Chapter 10: Quandary

TENSION hung thick over the confrontation between the two factions. A barren wasteland stretched out in every direction. A strong gust occasionally whipped up the sand, and not a soul could be seen with the naked eye. But the Botchling Takuto had brought with him had Detected several people hiding in plain sight. Though Takuto noticed their presence, he didn’t give any special instructions to the Botchling. He wanted to see how his opponent reacted first—such was Takuto’s personal policy.

After a long while, the space in front of Takuto distorted, and several people appeared. They had finally made up their mind to move forward with the interaction. Atou promptly shifted into a combat stance, but Takuto raised his left hand, staying her. He took a moment to observe his opponents.

“Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-You d-d-did well to a-a-answer my ch-ch-challenge, Takuto Ira!” shouted a young boy, his voice shrill. He stuttered, and his words came out as tremorous as the tremble in his bottom lip, giving away just how nervous he felt. One good look and Takuto saw his legs shaking so hard his knees were smacking together.

Impressed by how much courage his opponent had mustered just to show up, Takuto decided to do some light taunting first to see how the boy would react. “Is that you, Keiji boy…? You sure have shrunk since the last time I saw you. You made me feel awfully lonely when you didn’t respond at the conference. How have you been? Good?”

“Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!”

W̄ е b́ ǹȯ v е́ l̂ Е̂n ǔ m̀ а̂

A single remark was enough to overwhelm the boy, causing him to take an instinctive step back.

Hmm. Takuto analyzed his extreme reaction. He just confirmed he’s Keiji Kuhara with that. His voice is higher-pitched, but there’s enough similarity to what he sounded like when we spoke in Lenea.

Takuto shifted his gaze to the two ladies taking up positions to Keiji’s left and right. They were easy to recognize, especially since they still wore the same elaborate Saint attire. How considerate, he thought.

Seeing as Saint Soalina and Saint Fenne are both with him, it looks as though their partnership is still going strong.

He couldn’t see Fenne’s face through the veil, but Soalina was glaring daggers at him. She clearly hadn’t gotten over Erakino’s defeat at his hands.

Keiji’s letter of challenge was starting to feel less like a joke. The contents were written in an archaic style with sloppy penmanship, but Keiji was serious about the challenge.

E nŭ m̊ а̌

After such a spectacular defeat and their fleeing in different directions, I’d estimated the chances of them reuniting were low, but it seems Keiji has his own charm…

Perhaps a Player wouldn’t be chosen by a god unless they had something captivating about them, or perhaps Takuto’s own acceptance of Keiji as a worthy rival skewed his appraisal in a better light? Either way, the same truth stood before him: the TRPG faction had reunited.

But there was one among their ranks that screamed aberration: a girl who looked just like Erakino. Her different color scheme and hairstyle led one to believe she might be someone else, however.

Tabletop RPGS have character creator systems. Elemental Ward 4th Edition, the game Keiji brought to this world with him, also had character creation baked into its rulebook.

Baca cerita ini hanya di situs resmi Enuma.id!

Takuto couldn’t verify it based on visual information alone, but it was possible Keiji had created a new character. If he did, that’d be a huge pain. Takuto suppressed his desire to sigh.

“Are you Erakino?” Takuto asked. “…No, you can’t be. I killed that one. Another character, then? Did you create a new character sheet?”

Ё ǹ_ǔm̊ а̂ .і̆d̊

The girl tossed up both hands in a mocking manner and cocked her head to one side as if to say, “Wouldn’t you like to know?” Her bold, brazen manner resembled Erakino’s, but there was something different about her, too. She came across as someone who preferred to operate in the shadows more than Erakino ever did.

Either way, she’s not an ally, that’s for sure. Drawing conclusions without enough information leads to mistakes.

“This is why TRPGs are a pain to deal with. Unlike CRPGs and other types of board games, there’s a lot of room for interpretation baked in, allowing you to play fast and loose with the rules. Lucky you.”

Takuto was wary of TRPGs for this reason.

The game system for a tabletop RPG is typically discovered through its rulebook texts: the mechanics, numbers, rules, and procedures that players and Game Masters are instructed to use. The rulebook provides the potential game, but the real game happens in the interaction between the rules and the people playing. Through conversation. The degree of freedom and interpretation are on a completely different scale from those of other types of games. As long as everyone agrees, it’s possible to ignore or bend the rules laid out in the rulebook. Even from its earliest days, players understood that the rulebook is only one way to open the door.

In short, anything goes as long as everyone agrees, and it leads to the experience they want as a group. The main purpose of this type of game is for the group playing to have fun together without friction.

This high degree of interpretation presented by the TRPG system posed the greatest threat to the way their new world operated.

Takuto made his comment on TRPGs to remind his subordinates of the dangers they faced, so he was surprised when Erakino’s imposter of all people responded.

“Now here’s somebody who gets it! I mean, duh, you are the guy who handed this gambling trash his ass on a platter! Oh, by the way, call this aberration Echo, would ya? It’s the shattered remains of Erakino; just a happy-go-lucky specter spectator!”

Takuto desperately schooled his features before he accidentally let what he was thinking show on his face. Now that’s an awfully ambiguous origin story. She might’ve been ordered to hide her information, but I doubt it. Someone like Keiji isn’t the type to think ahead.

TRPGs have a relatively easy way of adding new characters to the campaign through character sheets. But even if that were an integral part of his game’s mechanics, the other game systems would be at a complete disadvantage if Keiji could just add new characters to his faction whenever he felt like it. No matter how he analyzed the situation, Takuto just didn’t think that was the case here, especially considering the subtle changes in Keiji’s attitude.

There was more to the situation than meets the eye. He could be bluffing, but he never came across as the sort to resort to such roundabout methods. At least based on Takuto’s impression of Keiji so far…

Еn̊ũmа . i d̃

So, she’s an exception to the rules? Is she the original Erakino? People who act the part of the fool like Vittorio are frightening because they often pull the carpet from under you when you least expect it… Takuto noted Echo as someone he needed to be especially vigilant of.

In any event, his original plan for the encounter remained unchanged. Due to the ongoing effects of the Great Ritual, Mynoghra couldn’t engage in interfaction combat. He was still on track to use dialogue to recruit the TRPG forces.

“Keiji. This time I’m considering forming an alliance with you rather than engaging in hostilities,” Takuto said.

“What alliance?” Keiji raised an eyebrow.

The two Saints flinched but said nothing. All decision-making power had been left to Keiji this time, it seemed.

Takuto was grateful they weren’t going to needlessly muddy the waters. He was afraid they would interject, and the ensuing chaos would get them off topic, so this was a welcome deviation.

Ẃ е̌b n о̌ vê l En̆ ũ.m а̄

“Regarding the Succubus situation. I’m sure you’re aware that we are now officially at odds with the Lawful Continent Alliance, since you were there at the All-Faction Conference, Keiji. We’ll eventually come to blows with them, so the more people we have on our side, the better,” Takuto asserted, forcing himself to speak with more passion than usual.

In reality, it was Takuto’s 4x faction and Yu’s RPG faction that were now at war with the Lawful Continent Alliance. Keiji’s TRPG faction wasn’t a party to either side, so they were more or less left out of the initial hostilities. The conversation would derail if he pointed that out, so Takuto quickly pushed past it. Of course, the TRPG faction couldn’t remain bystanders forever. The Lawful Continent Alliance would eventually come for them, too—it was only a matter of time.

Yield or team up. Confront the enemy head-on or run to the ends of the earth. Those were the only options. They needed to decide sooner rather than later. They would preferably choose to become Takuto’s ally.

“Why don’t we set aside our grudges for the moment and team up? The Succubus Army is making life difficult for all of us. You of all people should know that we’ve come to a crossroads, Keiji.”

A conflicted look clouded Keiji’s young face. He was considering Takuto’s offer. He looked torn, as if unsure which path to take. Takuto saw that moment of hesitation and seized it.

“Or would you rather offer your Saints to the Succubus?” he challenged, delivering a decisive blow.

W е̄b́n̂ǒ v е̃ l̆ _Е nu mӑ

A dramatic change overcame Keiji. But not the one Takuto had expected. Gleaming eyes, blazing with newfound resolution, pierced him. It wasn’t righteous fury blazing within, but the eyes of a man who had made up his mind.

I screwed up. He’s shaking like a leaf, so I thought they’d dragged him here against his will, but it seems he chose to come of his own volition, even if he’s still a coward at his core…

Keiji looked over his shoulder to confirm something. His gaze flicked between his companions—two Saints and an Echo—for confirmation.

Takuto’s back was unguarded, but he merely watched the scene unfold, unbothered. He couldn’t be harmed with the Great Ritual in place, and even if they defied those rules, his pride wouldn’t let him react any other way.

“You say it. You’re our leader~♪,” Echo encouraged.

“Be a man,” Fenne told him.

“Do your best, Mr. Keiji,” Soalina said.

Following a dismissive, almost encouraging, response from his companions, Keiji faced Takuto.

Takuto and his retinue watched and waited.

“Don’t think you can trick me with pretty words, Takuto Ira! I won’t fall for it! I’ll d-defeat you! Become the top dog! And then I’ll win this war and revive Erakino!”

“I’m pretty sure you can revive Erakino without having to defeat me…”

“O-Oh, okay…”

Takuto was starting to understand what Keiji was after. Rather than exacting revenge, he wanted to regain the dignity he lost during their last confrontation.

Various methods for reviving the dead existed in this world. Many were extremely complicated, but not impossible. Which was probably why the idea of settling things with Takuto became one of Keiji’s goals.

He wanted closure, not revenge.

Such things are appealing to video game players, but this was the real world for them. Takuto wanted him to focus on the problem at hand, rather than being swayed by sentimentality and petty discord.

The immediate problem was dealing with the Lawful Continent Alliance.

“B-But Fenne…”

“Why are you asking me? Man up.”

Keiji was wavering. Takuto knew he was on the right track. The two Saints seemed intent on letting Keiji decide their fate. Takuto didn’t know what had gotten into them, but it certainly worked in his favor.

Now’s the time to go all in. Takuto kept his desire to grin to himself as he welcomed the strange atmosphere that had fallen over their two factions despite being here to have a final showdown.

“Keiji, the truth is, I also have someone I want to revive, and I’ve laid the groundwork for that. If you cooperate, I’ll help you revive Erakino in return. This is the biggest concession I’m willing to make as the party who was attacked first by your faction.”

If that’s all it took to seal the deal, then great. A so-called clincher. TRPGs use words to play. If Takuto could recruit him through persuasion, then that could be considered a very TRPG-appropriate encounter. Maximum effect with minimum effort.

Besides, they were going to have plenty of annoying interactions later on to reconcile information and build a minimally cooperative relationship anyway. Takuto wanted the first step toward that to be as easy as possible. He really just wanted to get this over with, and although he had complicated feelings when it came to Keiji, he didn’t harbor any particularly strong hatred or animosity toward him.

Е̌ ňum а̂

Whatever the TRPG faction’s thoughts on the matter, Takuto was serious about recruiting Keiji. At the same time…

Yeah, I know it’s not going to be that easy. Never is.

…A part of him knew his attempts at using persuasion had failed.

“No,” Keiji said firmly. “If I let myself get swept up in the moment and join your side here, I’m done for. I’ll revert right back to my old self—a weakling who couldn’t make a decision to save his life. I decided I would settle things with you here and now. And so I will settle things with you!”

I knew it’d come to this… Takuto wasn’t surprised by Keiji’s response. Sure, the manchild was as spineless as ever, his indecisiveness glaringly obvious to the point he was liable to seek advice from his allies at any moment now. Yet, perhaps his defeat had fostered some growth within him. Takuto could sense that he now possessed a certain inner strength, something akin to a steadfast pillar running through his being.

A strong, massive pillar—one that would never break, never yield.

I need to consider the possibility our talks might fall through… Takuto bit the inside of his cheek.

Betraying absolutely no sign of his frustration, Takuto succinctly stated the facts. “I’m afraid I have some bad news on that front. I currently have a Great Ritual active. It cast a massive barrier over the Dark Continent to protect Mynoghra from the Lawful Continent Alliance. This barrier halts any hostile actions between involved parties while active.”

Any kind of duel or battle between them was impossible from the start. Whether they mutually consented to fight or not, the effects of the Great Ritual would obstruct any attempt. Some exceptions existed, such as neutral NPCs, but Keiji and his cohort belonged to the TRPG faction, which encompassed them within the effects of the ritual.

Simply put, no matter how much they whined about it, they couldn’t settle things now.

“That cannot be—”

“Is that why I can’t read anyone’s mind?”

W̌ ёbno̊vе l̈ Е ñ ům̈а̊

Only now did the Saints mutter their concern.

Reading minds was the Miracle bestowed upon Saint Fenne by her holy god. Takuto had learned of her ability while he was infiltrating the Divine Nation of Lenea. Naturally, the act of reading someone’s mind against their will counted as hostile action. There was no reason for her alone to be exempt from the restrictions put in place by the ritual.

“Oooh, that’s awesome! But! I’m awesomer!” Keiji worked himself into a frenzy, letting out a shout that bordered on pure bravado. Though, if anything, it sounded more like a rabbit trying to roar at a lion… His lack of understanding was painfully apparent.

Sighing inwardly at the fact that he hadn’t gotten the situation across to him, Takuto took the time to offer a patient, detailed explanation to Keiji. “No, it has nothing to do with being awesome, Keiji. A duel also counts as hostile action. We can’t attack each other. Period.”

“May I try?”

“Be my guest.”

Ĕ ṅû m а́. ĩd

Fenne was the first to respond to Takuto’s clarification. It seemed the Saint had finally lost her patience, deciding that Keiji was simply too unreliable to handle the situation.

For his part, Takuto was eager to bring a swift conclusion to this conversation, which was beginning to drag on in a rather aimless fashion, so he readily gave his consent. After all, the Great Ritual had repelled even the Succubus Army’s overpowered onslaught. There was simply no chance a mere Saint could overwhelm it.

“I won’t hold back then.”

A powerful shockwave exploded before their eyes. Takuto flinched slightly at the loud sound, but that was the extent of it.

“You wench!” Atou cursed, furious at the sudden attack.

It was actually more problematic trying to telepathically rein her in.

“Do you understand now?”

“Yes, I do. A terrifying ability, indeed.”

Fenne appeared satisfied, and just like that, the full import of what Takuto was trying to convey finally sank in for the opposing side. No matter how much Takuto might have tried to explain it, Keiji wouldn’t have understood. However, he was bound to believe it if Fenne said so. At least, that was Takuto’s hope and Fenne’s intent with their little demonstration.

“So, what are you going to do, Keiji?” Fenne asked. “At this rate, a war of words is the absolute most you can hope for. Unfortunately, when it comes to verbal sparring, you don’t stand even a one-in-ten-thousand chance of winning. Or rather, you’ve already suffered crushing defeat.”

“D-Don’t listen to her, Mr. Keiji!”

“U-Uh…yeah, what should we do now?”

Keiji was at a complete and total loss. He had come all this way with a singular focus: to settle the score with Takuto Ira. Even if he had anticipated that Takuto might employ some trickery to try to avoid a fight, he couldn’t have foreseen the possibility that engaging in combat would be rendered utterly impossible from the outset.

A palpable sense of dismay radiated from the two Saints as well.

This is it, Takuto thought. He jumped on the opportunity to strike with a persuasive rush of words.

“So, now that that’s settled, why don’t you temporarily join forces with us? I know we have much to discuss, and given that we were once enemies, I admit we probably won’t be friends any time soon. But we can still shake hands while keeping a dagger hidden behind our backs. For the sake of your objectives and ours, we need to deal with the Lawful Continent Alliance first.”

Takuto gauged their reaction. Confusion reigned supreme. The fact that they hadn’t outright rejected the idea suggested they were already falling right into Takuto’s trap. For now, the plan was to steer the conversation toward shelving the conflict; after that, he could absorb their forces piecemeal over time. The risk of being stabbed in the back would always linger, but now that their true objective—resurrecting Erakino—had been exposed, he figured he could handle anything they threw at him.

Or so he thought…

Echo chose that moment to break her silence. All eyes turned to her. She was grinning with absolute amusement and a hint of displeasure.

The impact of this modification on game balance isMINOR.

Takuto sharply inhaled.

“What the? That felt weird. What just happened?” Keiji asked.

An impossible interference with the rules was conveyed to Takuto through the Eternal Nations’ system. Takuto had experienced this feeling before—this supernatural presence that existed far beyond the scope of their collective understanding. Takuto grimaced. Of all the dire possibilities he had anticipated, the absolute worst-case scenario had just become reality.

Oh, give me a break. You’ve really gone and done it this time, Keiji!! Takuto cast a resentful glare at Keiji, who was glancing around with a dumbfounded look on his young face. Of course, the idiot didn’t even realize the hell his side had just unleashed and was peppering Echo with questions about it.

Ën̊ u m̂ а

“Just this once,” Echo sneered. “I’ve temporarily overwritten the settings to lift the combat restrictions. Sorry, but this little bug really wants to see Master show off for once. Sucks for you, but you’ll just have to play along!”

“Don’t do things I didn’t ask for,” Keiji chided the cackling Echo.

Takuto was in no mood to listen to their antics anymore. If Echo was to be believed, then the Great Ritual’s effects were already null and void. All attacks were back on the table again. And that same sense of impending crisis was shared by Takuto’s subordinates, who had remained silent observers until this very moment.

“King Takuto, let me join the fight…!” With a hint of panic in her voice, Atou declared her intent, simultaneously unfurling tentacles from her back.

Letting her join would be a grave mistake.

“No. I want you to stay back, Atou.”

Takuto could certainly allow Atou to join him in this fight, but doing so would undoubtedly draw additional enemies into the fray. The two Saints were hardly a threat since he’d already learned their tricks. However, it was impossible to predict how Echo would intervene when she’d declared her desire to see the two Players duel it out. Turning this into an all-out, chaotic brawl was the last thing Takuto wanted.

It wasn’t that he feared Echo.

Rather, as long as the unpredictable entity known as Echo remained a wild card, capable of pulling any stunt at any moment, there was no telling what the gods lurking behind this world might decide to do.

“Oh, and I know this is rich coming from me, but I’ll ask that you let me warm the bench this time. This aberration wants to remain as a spectator as much as possible. I swear I won’t interfere again! So, pretty please with a cherry on top?” Perhaps sensing the rising tension, Echo offered up a sheepish excuse.

Takuto seriously doubted there was any truth to her words, but he decided to play along to prevent the tension from escalating further. “Fine. I accept the duel. On one condition.”

He delivered a calculated countermove. After all, simply taking it on the chin without striking back was an affront to his pride.

Ёnu̇ m̈а́

“What? Duels can have conditions? Since when?”

“I want Echo to bow out. To be precise, I want her chip removed from the board entirely. Games are no fun when non-Players butt in to make a mess of things.”

“Wh-Why?! She’s got nothing to do with this!” Keiji objected in a flustered panic, but such feeble protests were hardly enough to sway Takuto.

“She’s got everything to do with it. She just intervened no less than a second ago. Besides, regardless of what I have to say, she is still your ally, is she not? Take responsibility for your people.”

“Urk,” Keiji grunted, then fell silent.

Takuto couldn’t back down now. Even if it meant souring the relationship between their two factions, he had to find a way to neutralize the threat posed by Echo. The moment she intervened, his priorities had shifted. The unexpected can happen at any time. But he never imagined it would come in such an unwelcome manner today.

Ŵ ëb̊ n̄о̊ ve ĺ Ë n̊ ü m а

Even now, he could sense Saint Fenne’s probing presence reaching out, attempting to delve into his mind. She would’ve learned everything if not for Ira’s God Authority, he realized with grave dismay and cursed the TRPG faction for always breaking the rules to screw with him and his preciously laid out plans. They really, truly are the most obnoxious faction, he felt with his whole being.

“Hey now, all this bug did was lift the restrictions. You sure came up with some flimsy excuse just to drive up the stakes on our side. Somebody getting cold feet about this duel? Are you chicken~?” Echo taunted.

“If you are going to intervene in others’ fights, then you’d better be prepared to be pulled into the fight yourself. It’s as simple as that.”

The smirk vanished from Echo’s face, even though she was the one who’d been provoking him. Apparently, this turn of events wasn’t exactly to her liking, either.

“It’s a tale as old as time. Rarely in history has the phrase ‘just this once’ actually meant just this once. So, consider this a polite invitation for the guardians to take their seats in the spectator stands or be banned from the field altogether.”

Takuto presented her with an ultimatum—one he was certain Echo would understand. He didn’t know how Keiji would interpret it, but as far as Takuto was concerned, he’d had enough of Echo’s meddling. If nothing else, he’d made his intentions clear. He said his piece and fell silent, waiting for his opponent’s next move.

Е́ n u m̈ а́

The ball had been thrown into the TRPG faction’s court—to Keiji Kuhara.

Someone clicked their tongue in annoyance. Was it Echo? Or Keiji? Either way, a decision was made.

“No,” Keiji said. “Echo is my ally. She’s a pain in the ass, always mockin’ me and beatin’ the crap outta me when I mistake her for Erakino. I mean, hell, I don’t even know who or what she is, but…regardless, she’s on my team.”

Takuto didn’t like where this was going. He immediately shifted gears from negotiation to combat.

The atmosphere palpably shifted. Some of those present couldn’t hide their unease as the tension escalated at an alarming pace.

“Are you seriously taking on a fight thinking you’re going to lose? Isn’t this where you declare you’re going to beat me?”

“Don’t be an idiot. What I’m saying is that my allies aren’t trophies to bet with.”

Aaah, and here it is, the worst-case scenario in full force. Keiji Kuhara has steeled his idiotic resolve. This sucks. It really is the worst of the worst.

The Player whom Takuto had been wary of, the leading figure of the very faction he dreaded facing, had steeled his resolve in the truest sense of the word. The time for using clever words to obfuscate and mislead his opponent was over. From this point on, nothing would stop—could stop—this conflict until a definitive conclusion was reached.

Echo cackled. She cackled with an expression of sheer delight, joy, and profound satisfaction.

“You’re pretty good yourself, but you still fall short compared to this guy, Takuto Ira. Keiji Kuhara is the best Player. In fact…I’d go so far as to call him the number one Player in the world!”

Takuto understood perfectly well that Echo’s words were a deliberate provocation. Yet, even so, he found himself unable to suppress the surge of emotion rising within him.

Е́ n̊ ũ m̌ а́

“It is what it is: a matter of shifting priorities. Just don’t hold a grudge against me if you end up dead, Keiji boy.”

The rational side of Takuto noted that it’d been a long time since he felt this irritated. Even he wasn’t entirely sure what the source of that seething irritation was. For now, his sole focus lay on the battle ahead.

Takuto took a single step forward. As he did so, he shifted his own self-perception ever so slightly—away from Takuto Ira and toward God Ira.

With a viscous, slithering motion, an aura of hideous darkness and power surged forth from Takuto, coalescing into a dense, perceivable shadow.
