Chapter 12: Treasure Ship
“WE would be greatly humbled if you would come to accept another tribute from us.” This offer arrived from the Maritime Nation of Sutharland just as the Dark Continent Alliance was taking shape, and its various members were forging ahead with full force in their respective tasks.
Takuto, and by extension, Mynoghra, was the acting leader of the DCA as they prepared for the intercontinental war looming just around the corner. It was entirely within the realm of expectation that Sutharland, eager to elevate its standing within this hastily assembled alliance, would make grand overtures and attempt to curry favor at the last second.
They want me to go to their domain to accept it personally, eh?
Requesting Takuto to come to them introduced a whole slew of problems. The most problematic of which was that it called into question Takuto’s authority and served as a power play between their two nations.
Although Sutharland possessed a respectable degree of national power on the Dark Continent, at the end of the day, it was merely a single nation within the alliance. For such a nation to summon the King of Mynoghra and the leader of the DCA so casually did not look good. Regardless of how the matter was framed, outsiders would see it as an inferior member of the alliance pushing the leader around. The Sutharland Dwarves appeared fully aware of the impropriety involved in their request, for their written proposal was couched in language of the utmost humility and deference.
Е.n̄ ú mа́
They must believe it’s worth the trouble, then.
The Sutharland Dwarves possessed an extraordinary amount of confidence in this tribute of theirs. Mynoghra had already received an Armored Dragon as tribute from Sutharland, making this latest offer somewhat superfluous.

Then again, Takuto had deemed the Armored Dragon to be of middling combat utility and ordered it to be returned to Sutharland to serve as breeding stock. Consequently, the Sutharland Dwarves likely felt the need to redeem themselves.
What to do? I am quite curious to see what they have in store for me this time…
While the text of their missive was permeated with an exhausting degree of deference, the paragraphs describing the tribute itself positively overflowed with confidence and pride. The self-laudatory rhetoric, expressed in an unnecessarily convoluted style, suggested that they would never have spoken in such terms unless the tribute in question was truly something extraordinary.
And all this pomp and fanfare for a gift they intended for Mynoghra.

Screw it! I’m sending my double! I can worry about what others think later. I’ve got enough time to see what all the fuss is about.
Mynoghra’s Botchlings could act as body doubles by utilizing a combination of remote commands and their Mimic ability. By making use of his subordinates in this way, Takuto could pay a “visit” to other nations fairly safely. While operating a body double required intense concentration and thus demanded that his real body be under strict protection, it remained an efficient method that saved considerable travel time.
Heck, I just want to see this tribute for myself.
Takuto decided to accept their offer, though mostly for personal reasons. He knew his decision would involve persuading the Dark Elves and Atou. Doing this might even expose an unnecessary vulnerability to the TRPG faction, who were currently swamped with mountains of paperwork and mind-numbing meetings in Dragontan.

Even with the potential risks and annoyances, Takuto couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something akin to destiny woven into this offer.

“WELCOME! And thank you for coming, our great and mighty alliance leader, King Takuto! Come, come! I’ve prepared a seat for ya right here. It’s the prime spot in my estate, offering a panoramic ocean view!”
“Hrm. Rooftop seating? While the view is impressive, it’s not exactly ideal from a security standpoint…”
At that snide remark from Tonukapoli, Fleet Admiral Doban twisted his craggy, rock-hard face into a grimace. Tonukapoli had accompanied Takuto despite Phon’kaven not having any direct involvement in this matter. However, when a tribute of such magnitude, one capable of swaying the King of Ruin himself, was being exchanged within the Dark Continent Alliance, they could hardly afford not to send an envoy to gather intelligence.
Moreover, Phon’kaven would serve as a vital buffer should relations between the two nations take an unexpected turn for the worse. It was from this strategic perspective that Tonukapoli, a Staff Holder, had been dispatched to attend.
She cast a glance in Takuto’s direction, silently asking what he wanted to do. Even with the Great Ritual in place, they couldn’t entirely rule out the possibility of an ambush. And then there was the greater problem of potential spies in their ranks. She voiced her objection to the rooftop seats with these concerns in mind. Now she awaited Takuto’s decision.
Takuto, however, was of a different mind on the matter. He was going all-in on seeing what Sutharland had for him.

“Now, now. I’m happy with this spot…”
“I have no further complaints if you’re content, King Takuto. Forgive my meddling, Fleet Admiral.”
“Bah! It’s water under the bridge, dear Tonukapoli!”
The conversation proceeded with no hurt feelings. They were all mature leaders who understood that taking offense at every little thing accomplished nothing. They were veterans in the art of negotiation, not some greenhorn merchants who were too big for their britches.
Of course, neither Sutharland nor Phon’kaven knew they were actually in the presence of Takuto’s body double, while their alliance leader partook remotely from the safety of the Accursed Lands. Takuto wasn’t so naïve as to reveal his hand to allies—temporary or otherwise. Always taking safety precautions was a must in this world.
I’m so swamped preparing for war right now, I couldn’t have made the journey without using a body double…
Ӗn ù ma
Takuto had successfully cleared the first stage of his grand strategy: uniting every nation on the Dark Continent under Mynoghra’s banner. Allocating a provisional chain of command among the various nations was the second stage of the DCA strategy. This was being done in conjunction with the third stage, which involved building up arms and formulating joint tactics for the impending war.
In short, everyone was stretched to their absolute limit.

Piled atop all of that was the monumental task of building a somewhat cooperative relationship with the TRPG faction, verifying Keiji’s abilities, and briefing the returning RPG faction members on decisions made during their absence. The situation was so overwhelmingly demanding that Takuto wished he could clone himself to do it all.
Takuto never could have imagined how much groundwork, interpersonal skills, and human interaction were required for an alliance. Yet he somehow managed to field the deluge of greetings pouring in from his ever-expanding network of associates, all while vividly hallucinating the image of his inner, socially anxious self weeping inconsolably in a dark corner.
“Before we begin, Sutharland wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude for the support you have extended to us in so many ways since the signing of our alliance, King Takuto. In particular, yer assistance in matters of agricultural reform and timber exports touch deeply upon the very survival of our people. I doubt any other nation on this continent could possibly offer aid on such a scale!”
To foster friendship between their nations and secure a firm hold on Sutharland, Takuto provided several forms of support to his new ally. The first of which was agricultural reform. The efficacy of Terrain Enhancements using the Dragon Vein’s Earth Mana had already been proven in Phon’kaven. It just so happened that Phon’kaven’s fertilization process had reached a natural stopping point, leaving many of the Spirits of Ruin dispatched to the region with little to do. Redirecting those idling units to support Sutharland next was a highly cost-effective tactic.
Е n.u mа.
Even a maritime nation like Sutharland still engaged in agriculture. Their staple foods, such as bread and ale, were produced from wheat. Any increase in harvest yields was welcomed with open arms.
In that regard, the export of timber proved no less significant; it was nothing short of a godsend for them. Their ships required a staggering amount of timber to build and maintain. While such raw materials were notoriously difficult to procure within the desolate lands of the Dark Continent, the Accursed Lands were an exception. Trees grew there in such abundance that they went to waste, and Mynoghra had Reforest unlocked—a magic capable of accelerating tree growth to incredible speeds.
It was little wonder that the Sutharland Dwarves, who’d initially entered the alliance driven more by fear and survival instinct than anything else, had done a complete about-face. Now they sang Mynoghra’s praise. It seemed a perfectly natural conclusion that Doban would go out of his way to address Takuto as their Supreme Leader.
Takuto nodded back with an air of magnanimity. In most instances, this gesture alone would suffice to conclude the matter. There was no need for Takuto to offer any verbal response, nor did they expect one. All that was required was to maintain the stance of listening to what they had to say.

And thus began the second official meeting between Mynoghra and Sutharland, arriving not too long after the first.
Representing Mynoghra were (Botchling) Takuto and Elder Moltar, who had managed to carve out the time through sheer force of will.
Ě nu m̀ а
Representing Sutharland was Fleet Admiral Doban and several Commodores.
And Tonukapoli sat in as an observer on behalf of Phon’kaven.
Since this meeting was strictly unofficial and clandestine, it gave off a rather intimate, small-scale impression. The truth was simply that everyone was too busy to make this into a big affair. The Mynoghra delegation even intended to make a hasty return home immediately after the meeting concluded. Although they had received invitations to a banquet and other festivities from the Sutharland side, they had politely but firmly declined.
“I apologize for the urgency, but we are all too busy to dally. I request we skip the pleasantries and proceed as quickly as possible,” Elder Moltar interjected, cutting to the chase with uncharacteristic bluntness.
Such behavior during international talks would normally warrant a stern warning, but Mynoghra was the larger power, and both nations had their hands full. Both sides shared the desire to get this over with as quickly as possible and realized the comment had more to do with that than political maneuvering.
“Hear, hear! I’m with ya on that… truly, I am…”

Elder Moltar and the Mynoghra delegate as a whole found Admiral Doban’s word choice strange. What was there for Sutharland to hesitate over? Didn’t both sides want this to be done and over with pronto? Sutharland had no reason to drag things out, nor did it seem likely that they were laying a trap or trying to use this occasion to wheedle more out of Mynoghra. Even Elder Moltar, a seasoned veteran and shrewd operator when it came to negotiations, found Fleet Admiral Doban’s reaction baffling.
“Is something the matter? You sound troubled…” Elder Moltar ventured, offering the Dwarf a lifeline. Or rather, he realized the conversation would stagnate if he didn’t prod it along.
Doban merely grimaced. One might even go so far as to say he looked as if he were enduring some form of physical agony.
“Let moi guess! You need to dump a lump off the bow, but don’t know how!”
Everyone turned to look at Vittorio.
What in the world is he doing here? Everyone from Mynoghra, Takuto included, shared this singular thought.
W̄ e b̌ńо̃vе̌ l Ẽṅŭ m̂а̂
The Dwarves shared a similar thought, along the lines of, “Who the hell is this?!”
In any case, everyone agreed that he wasn’t supposed to be there.

“You seem troubled, or like something is weighing heavily on you, Doban. Tell us. Nothing can begin until you do.”
And so, when Tonukapoli spoke up as if Vittorio wasn’t there, not a soul thought to question it. Mynoghra knew full well that this was the correct course of action. And the Sutharland Dwarves decided that if Mynoghra was going to let the weirdo slide, they might as well do the same.
“I was thinking ’bout the deep blue sea. The deep blue we used to sail ’cross together…” Doban murmured, his voice barely a whisper.
From there, the dam burst, and the words came out unbidden. As if the anguish that had plagued him just moments before had vanished into thin air, the stalwart man of the sea suddenly became garrulous, speaking with uncontainable fervor.
W е̂ b̈ńо̊ v е̃l Ên ům̆ а
“We put on a shameful display the last time. We prided ourselves on the belief that Sutharland stood a ship deck ’bove the other Dark Continent nations, but when the chips went down, we found out that wasn’t the case. Even if we couldn’t best Mynoghra, I’d hoped we could show more of what we’re made of…”
Dwarves are a proud and noble race. Or perhaps, describing them as stubborn was more accurate. Regardless, they tend to place immense value on appearances and saving face.
Their ultimate trump card, the Armored Dragon, unleashed as a desperate, all-or-nothing gambit, had surrendered like a whimpering pup. The shock of that defeat was staggering. Even for the stout-hearted Dwarves, the humiliation was so profound that they felt they could scarcely show their faces in public ever again.
And no one felt that sting more acutely than the Fleet Admiral himself. He was the de facto leader of Sutharland. The weight of all responsibility rested squarely upon his shoulders.

“But, Admiral, your nation’s dragons are priceless. They will surely prove their worth if you succeed in breeding them. And rest assured, from the forbidden texts to the technologies you so graciously shared with us, Mynoghra has never once taken your sincerity for granted. We are simply far superior is all. There’s nothing more to it…”
“Wowie, talk about adding fuel to the fire,” Vittorio quipped at Elder Moltar.
E̊ n̈ú m̊ ӓ . i̊ d̂
The Dwarves had to bite their tongues in frustration. The gleefully grinning jester was right: they hadn’t taken the sage’s words well. For Elder Moltar’s part, it had been an earnest attempt at consolation—a statement carefully phrased to respect their lesser standing. Yet there was no denying that it came across as condescending.
Doban’s face twisted with anger. Anger born of having his Dwarven pride wounded. Yet his anger wasn’t directed at Mynoghra, but toward himself and his people for their inadequacy. That was precisely why Doban had worn such a look of bitter anguish, and why he’d chosen this tribute as the means to reclaim Sutharland’s pride.
“We lacked the resolve, ya know. The resolve to board this ship. The resolve to cast our lot in with the Supreme Leader and set sail together on the seas of fate. Or maybe we were just tryin’ to haggle a better deal. Heh-heh-heh! Seems I’m makin’ the poor judgments of a sailor who’s still getting’ used to his sea legs rather than thinkin’ like a captain, much less a fleet admiral. But it’s never too late to redirect your course and steer things straight…”
At those words from their admiral, the Commodores broke their anxious, solemn silence to interject for the first time.
“Ya sure ’bout this, Admiral?”
“We feel ya, but I don’t know ’bout this…”

“Doban. That’s the diamond of yer fleet—of our nation!”
They made the tribute sound like an extraordinary treasure. Yet no matter how much value it may hold to them, there was no guarantee the same applied to Mynoghra. Nevertheless, they valued this treasure. Even though they were fully aware of the overwhelming disparity between Mynoghra and Sutharland, a gulf so vast that even dragons could not bridge it, they never once wavered in their belief of its worth.
Their attitude piqued Takuto’s curiosity. He cast a single glance at Elder Moltar.
“…Pardon the interruption, but what exactly is this treasure of yours?” the old sage asked, correctly interpreting his king’s signal. “You have piqued His Majesty’s interest.”
“Well met, Supreme Leader! Behold Sutharland’s pride and joy!”
The treasure that would prove Sutharland’s worth—not only to Mynoghra, but to the entire DCA was about to be unveiled.

The Fleet Admiral strode to the railing of the rooftop deck and bellowed a prearranged signal at the top of his lungs.
“Set the Merulian’s sails!!!”

No one in Mynoghra could have anticipated what they were about to see. Emerging from the vast expanse of ocean visible from the rooftop, a single ship appeared. A single ship on an entirely different caliber from all others.
Sailing toward them from across the deep blue was a massive, stunning white warship. The design could only have been the work of another country or, mayhap, an entirely different entity from Humanoids.
Takuto understood at once how the Dwarves had acquired the ability to traverse the vast ocean to another landmass from a continent where seafaring technology remained rudimentary. He understood why, despite having abandoned their ancestral lands and mines, they still managed to maintain such a formidable nation.
And more than anything else, he understood the sheer magnitude of resolve the Sutharland Dwarves must have mustered to reveal this ship to him.
Е n̈ ü m̃.а̄ .і d
“Hidden in plain sight with Disguise… No, that was Invisibility. But more importantlyyyy, is that what moi thinks it is?” Vittorio wondered with surprise, voicing Mynoghra’s sentiments perfectly.
Mynoghra had brought a Botchling of the Stalking variety with them to this meeting. Possessing the Detect skill, it could see through illusions and disguises, allowing it to react instantly should its master face any peril. While the unit was restricted from taking any overt action during the meeting, it certainly should’ve been able to issue a warning to Takuto.
But Mynoghra’s prized Botchling didn’t react.
This could only mean one thing: the ship had a form of Disguise not even the Botchling’s Detect skill could see through. It had to be hidden by a high-level skill then.

Another Regalia…
A colossal, gleaming white galleon. The flagship of the Sutharland fleet: the Treasure Ship Merulian.
Ê n̆ ûm̄ а
Still, for it to appear at this exact moment…almost feels intentional.
It was no wonder Vittorio was surprised. Not even Takuto could have predicted this. He was constantly on guard against the possibility that their enemies might surpass them. He tried never to show weakness, always preparing for the worst. Yet, he had never imagined that such a staggering secret existed within Sutharland—a place he’d viewed merely as a preparatory staging ground for their war against the Lawful Continent Alliance.
Silence washed over them.
Everyone, including the Dwarves, stood gazing in quiet awe at the colossal white ship bobbing upon the sea.
Fleet Commander Doban began to speak slowly, savoring every single word as if weighing its very essence. “That ship embodies our very spirit. A great many men shed their blood and tears for her. A number of good men died for her. Many more became too injured to ever sail again. Every last one of ’em was captivated by her, and together with her, we built a massive trade empire… She’s a damn fine ship. So fine, she deserves better than to serve the likes of me and mine.”
“I can tell. She’s a magnificent ship. There is truly nothing else like her in the world. She’s something you have every right to take pride in.”

Takuto spoke for the first time since the meeting started. Until this point, he’d only nodded and signaled his subordinates to speak for him. He’d finally addressed the Dwarves himself to offer praise. He affirmed their pride and joy’s worth, affirmed that she was indeed a treasure of immense value. Worth the trip.
The king wasn’t a man of many words, so when he praised the Merulian in such a way, everyone knew then and there that the Dwarves had reclaimed their pride and place.
“Supreme Leader, we entrust our flagship to you,” Doban said, keeping his words short and sweet.
The Commodores said nothing. They understood the weight of the Fleet Admiral’s words better than anyone. They understood the weight of his decision and what he must be feeling in offering his flagship.
As things stood, regardless of how the fate of the world was ultimately decided, the future for the Sutharland Dwarves remained bleak. Even if Mynoghra’s alliance emerged victorious, Sutharland’s position would remain painfully weak.
The Dwarves had triumphantly presented their dragons to little fanfare. Their golden ticket was a joke. To erase such a humiliating line from the annals of history, to fulfill their destiny as proud men of the sea, they put their greatest treasure on the line.
Е̃ǹů m̌ а̌ . і̃ d́
The Great War just on the horizon was not Mynoghra’s fight alone. The fight would come to Doban and the Sutharland Dwarves. They couldn’t afford to be cowards. To be inferior.
We will not run with our tails between our legs a second time.

Such was the resolve of the descendants of those Dwarves who, in a bygone era, had abandoned their homeland and fled to the very edges of the Dark Continent. This was the collective will of the Sutharland Commodores led by Fleet Admiral Doban.
Their resolve resonated with Takuto. It was powerful enough to overturn the assessment he had previously passed upon Sutharland—the judgment that they were a people easily bent to his will.
I’m completely floored that this is what they had prepared. I’ll need to rethink how I treat them going forward…
Takuto was gathering Regalia at a rapid pace. Almost as if it were all a part of some grand design.
Wê b̆ n̆ о̌ v̂ еĺ. Ĕn um а́
No way was Takuto going to let go of the Regalia Ship when it was legitimately transferred to him as a gift. That meant he was going to have to keep looking after Sutharland’s interests well after the upcoming war, but he’d already walked that road with Phon’kaven. A small price to pay for a Regalia.
The bigger question was what to do with them once Mynoghra had achieved the Ascension Victory, but Takuto already had a handful of solutions in mind. They had more than proven their worth. To simply cast them aside like yesterday’s trash once they’d served their purpose would be a stain upon Takuto’s pride.
“Your ship’s a Regalia: an item of great importance to my nation. I hope you are aware that, unlike the dragon, I won’t be giving this back. Ever.”
Takuto sought final confirmation. This was their last out, a binding contract.

“Dwarves never go back on their word. I might grumble ’bout it over a drink or two, though!” Doban bellowed, infusing humor to shake off the last of his regrets. This wasn’t really the appropriate time for jokes, but no one missed the misty glimmer in his eyes.
Not a soul could fault him. They understood the significance of a gruff and proud man of the sea being brought to tears.
Еn ü ṁа̇ .і́d̈
Savoring the weight of the Fleet Admiral’s words, Takuto gave a clear and firm nod that no one could miss. “Very well. I’ve duly accepted the heart and soul of your nation. And I give you my word: I will absolutely reciprocate with something of equal or greater value. I swear this in the name of the King of Ruin, Takuto Ira.”
“Aye, aye. We’re sailin’ to yer winds now, Supreme Leader! Our mighty and steadfast King of Ruin!”

THE rest of the meeting was a lost cause.

Fleet Admiral Doban wailed openly, and swept up in emotion, the Commodores wept with him. Producing ale from only-the-Dwarves-know-where, they launched into a banquet that practically screamed farewell party, and now they were swapping stories of their fondest memories aboard the Merulian.
Perhaps the one saving grace was that the Mynoghra delegate was left completely out of the loop. Takuto was seriously grateful for that, since getting roped into their rowdy partying would’ve been nothing short of a nightmare for him. After all, he currently reigned as the king of an evil empire, a position where he answered to no one! Being conscripted into a spontaneous drinking party at this point in his life was unacceptable!
Leaning against the rooftop railing, Takuto gazed out at sea. He set his sights on the Merulian, bobbing on the gentle waves, and began to assess her abilities. She boasted substantial cargo capacity and impressive speed as a Regalia. With the unexpected emergence of this new class of military asset, various strategies that he’d previously deemed impossible suddenly began to take on an air of reality.
“But a ship, huh? Oh, the possibilities…”
“Oh, mon dieu, could it be? Were we thinking the exact same thingy? Mm-mm-mmmm! Now that’s love!” Vittorio chimed in with a playful quip, magically appearing at Takuto’s side.
It was patently obvious that he was thinking the exact same thing. Otherwise, the mere mention of a Regalia Ship wouldn’t have gotten him buzzing with such excitement. But expecting anyone else to draw the same conclusions as these two was asking for the moon.
Е̂ n̈ u m̈ а̃ . і̆.d
“Hm? Of what do you speak, my liege? I can certainly appreciate that it is a fine vessel. One that will undoubtedly serve our great empire well. However, if I may be so bold as to speak a different opinion, I must point out that the coming conflict will be waged upon the land, not the sea. What role could it possibly serve there…?” Elder Moltar queried, politely entering the conversation.
Takuto loved that Mynoghra fostered the sort of relaxed atmosphere that allowed for questions and open dialogue. In other nations, such informality might be considered an affront, yet for Takuto, being treated with excessive deference was far more uncomfortable.

However, this was hardly the ideal location to discuss national secrets.
Takuto cast a fleeting glance at the Dwarves. They had begun singing at the top of their lungs, ale swishing over their mugs as they drank and made merry. Then Takuto’s gaze flicked to the jester perched on the railing beside him.
“Vittorio, do you think we can pull it off? I believe we might just barely be able to manage it.”
“Au contraire… I reckon it’ll be mighty difficult, mon dieu. Fulfilling the conditions that is, not things unfolding according to your unholy machinations. Even if we can clear the tech requirements, the costs are going to be astronomical given the sheer scale of the vessel. Lemme repeat: astrooooo-nomical.”
Е̃n ǔ ma.. іd
“True enough. Even if everything goes according to plan, it’ll be a real nailbiter whether it’ll make it in time for the war.”
“Baaah!” Elder Moltar groaned. He could tell from Takuto’s furtive glances at their surroundings that this was a sensitive topic. But he felt his frustration building as he watched his king and Vittorio talk with great enthusiasm about something he couldn’t join in. He was less jealous and more bitter and resentful over his own inability to keep up. That said, it was unreasonable to expect him to divine the nature of their conversation with what little they gave him to go off of.
Sensing his subordinate’s bewilderment, Takuto revealed just a sliver of the strategy brewing within his mind.
“We’re talking about using a new Hero to get up to some mischief, you see?”

Astonishment flashed across Elder Moltar’s wrinkled face, his eyes going wide.
He never expected to hear that, of all things, come up in a place like this. A word with absolutely no conceivable connection to the matter at hand, no matter how he tried to link them.
Ëñ ũm̀а̌.іḋ
Yet Takuto looked absolutely delighted. As if he had just hatched the most deliciously wicked scheme imaginable, he began to hum.
“The very Hero whose exploits I look forward to witnessing every single time!” Vittorio appended.
That was enough to set off alarms for Elder Moltar. Should he feel that apprehensive when Takuto seemed so delighted by this Hero, though? It was anyone’s guess.
One thing alone was certain: another massive wave of change was upon them.
