. How could I possibly forget that face? Those eyes that narrowed with pleasure and the lips that crooked upward at the moment my head fell from my shoulders…

That moment was still fresh in my memories. And as if in confirmation, a small voice crept out between his lips and sank into my ears like a sharpened knife. “Yayul.”
The snack fell from my slackened grip.
* * *
Yayul made his first appearance fairly late in the novel. No one even knew at first that he was the villain pulling all the strings, as nothing was known about him aside from the fact that he was the notoriously powerful leader of the Divine Demon Cult’s death squad. I still hadn’t managed to figure out why he would risk exposing his identity just to kill me himself when he’d taken such pains to conceal himself until then.
Е ń ũ m̌ a
Yayul’s identity had only begun to be revealed in the second half of the novel. Originally from one of the martial world’s righteous clans, he was sentenced for an unspecified crime at a young age to be thrown into a place called the Valley of the Wicked.
The Valley of the Wicked was a sort of prison that the Martial Alliance used for the worst of evildoers. There was no need for guards, as those who fell there would never see the light of day again. Its infamy was well known. Yet, somehow, Yayul had managed to escape… burning with hatred for the Martial Alliance.
Namgoong Ryuchung had tried to investigate what sort of crime Yayul might have committed to be imprisoned in such a place, but he hadn’t found out anything more. Anyone who knew of Yayul’s childhood was long gone, and there was no need to ask who was responsible.
So…

Shouldn’t he be in the Valley of the Wicked right now? Plus, there definitely hadn’t been any kidnapping survivors the last time around! By the time the shock wore off and I regained my senses, I realized that I was now in my room at the inn, a teacup in my hand.
I need to talk to Father. I headed to the room next to mine where Father was staying, but found it empty. Stopping an employee of the inn who was passing by, I asked, “Have you seen my father?”

“Ah, that young master stepped out a few moments ago.”
What? Again? He just dropped a bomb on me and left!
“Thank you.” I bowed to the worker, then remained frozen in place for a moment before settling on my next destination.
