Chapter 30 - Owner of the Grimoire (2)
Chapter 30: Owner of the Grimoire (2)
TL/ED – Enuma ID
Agency for Paranormal Response, Special Task Force conference room.
A weekend farm disguised as a wizard’s workshop, and a national-disaster-level grimoire.
A formal meeting was being held regarding <De Vermis Mysteriis>.

“Based on the evidence collected from underground, the owner of the workshop was indeed Kim Mi-ryeo. It appears she died after failing to tame her familiar.”
“Kim Mi-ryeo. She’s the daughter of Chairman Kim from the ○○ Group, right? What are they saying about this?”

“They claim they didn’t know. Said they’re truly sorry their child caused such trouble, but… well, damn.”
At that moment, a low voice echoed through the conference room.
“You mean Chairman Kim, who donates the most money to our Agency. For now, let’s just leave it at that.”
Immediately, all the agents present cautiously turned their gaze toward the head of the conference table.

Given the nature of the topic, the meeting was being led by,
A man with a well-trained body, younger-looking than his actual age, with languid yet cold eyes.
-Shin Do-ryong, Director of the Agency for Paranormal Response, the organization to which the Special Task Force belongs.
Shin Do-ryong gestured with his hand as if to say not to waste time, pushing the meeting forward.

“Let’s move on to the next issue, Team Leader Shin.”
“…Yes.”

A calm-looking woman with black hair.
Team Leader of Special Task Force Team 3, Shin Si-on, stood up at the director’s call and continued the meeting.
She brought up a presentation with information about <De Vermis Mysteriis>, the grimoire that had been placed atop Kim Mi-ryeo’s corpse.
“Some of you may not be familiar with it.”
A black-and-white photo of a metal-covered grimoire appeared on the presentation screen.
“This is <De Vermis Mysteriis>, a grimoire designated as a national-disaster-level threat by the Wilmers Foundation, an international organization that responds to paranormal incidents.”

One of the agents raised their hand and asked a question.
“I’ve heard of it… but what exactly does ‘national-disaster-level’ mean?”
It’s not like it’s some government-level authority. Calling it a national disaster out of nowhere makes it hard to grasp.
“As the term suggests, it refers to a level that poses a threat to the existence of the nation or the maintenance of the societal system.”
Si-on’s calm voice rang out.
“If it appears or is misused, it can lead to mass casualties or disasters, potentially triggering an apocalyptic event.”

“…However, due to its level of danger, most who obtain <De Vermis Mysteriis> end up destroying themselves, unable to handle the grimoire. That’s why it’s not widely known.”
As the presentation continued, a black-and-white photo appeared of a beautiful woman with an elegant air, black hair, and a black funeral dress.

“She was the owner of <De Vermis Mysteriis> during World War I and II.”
In her hand was the metal-covered grimoire <De Vermis Mysteriis>.
…And contrary to her cool expression, she was flashing a V sign at the camera.
“She was feared among other wizards and referred to as ‘She Whose Name Must Not Be Spoken.’ Her notoriety made the danger of the grimoire known.”

Team Leader Park spoke in a disinterested tone.
“That nickname sounds like she’s the type who’d storm a wizarding academy and get beaten up by a high schooler.” (TL: Harry Potter)
“…Nicknames like that were trendy in those days.”
Regardless, Si-on continued the meeting.

“In the end, she was defeated by Father Johan of the Vatican, who at the time was the master of the grimoires <The Book of the Angel Raziel>, <The Key of Solomon>, and <The Eighth Book of Moses>.”
“<De Vermis Mysteriis> was sealed and stored at Miskatonic University… but given its reappearance, it seems the seal was broken upon finding a compatible master.”

Now that the general background had been explained.
“The familiar bound to <De Vermis Mysteriis>, the Invisible Vampire, is a dangerous entity as well.”
“But compared to the spells within the grimoire, it’s merely an accessory. According to the Cthulhu Mythos-”
Si-on explained the forbidden spells contained in <De Vermis Mysteriis> that even wizards feared, yet still desired to possess.
The secret art of physical takeover, transforming one’s body into maggots to invade and steal another’s brain and body.
The forbidden art of time regression, sending one’s consciousness or current body back into the past as is.

And the most dangerous of all.
“I don’t know if it really works… but supposedly, it contains a summoning spell for the Great Old One called the ‘The Worm That Gnaws in the Night’, which devoured and destroyed the planet Shaggai in a distant galaxy.”
Team Leader Park couldn’t hold back and spoke up.
“Wait, wasn’t that written by a wizard from the Crusades? Fuck, why would they suddenly summon a giant space worm?”
Si-on rested her chin on her hand, thinking for a moment, then spoke.
“The cover of <De Vermis Mysteriis> is said to be made from meteoric iron, a meteor that fell from the sky. …It might be connected to that.”

“Also, Damascus is where the original version of the Necronomicon, Al Azif, was created. It’s likely it was influenced by the foreign occult lineage.”
The Special Task Force members fell silent. It was already a headache dealing with the human slaughterhouse facility connected to Chairman Kim.

And now, a national-disaster-level grimoire…
“………….”
Right now they were controlling the information, but…
But if the fact that this grimoire had been in Korea were to become known, no one could imagine how many wizards might flock to it.

They had been working so hard all this time, yet the work just kept piling up.
The members of the Special Task Force quietly hoped that the vanished <De Vermis Mysteriis> had gone abroad to find a new master somewhere far away.
And they wished, just like Kim Mi-ryeo and the previous owners, that the new master would self-destruct.
After a few more exchanges, as the meeting wrapped up naturally,

Si-on cautiously approached Shin Do-ryong and spoke.
“Director, I have something to tell you in private.”

“Hm? Alright. Come to my office.”
Shin Do-ryong nodded readily and led Si-on into his office.
As she sat on the sofa in the director’s office, Si-on’s pupils wavered for a moment.
The secretary had placed black tea and a strawberry cake in front of her, as if setting out a snack.
“…Director, what is this?”
Shin Do-ryong signaled the secretary to step out, then smiled gently at Si-on and said,

“When it’s just the two of us, call me Dad. You like strawberry cake, don’t you? Eat while we talk.”
“I’d like to keep work and personal matters separate.”
At his daughter’s admirable words, Shin Do-ryong chuckled as if he found it endearing.
“My Si-on has grown up. But still-”
He continued in a soft voice.
“If you wanted to separate work and personal life, you shouldn’t have joined a workplace where your dad is the director.”

“It’s impossible from the moment you’re my beloved child.”
Si-on looked at Shin Do-ryong and spoke calmly.

“You’re the one who taught me the breathing techniques and how to fight anomalies, Director.”
“That was to protect yourself in case something happened. I didn’t teach you so you’d join the Special Task Force.”
Shin Do-ryong narrowed his eyes briefly as he looked at Si-on, then relaxed them.
He felt he should show a stricter side sometimes.

‘She’s got my eyes… but her looks are just like her mother’s.’
Whenever he looked at Si-on, who resembled the woman he loved, the late mother of his child, his heart would soften.
“…So, what is it you wanted to say?”
“I think concluding that Kim Mi-ryeo died because she failed to control <De Vermis Mysteriis> is a bit premature. Regardless of the crimes she committed… I believe Kim Mi-ryeo,”

Si-on spoke cautiously.
“-may have been killed by the real master of <De Vermis Mysteriis>.”

Shin Do-ryong rested his chin on his hand, tapping lightly around his lips with his index finger as he spoke.
“Go on.”
Si-on herself had called it speculation, but after hearing her full theory, Shin Do-ryong nodded and said,
“I’ll admit, the man named Kim Yo-han could be suspicious.”
That the suspect in the university massacre, Kim Yo-han, had found out by chance that Kim Mi-ryeo attended the same university.
That he may have killed her to cover up his own crimes, deliberately left behind <De Vermis Mysteriis> as evidence, and even intentionally revealed the Invisible Vampire.

It was a plausible theory.
“But the only thing supporting your theory is your own suspicion toward this man, Kim Yo-han. You know that too, right?”
Si-on nodded.
“…Yes.”
“Right. I’ve worked in the field too. I know what field instincts are. And of all the people present in that university classroom, he was the most suspicious.”
Shin Do-ryong spoke in a low voice.
Е́n ũ m̆ а̌ . і̆ d
“But there’s no evidence that Kim Yo-han is really the master of <De Vermis Mysteriis>, and this isn’t the time to spread our manpower thin.”
Kim Mi-ryeo’s father, Chairman Kim, who ran the human slaughterhouse disguised as a ranch.

“Sure, a chaebol’s daughter might get a lot of spending money, but would she have enough to buy a ranch and build a large-scale underground facility beneath it? And could she really carry all that out without the group chairman knowing?”
“…She couldn’t have.”
“Exactly. He claims he didn’t know, but that old man Chairman Kim is a hundred percent behind it. I bet there are more facilities like that fake ranch.”
Shin Do-ryong’s eyes narrowed sharply. They gleamed coldly.
Еn̈ům̆ а .ĭ ḋ
“He’s slipped through the cracks by relying on his connections, but… we have to use this chance to root him out completely.”
Shin Do-ryong relaxed his eyes and spoke to Si-on in a soft but firm voice.
“That’s why I want you to postpone your personal investigation. That’s not what matters right now.”
Si-on looked down at the now-cold black tea and replied.

“…Understood, Director.”
“Tsk. I told you to call me Dad.”

Shin Do-ryong added, sounding a little hurt.

Yo-han’s tiny studio apartment.
After reading through the pages that had been written in incomprehensible language until now, Yo-han narrowed his eyes slightly.
He lightly tossed <De Vermis Mysteriis> onto the desk.
Clang.

He let out a sigh.
“Haah… Why is there not a single decent spell in this thing?”
When the pages fluttered open, he’d half-hoped a hidden real spell, like Fireball, might appear.
Instead, the three dumbass spells came out.
First, the spell that turns your body into maggots to steal someone else’s body?
If I turn into maggots, am I still “me”? I’d just be brain-eating maggots.

I’ll say it again and again, but I am most important to myself. Precious.
I never wanted to become anything else.

Second, the spell that lets you go back to the past?
This one’s seriously a no-go.
I’ve read Cthulhu stories, so I know. According to the lore, in the cracks of time live a race called the Hounds of Tindalos.
You’d normally never encounter them, but if you cross between times, you’ll be observed by them and end up being hunted for the rest of your life.

And besides that, sure, time regression stories are popular these days, and I like them too, but
In subculture, time travel as a theme never ends well.
Something always goes horribly wrong, chaos from butterfly effects and whatnot.
You’d be better off not doing it at all.

And lastly, the third one, this one is the most hopeless of all.
Summon a giant cosmic worm to eat Earth?
Wë b ǹō v̊ е l Е̇ nu m̈а̊
What then? I live in space? Move to Mars?
As if I’d ever use one of these three dumbass spells. No way.
I can feel how royally screwed I’d be if I used them.
Exhausted, I slumped back in my chair.
‘Yeah… let’s face it. …There’s no Fireball.’
This is more shocking than not having parents.

“Gyaa?”
As I sprawled out, Grizzly came over and rubbed his head against my hand.
“……….”
I patted Grizzly’s head.
“Gyaa~.”
Seriously, what would I have done without Grizzly? …Well, yeah, if the university murder case hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have had this headache either.
E n̆ ūmа . і d̆
But that’s already in the past, what matters is my current situation, right?
From what I can tell, the best thing about <De Vermis Mysteriis> is Grizzly.

‘…And, well, there are a bunch of other spells in here.’
I opened up <De Vermis Mysteriis>, which, with all its landmine-level spells, felt more like it should be called <Mysteries of the Minefield>…
And then turned to <The Lesser Key of Solomon> to study.
No point learning weird stuff, time to study magic the proper way.
