Chapter 14: Calm
LOCATED south of Seldoch lay the transition zone connecting the northern and southern halves of Idoragya. The transition zone just so happened to be a grassland plain situated precisely along the border between Mynoghra and the El-Nah Alliance of Elementals. It was upon this very plain where the great battle to decide the fate of everything would commence.
Takuto stood facing north, Atou at his side.
“The day is finally upon us…”
The Army of Ruin stood at the ready behind him. Their numbers consisted primarily of units Takuto had produced, and a special strike force spearheaded by Dark Elves armed with firearms.
“Strike Force Captain Gia and Riflemen reporting for duty!”

“Sage Moltar and Mage Squad are also in position.”
The Dark Elf squadrons announced their presence with fervor. Every one of them was an elite warrior or mage armed to the teeth with guns. Their indomitable spirits forged through assiduous training remained unshaken, even in the face of the Great War.

“What’ll you do, Vittorio?” Takuto asked the empty space beside him. Vittorio materialized there.
Takuto had asked the question assuming Vittorio wouldn’t be far, but seeing him appear right next to him, like a stalker dogging his every move, left him unnerved. Atou bristled with palpable displeasure, her expression warping with disgust at her fellow Hero. Fortunately, she and Vittorio had the good sense not to bicker on this occasion.
“Hum-de-hum. I find myself interested in this warfront, and that one, and that other one, and over there looks quite tantalizing. I think I’ll just wander wherever my twisted little heart leads me!”
“Duly noted. Do as you please. That’s always been your style. I won’t cramp it now.”

“Hõ hõ hõ! My fingers are tingling with the thrill of battle for the first time in far too long, mon dieu!” Vittorio trilled, sounding more gleeful than usual. He was looking forward to this war as much as Takuto. For the Gleeful Spin Doctor loved nothing more than mayhem and destruction, chaos and madness…
“Looks like the Elfuur Sisters and Krähe’s squad are in position now. They’re ready to go on their end,” Takuto said, turning to Elder Moltar to run through the final checks.
“It was fortunate indeed that Lady Krähe has military command experience. She’s just the person to command the tempestuous Paladins of Ira.”
Takuto had no actual need to do any checks with his ability to grasp every piece of information through the Eternal Nations’ system. He was putting on a strategic performance. This wasn’t a one-man army. Nations, like organizations, can’t function if the person on top tries to do everything alone. Takuto understood this and the importance of conducting verbal confirmations with his subordinates. And his subordinates fully grasped the significance of articulating those confirmations aloud.

“She was quite the find. I need to handle the matter with her Saint properly too…”
While I know achieving the Ascension Victory will give her exactly what she wants, I’d much rather resolve the matter sooner for her. Keiji’s supposed to be handling the Scribe Saint. Will he pull his weight?

As Takuto conducted a final review of their forces with Elder Moltar and Gia, he simultaneously reconfirmed the deployment of each allied faction. This conflict didn’t allow for oversight or mistakes. Immediate support needed to be provided if anyone had issues at this point.
In war, victory or defeat is largely determined by the quality of prior preparations. Since every subsequent outcome would stem from the state of readiness achieved at this very moment, Takuto couldn’t overlook a single detail.
I’ve assigned the various factions to the most optimal positions. I don’t see any better strategies to play than these. But I’m bothered that we still don’t have any new leads on the Succubus Army or the Hack-and-Slash factions. How the Lawful Continent’s Saints will factor into this fight is also a matter of concern. I suppose I’ll just have to deal with those unknown elements as they come into play…
The other allied factions, specifically Yu and Keiji’s, were assigned to handle different battlefronts. Meanwhile, the Elfuur Sisters, Krähe, and the Paladins of Ira had been assigned to handle the Qualia side of the fight. As the primary objectives for the Phon’kaven and Sutharland troops were to serve as the rear guard and maintain control over occupied territories, they had been positioned behind the main force led by Takuto.
The battle about to unfold would be a clash of supernatural abilities waged by powerful beings backed by the gods. Even equipped with the armor and weapons Takuto provided, this world’s average soldier stood no chance in this confrontation. The Dark Elves were the strange ones for relentlessly insisting they serve on the front lines.
Takuto shifted his gaze toward the lands of El-Nah, shrouded in a thin, dark veil that hid what lay beyond. A soft, warm breeze, utterly incongruous with the battle that lay ahead, brushed gently against his cheek.

“King Takuto.”
“Atou…”
His most trusted subordinate and companion stood right beside him. That alone was enough to lift some of the gloom weighing on his spirits. And yet, Takuto’s inner thoughts remained complex. He had thought his life had ended on a sickbed, only to find himself transported to this strange new world. He had expected to spend his days here just as he had back home: living as a shut-in. But instead, he now found himself thrust onto the very front lines of a Great War.
Takuto sighed. “I never imagined things would turn out like this. All I wanted was to live in peace, yet before I knew it, I’m staring down the barrel of a full-scale war.”
“Things were still peaceful enough when we were merely assimilating the Dark Elves into our empire, but once those Paladins came sniffing around, our situation clearly began spiraling in a less than pleasant direction…”
Takuto sighed in unison with Atou.

If he were to claim now that “things were actually pretty good back then,” would his past self be shocked to hear it? Back then, he had been content to focus solely on the affairs of his own nation and nothing else. But a succession of battles and heart-wrenching partings had inexorably propelled Takuto into the position he held today.
For the longest time, he had puzzled over why he seemed to be plagued by endless trouble. Recently, however, he had realized that these conflicts were not mere coincidences but rather deliberately orchestrated events. That realization helped him understand better, but it definitely didn’t make him any happier about it.

Takuto turned his thoughts toward the mysterious entities who had summoned them to this world. Beings who had bestowed upon them something as grandiose as game systems, and who now seemed to be deriving amusement from watching the chaos unfold.
“Ultimately, everything going wrong is the fault of those eccentrics amusing themselves behind the scenes with us as pawns in their great board game… As much as I’d love to do something about them, we’ve got more immediate problems. Ugh. I really don’t feel like playing war games.” Takuto let out a long breath.
“But just think, we have emerged victorious from every major conflict thus far. Your Atou believes with all her heart that you will claim victory in this battle too.”
“I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Takuto remained unshakable in his resolve. Having already experienced the bitter taste of defeat before, he had banished his former complacency. The countless perilous battles he had fought since then had only served to further temper and refine his growth.
The Takuto of today was already several levels more competent than the Takuto Ira in his heyday. Few things can stand in the way of a man who, rather than merely viewing the world from the detached perspective of a video game, has experienced the reality of the battlefield—the visceral exchange of life and death—and truly grasped its significance.
For this battle, and every one before it, Takuto had formulated every strategy and tactic with a singular objective in mind: victory.
He was the Takuto Ira. The legendary player who once held an unshakeable grip on the number one spot in Eternal Nations’ global leaderboards.

The word defeat didn’t suit him. Only victory.
Takuto desired victory. Overwhelming, absolute victory.

To secure a world where they need not be dragged into such a senseless war—a world where they can live out their days in peace, their thoughts focused solely on their nation and neighbors.

Ascension would be secured no matter the obstacles they had to overcome to get there…
The true intentions of the gods lurking in the background is still shrouded in mist…though that mist is beginning to lift.

Takuto faced a multitude of problems. The biggest and most deadly of which entailed facing the gods themselves. The gods were entities of such staggering magnitude that even Takuto couldn’t hope to contend with them. A direct confrontation was absolutely out of the question. That didn’t mean he was going to give up. He couldn’t stop now.
I can’t predict how such powerful interlopers will impact our objectives. But we can’t afford to halt our advance… Besides…
Takuto pulled his thoughts back from the depths to which they had strayed, refocusing his attention on what lay before him.
“I can’t stand being toyed with without getting a chance to strike back.”
Deep within him, the power of the abyssal darkness signaled that the appointed hour had arrived. Takuto raised his hand with a fluid motion.
Gia fired the signal flare. Upon confirming the signal, the troops moved to take up their designated positions.

Takuto turned on his heel with Atou to board the secret weapon they had waiting at the back.
“Come, let’s begin, Atou. It’s wartime. Nothing out of the ordinary for us. Just another war. Business as usual for Mynoghra.”

Like a single, colossal beast, the army stirred to life. Acting as a flawless extension of Takuto’s will, they were a true army of ruin. They throbbed with the latent power to incinerate all in their path, waiting with bated breath for the moment they would hear the screams of their prey.
Feeling the warm breeze stroke his cheek, Takuto smiled. He smiled the same exact merciless smile he would occasionally make while playing Eternal Nations.
“Time to begin Mynoghra’s—Takuto Ira’s—war.”
The legion of ruin began their march of doom to strike down every foe and trample every obstacle underfoot.
