The door quietly opened then closed, and the sound of light footsteps on the stone floor began to grow distant. Eyes closed, Namgoong Mucheol said, “What a good daughter Euigang has.”
A man came stomping out from behind the folding screen. “What are you talking about? What do you mean that master stole Yeon’s Azure Elixir?” Namgoong Wan’s face was completely red with anger, his blood vessels bulging out of his neck.

“Didn’t you hear our conversation? It’s just as I said.”
“Is this why you asked for the Azure Elixir? Tell me!”

“Yes.”
“Father!”
“No need to shout, I can still hear clearly.”
Grinding his teeth, Namgoong Wan stomped loudly toward the table and slammed his hands down on it, the elaborate carp and lotus design inlaid around the edges of the table splitting under the force.

“The elixir, give it to me!” he demanded.
“What for?”
“To return it, of course!”
Namgoong Mucheol narrowed his eyes at his son. “I thought you wanted to give it to Ryuchung?”

“Why would I? Didn’t you see how he was treating Yeon at dinner? A bucket of cold water is all that he deserves!”
Nodding at the still-warm cushion across from him, Lord Namgoong commanded, “Sit.”

“Father!”
“Sit!”
Namgoong Wan exhaled harshly through his nose but sat down. Namgoong Mucheol clicked his tongue as he watched his son. “Cool your head. Why are you so foolish? Have you failed to learn the lesson that even a young child managed to?!”
“What lesson? That trust makes way for treachery? What your sworn brother did was—!”
Namgoong Mucheol threw the contents of his teacup at his son, who dodged it easily but couldn’t stop a few drops from splashing onto his clothes.
Shaking out his clothes, Namgoong Wan snapped, “Stop doing that whenever you have nothing to say!”

“I did it to knock some sense into you!” Namgoong Mucheol let out a deep sigh. “Even if you were to return the Azure Elixir to that child, she wouldn’t be able to handle it.”
“What do you mean?”
“Even if you returned it to her, if someone else were to try and take it from her, she wouldn’t be able to stop them.”
“As if anyone but your sworn brother would dare raise a hand against Yeon when she’s under the protection of the Namgoong clan!”
“How do you think he knew that she had the Azure Elixir in the first place? The news of Yeon coming out of the Divine Physician’s laboratory alive is spreading quickly. Those who know about the Azure Elixir are bound to show up as well. It’s already too late to brush this under the rug.”
“Why are you only telling me this now?”

Namgoong Mucheol rubbed his forehead. “It’s only been two days since you brought that child here! If you insist on returning the elixir, then at least wait until Euigang arrives and give it to him yourself. I won’t stop you from doing that.”
His son’s face contorted. “Would he accept it? And right now Euigang is...! If he were to drink the elixir right now, there’s no telling what might happen to him!”

“Yes, now is not the time for Euigang to be concerned about the Azure Elixir. You know this better than anyone.” Namgoong Mucheol then mused, “But judging by the fact that his daughter managed to find the Divine Physician’s laboratory, it seems that the heavens have yet to abandon Euigang.”

My mind was racing as I went back to my quarters. Even Namgoong Mucheol hadn’t known the reason the Divine Physician had stopped conducting his martial arts research. In fact, he’d been surprised to hear about it, asking, “Really? He wasstudying such a thing? Is that true?”
He also seemed to be oblivious to the special ability that I had received from the Divine Physician. Then again, it would be dangerous for me if people were to find out that a non-martial artist had this ability.

Someone was bound to try to steal it from me by any means possible. As my loss of the Azure Elixir proved, in this world where the strong preyed upon the weak, it was a sin for the weak to possess anything precious.
But why didn’t he use his ability to improve his martial arts right away? Why hide it this whole life, then suddenly start researching it in his old age? I couldn’t wrap my head around what the Divine Physician could have possibly been thinking.
The elderly servant who had guided me to my quarters bowed before leaving. I drummed my mouth with my fingers as I let out a long yawn. Thoughts were running through my head endlessly, but this child’s body of mine was screaming for rest. Let’s sleep for now and think later.
I stopped as I made my way inside. There was a black shadow in the front yard of my quarters—Yayul. He was standing outside the eaves in the moonlight, his eyes fixed on by his feet.

“Yayul? What are you doing here?”
He lifted his head upon hearing my voice, his eyes widening slightly, then smiled faintly.

I stared back at him, blanking out for a moment before regaining my focus. “You... Have you been like this the whole time after I left?”
He didn’t say anything as he stared at me. I grabbed my head. On top of everything, he was even in the same exact spot he’d stood to see me off. Unbelievable. He wasn’t some pup waiting for his master to come back home, what was he doing waiting for me this long?
But when I came to think of it... Yayul didn’t have anyone to rely on here but me. Just like how I had no one back at the Baengri clan compound.
“Did you have dinner?” I asked.
Yayul didn’t respond. How could he have, when it was clear that he hadn’t taken a step away from where he was now?
My temper surged at his foolishness. “Why did you wait? You should have just eaten without me! You didn’t know when I’d be coming back! What were you thinking?”

Yayul blinked and said quietly, “I just... thought something might happen.”
“What could possibly happen while we’re inside the Namgoong residence? Who would dare... Well, I guess someone did.” I laughed hollowly. “So you were standing out here because you were worried?”
“Yeah.”
Argh… I swallowed my sigh and nodded at him to follow me. “Let’s go.”
“Where? Your rooms are that way.”
“To the kitchen. Let’s see if there’s anything left.”

“I’m not hungry.”
“This is for me, though?”

Yayul followed me silently.

The next morning, Yayul opened his eyes when he felt a presence nearby. He could hear light footsteps approaching from the yard. Realizing that it was still dawn and the sun had not yet risen, he quietly rose from his bed.
It couldn’t be one of the servants. Yeon had said she was uncomfortable keeping a servant in her quarters, so they only came in the daytime when needed, returning to their quarters at night. And Yayul knew that he was the reason she refused to keep a servant around—to minimize his contact with any of the Namgoong clan members. It was for his safety that she was willing to endure the inconvenience.

Yayul left their quarters without making a sound. A girl was making her way across the yard. He remembered that she’d arrived two days ago, and that her name was Seo Haryeong.
Spotting Yayul, she stopped for a moment before moving toward him. “Why are you out instead of Yeon?”
“Yeon?”
“Yeah! We decided to call each other by our names.” Seo Haryeong puffed up her chest in a show of pride. She then came back to her senses and asked, “Oh, yeah. So where’s Yeon?”

“Sleeping.”
“She’s still sleeping?”

Yayul glanced up at the sky where the sun was still noticeably absent.
“Yeon said she was going to come see me train today, but she’s still asleep?” Haryeong asked in amazement.
“I don’t know anything about that. Leave.”
Yayul turned away from her to reenter the building. Scowling at being treated like a nuisance, Seo Haryeong burst out, “No! I’m going to see for myself. Yeon!” She suddenly slipped past Yayul and ran inside.
Yayul stretched his hand out to grab Seo Haryeong but briefly hesitated. In that short moment, Seo Haryeong had already shot ahead. Yayul hurried after her.
“Oh... She really is asleep.” Her boisterous voice turned as quiet as a mouse’s.

Yayul growled, “Get out, right now.”

“Haryeong came this morning?”
Wow, how diligent. I’d told her that I would go visit her, but I hadn’t expected her to come seeking me out at the crack of dawn.
“She came all the way into your bedroom.” Yayul had a slightly irritated expression on his face.
“Huh?”

“She just barged in, so I couldn’t stop her. I could have caught her...”
“No, you were right. You’re strong, so you might’ve left another bruise on her.”

Luckily, he must have remembered what I had told him about not using his strength needlessly against other people.
“Did her eyes look all right?”
“Eyes?”
“Yeah. They weren’t swollen or anything?”

Yayul thought for a moment and said, “I don’t remember.”
I nodded and placed my spoon down. Soon, a servant entered and collected my plates before leaving, Yayul following behind.
When he returned, I’d finished putting on my coat and was in the middle of finding my shoes. He handed me a bowl of medicine. “Here.”
I froze, took the bowl, and placed it on top of the table. When I stood up again after finding and putting on my shoes, I noticed that Yayul was still staring at the bowl. Feeling a little guilty, I told him, “I’ll drink it when I get back.”

He cut his eyes at me. “You said that yesterday too, and then you never drank it.”
“Did I...?” I laughed.

“Yes. You did.”
I pouted involuntarily, then lifted my head shamelessly and pronounced, “It’s normal for kids to not want to take their medicine.”
Yayul didn’t say a word.
