Chapter 31 - Owner of the Grimoire (3)
Chapter 31: Owner of the Grimoire (3)
TL/ED – Enuma ID
An old man with a wrinkled face speckled with age spots.
Kim Mi-ryeo’s father, and the true owner of the fake ranch that had been operating as a human slaughterhouse.
The chairman of ○○ Group, Chairman Kim, tapped his index finger on the dark red-covered Grimoire, <Cultes des Goules>, resting on his luxurious desk.

“So, that Kim… Kim… was it Kim Mi-ja?”
Chief Kim, a man with the look of a well-educated gangster, spoke cautiously.

“…It’s Kim Mi-ryeo, Chairman.”
Chairman Kim’s face contorted.
“Damn it! When you have over fifty kids, you can’t memorize every single name! It’s absolutely not because I’m getting old! It’s not because I’m about to die!”
As if exhausted from talking, Chairman Kim leaned back in his chair.

“Forget it. None of that matters anyway. …That’s confirmed, right? That <De Vermis Mysteriis> has appeared.”
Chief Kim answered immediately so as not to upset Chairman Kim.
“Yes, according to internal intelligence from the Agency for Paranormal Response, that appears to be the case. However, it vanished quickly, so we’re not sure if it’s still in Korea.”
“…They say Miss Mi-ryeo was chosen but failed to maintain control. Could that be true?”

Chairman Kim looked down at the <Cultes des Goules>.
“They’re my children, but… I can’t imagine any of them being chosen by a Grimoire.”
Е̄ n um̊ а̄.
After all, even the Grimoire he currently possessed, the <Cultes des Goules>, hadn’t chosen him; he’d received it from a Vampire.
“It probably just appeared by sheer coincidence, or else….”
Chairman Kim’s mouth opened, revealing beastly fangs. A grotesque smile formed.
“She was used by the true owner of <De Vermis Mysteriis>.”
“What do you mean by that?”
To Chief Kim, who was reading the room, Chairman Kim spoke with an unpleasant smile.

“Look into the list of victims who were kidnapped at the ranch that day.”
Chairman Kim’s face bore no resemblance to that of a parent who’d lost a child.
“…And find me someone with a healthy body. Yes, a good-looking one would be preferable.”
All that welled up was the joy of finally being able to get his hands on what he wanted.
“Bring me a list of celebrity trainees as well.”

“…No, come to think of it, living as a woman might not be bad either. Or I could start a whole new life in a child’s body.”

At the joy of obtaining not some crude extension of lifespan but true immortality, drool seeped from Chairman Kim’s mouth.

In order to exert influence.
The one who donated the most to the Paranormal Response Bureau was Chairman Kim.

But naturally, he wasn’t the only patron.
A middle-aged man with a grave demeanor, his hair turned completely white despite his age.
Namgung Soo picked up an old family photo sitting on his desk, prompted by the intelligence he’d obtained from the Agency for Paranormal Response.
A photo from when Namgung Soo was young, when his little daughter was smiling….

A family photo from the days when his wife was still alive.
“……….”

He brought a trembling hand to the photo.
Searching for Magic that could reverse death… that could make it as though it had never happened.
He had gathered information not only from the Paranormal Response Bureau but from various other sources.
And at last, he’d found a lead.
A Grimoire that had appeared on Korean soil.
The Time Reversal Technique found in <De Vermis Mysteriis>.

…Of course he knew it was dangerous.
But still! Even if only for the briefest of moments, he wanted to go back to that time.
He wanted to bring back the wife who had died because of his choice.
And just then, his secretary spoke cautiously.
“Chairman, your daughter says she’s going to a church camp as a volunteer this time….”
“If she wants to go, she goes.”

Namgung Soo simply answered in brief.
His weary eyes still gazed at the past, at the days when they were happy.

A Wizard of British origin.
An old man draped in a black overcoat.
The wanted Necromancer, Edward Coffin, howled toward the sky.
W е̃bnо̄ v̆.ё l Е́ nŭ m̂ а́
“O <The Lesser Key of Solomon>! O <Lemegeton>!”
In an obsessive voice, he roared at the Grimoire that wouldn’t show him even the faintest trace.
“Why! Why won’t you come to me!”
How much Magic had he demonstrated until now?

Yet the <Lemegeton> never appeared, as if it couldn’t care less.
Edward, who had been looking up at the sky, lowered his head. And then.

“…I see. It seems mere corpses aren’t enough.”
Murmuring eerily, Edward’s eyes gleamed darkly.
“Ahhh….”
An army of the dead followed Edward, advancing toward the campground near the reservoir.
If it wasn’t enough, he would simply scale things up.
The pursuit from those flies at the Agency for Paranormal Response was growing fiercer, but it didn’t matter.

To the <Lemegeton>, to the great Grimoire.
“I am the one fit to wear Solomon’s crown. Look upon me, O Lemegeton.”
He would simply prove that he was the more worthy owner.

I’d done my Magic studies.

As punishment for hiding the utterly hopeless trio of Magics that were nothing special,
<De Vermis Mysteriis> had been left sitting on the desk with a sticky note reading [I am a lewd Grimoire] stuck to its black iron cover.

And I reviewed <The Lesser Key of Solomon> in order to make a Pentacle.
<p class=”font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]”>Just as when making a Pentacle from metal, one had to use the corresponding metal according to the planetary attribute,</p>
<p class=”font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]”>there was also something to be mindful of when making a Pentacle from Parchment or animal hide.</p>
<p class=”font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]”>Namely, the color used to draw the magic circle.</p>
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
The Moon was silver, Mars was red, Mercury was a mixed color, Jupiter was sky blue, Venus was green, Saturn was black, and the Sun was gold.
Using the color matching the attribute like so, one had to draw the magic circle on the Parchment.
However, whether it was metal or Parchment, simply engraving the magic circle didn’t mean the Pentacle was instantly complete.

Fumigation. One had to purify the Pentacle with smoke from a brazier while chanting an incantation for it to be finished.
“Let’s see… the materials you have to put in the brazier and burn at this time are?”
Charcoal, Aloe, Frankincense, and Mastic.
I blinked involuntarily.

…Mastic? What’s Mastic?
‘Help me, Google!’

A quick internet search gave me the answer right away. Thank god for living in the modern era.
Mastic, a natural resin from the mastic tree that grows on the island of Chios in Greece.
My eyes narrowed on their own.
My face was practically twisting into a grimace.
‘Stop using rare ingredients already!’
I wanted to scream that.

Would it kill them to show a little consideration for beginner Wizards?
‘…Where do they sell this? Can I get it delivered?’
I’d been worried since mastic trees only grew in Greece. But when I looked it up,
thankfully, mastic seemed to be a popular health supplement good for stomach health, produced in large enough quantities that it was available in Korea. The price was about the same as any other supplement too.
“…Frankincense is actually more expensive.”
Still, the fact that it was even for sale was a blessing. At least I had some money now.

After purchasing everything I needed from an online shopping mall and checking the time,
it was nearly time to meet with a client.

I put on the white coat hanging on the wall. And-.

I peeled off the sticky note that had been stuck on <De Vermis Mysteriis>.

I might tease it as a joke and give it a hard time about this and that,
but it was an incredible item, after all. I took good care of it.

Having met the female client who’d consulted about a Ghost appearing in her studio apartment, I was currently flustered, though I didn’t let it show on the outside.
W̌.е̃b́ n̂ӧ v̄_е̇_l Е̊nü m̈ а
‘…There’s nothing here?’
The female client, her face pale blue as if she might faint at any moment, pointed to a corner of the studio wall.
“Wh-whenever I go near that wall, it gets colder and I feel uneasy. …Is there something there?”
I examined the wall area.
‘…No, like I said, there’s nothing here.’
The client went on about other signs that there was a Ghost in the room, but

from what I could see, this was more like hypersensitivity from stress. Psychological anxiety.
She was creating a nonexistent Ghost out of her anxiety, convincing herself there was one in the room.
The stress and anxiety she was getting from this “Ghost” was real enough, but there was no actual Ghost in this place.
‘She probably needs a professional counselor, not an Exorcist….’
But even if I told her that, she wouldn’t listen.
She’d probably just think I was a fake Exorcist.
Е̄ ń ümа ..і d
I had no intention of trying to convince her or getting into an argument.
Well, being an Exorcist was technically a service industry at the end of the day.

“Could I take a look at the bathroom?”
“Huh? Sure! Is there something weird about the bathroom too? It does seem kind of humid!”
…Well, of course it’s humid. It’s a bathroom.
I went into the bathroom and quickly scoured the client’s social media.

And I discovered that a dog she’d raised for quite a long time had recently died.
A white-furred Maltese, female, named Poppy.
“Alright, let’s go with this.”
A sigh escaped me on its own as my gaze drifted to the side.

“Haah… what am I even doing.”
A moment later.

The female client was looking toward the wall she’d said felt ominous earlier, sniffling through her tears.
“Hic, ugh… hic! S-so you’re saying Poppy really… came to see me… and I didn’t even know… I-I’m sorry.”
I spoke gently, in the most empathetic tone I could manage.
“You don’t need to think that way. It’s nobody’s fault.”
“E-Exorcist nim… what is Poppy saying?”
‘Damn it… how would I know what a dog is saying?’

She didn’t even exist in the first place, at that.
Anyway, I’d come this far, so I couldn’t back out now. I said a bunch of nice things as best I could.
“…She says to make sure you eat properly. And to stop ordering delivery food so often.”
I glanced at the pile of delivery food wrappers tucked away in a corner of the room and continued.
“She says even if it’s a bit more effort, cook your own meals and eat balanced food, get some proper cardio, and keep a good sleep schedule. …Yes.”
“And she says she’s worried because she’s not by your side anymore. She wants you to find a good professional counseling center and try talking to someone there.”

The client wiped the tears from her eyes and said,
“P-Poppy can talk that well?”

I nodded, staring at the wallpaper pattern.
“Yes… she’s a very smart dog. You raised her well.”
Time to wrap this up. This was getting tiresome.
“Lastly, she says she’s really grateful you remember her, but she doesn’t like seeing you sad… and that she’s leaving now.”

The client sniffled as she gazed at the wall.
“Hic… Poppy, okay. …I’ll eat well, exercise, and definitely go to counseling. …Thank you.”
And with that, the request was concluded.
Another case closed! However….

“Um, about the fee?”
I let out an inward sigh.

“Forget it. It wasn’t a malicious spirit, and I didn’t really do anything. Just pay me a consultation fee.”
…I didn’t earn much, but still.
With a small consultation fee and a brunch cafe gift card she gave me, saying she was truly grateful, as my spoils of war,
I headed home, thinking.
Because I’d hit the jackpot with the Smith case,
…I’d gotten the wrong idea.

Was being a Ghostbuster actually not a very profitable profession?
And just then, the phone rang.
When I checked the number, it was Ellie, the peculiar nun I’d met at Smith’s mansion.
“Hello, this is Kim Yo-han.”
“Ah! Yo-han ssi! Hello!”
As soon as I answered, a warm and gentle voice rang out.

“It’s Ellie. Do you remember me?”
“Haha! Of course I do.”

I didn’t have any bad memories of this nun in particular, so I answered with the appropriate politeness.
“So what can I do for you?”
“It’s not a Ghostbuster request, actually… the thing is, we need a helper for a church camp.”
A bright voice echoed from beyond the phone.
Ėnum ǎ._і d̀
“Would you be able to help out? Oh! Of course, we’re not asking you to do it for free. You’d be properly paid!”
At the unexpected request, one of my eyebrows rose.
‘A church Camp Helper? Hmm?’
It wasn’t exactly appealing, but since they were offering pay, there was no reason to refuse.

Right, when work was slow, the thing to do was take whatever came along and make some money.
“Could you give me the schedule first?”
