Chapter 25. The butler gave a bitter smile.
There were times when the duke’s attitude toward Cliff felt unfamiliar. This time was no exception. He seemed generous toward Cliff, yet at the same time treated him like a complete stranger.
Still, one thing was clear.
‘His Grace has expectations for Sir Cliff.’
That was why he was waiting for Cliff to stand on his own.
There was no doubt that Cliff was treated differently from the other illegitimate children. However, wanting to raise him as a son and acting as the head of the ducal house were two firmly separate matters.
Е̂nǔ m а . і d.
Because of that, the duke often felt regret.
That Cliff had been born not to the duchess, but to an ordinary maid.

Even so, there might have been a chance.
“Your move.”
“Excuse me.”
At the duke’s words, the butler moved a piece on the board.

Chess between the two of them.
In this ducal house, the only person who could rival the duke was the butler.
That was why, just as in the past, the time they spent together had increased.
“He is a very clever child.”

The duke spoke.
“And the one who first told me that was you.”

He did not mention the name, but the butler knew exactly whom he meant.
“In all my years, I have never seen mana as pure as Sir Cliff’s.”
“I have heard that many times. And… the boy’s intellect was outstanding as well.”
“He possessed the talent to become the greatest mage… a true genius.”
“The greatest mage, you say? The most important thing—mana capacity—was insignificant. He must have taken after his mother.”
Regret was evident in the duke’s voice.

The butler nodded in agreement.
He himself had been the one to teach Cliff magic, and so he understood Cliff’s talent better than anyone.
Only one thing was lacking.
‘If only it had been something else…’
Perhaps if Cliff had truly been born to the duchess, things might have been different.
Both the ducal house and his maternal family would have spared no expense in providing elixirs.

“Mana capacity is something half determined at birth, no matter how much one trains. Unless one is an elf with a long lifespan, humans can only increase their mana capacity very little after birth.”
“That is true.”

“That is why everyone goes mad over elixirs. But the boy’s vessel is too small. An elixir capable of expanding that vessel… appears perhaps once every hundred years.”
……
The butler fell silent, acknowledging the truth of the words.
He knew it all the more clearly because he had assessed Cliff himself.

“To obtain such an elixir… one would have to slay something like the Tyrant of the Rajahar Sea.”
“An impossible goal.”
“Indeed. We do not even know where in the vast Rajahar Sea that tyrant dwells, and even if we met it, we could not defeat it.”
The Rajahar Sea.

A place where countless merchant ships sailed and pirates prowled.
Incidentally, all ports along that sea enjoyed prosperity.

‘Even on the supposedly underdeveloped Eusta Peninsula, the coastal ports are different.’
Many in the central regions did not realize this.
The southern part of the Eusta Peninsula had accumulated far more wealth than expected, all thanks to trade along the Rajahar Sea.
“There is a river in that boy’s territory that leads to the sea. He must conduct trade through that river. Relying on others for trade has reached its limit.”
The butler nodded at the duke’s words.
However, there was something even the duke did not know at that time.

That the very tyrant of the sea lived in the river he had just mentioned, and that it would be slain by Kyuwung.
The duke never imagined that.
This was a conversation that had taken place in the duke’s study on the day the butler reported Barton’s meeting with Tom.

GULP.
Cliff swallowed the Sea Dragon’s heart that Kyuwung had given him.

At first, there was an instinctive sense of rejection.
It was a petty concern, but he was worried about the texture and taste. He thought swallowing the raw heart of such a grotesque creature would be difficult.

‘Huh?’
That thought vanished the moment it entered his mouth.
What he thought would be flesh melted away the instant it touched his tongue.
Instead, it felt as though something enormous was surging down his throat and into his stomach.

‘Mana!’
It was unmistakably the Serpent’s mana.
Cliff finally understood why Kyuwung had divided it into four pieces.
The energy contained within the Serpent was far too intense and vast to pour into his small vessel all at once.

Absurdly enough, Cliff felt that this moment was the greatest crisis of his life.
‘…I am going to burst!’

Even after being quartered, the power was overwhelming.
Cliff had never handled mana of this magnitude before.
It felt as though his body might explode.
“You must concentrate! You must not lose consciousness!”
Theobald shouted from beside him.
“Kyuwung!”

Kyuwung cheered him on as well.
Hearing their voices, Cliff clung desperately to his fading consciousness.
The energy felt as though it would expand him from within.
As he gradually calmed it, Cliff recalled the knowledge he had once learned.
The swirling power slowly began to take the shape of a ring.
‘It is working!’

One formed.
A mana circle that Cliff could never have achieved with his former reserves was created.

It did not end there.
Even after one ring was completed, excess mana continued to rage.
He controlled it and formed a second circle outside the first.
HUM.

‘Done!’
Success.
The first was difficult, but after that, it felt almost easy.
Before he realized it, two mana circles were spinning within him.

Without stopping, Cliff formed a third.
He began to feel his mana running thin. However, the three rings rotated and drew in mana from the surrounding air.

Only then did Cliff understand why the family had given up on his magical training.
‘This really was a case of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.’
One had to create at least a single mana circle.
Only then could one’s growth accelerate. In other words, Cliff, who had formed even an incomplete third circle, now drew in ambient mana at a rate incomparable to before.
That mana filled the gaps of the third circle.
“Haa.”

Cliff let out a breath.
Just moments ago, he had been somewhere between an ordinary person and a mana user.
In this brief instant, he had become a true mage.
‘To think I completed three circles…’
He was still a low-tier mage.
But the fact that he had undeniably become a mage was what mattered.

And ordinarily, the wall between a low-tier mage and a mid-tier mage was immense.
‘Three circles are enough for now.’

Of course, there was still a problem.
While at the ducal house, he had learned the basics of magic and how to handle mana, but he had never learned any actual spells.
He knew no magic.
‘Does that even make me a mage?’
