Chapter 274
Chapter 274: Trail
While Baek Woohyun stepped to the front and engaged in open combat, Kim Youngjun had slipped in from behind and carried out various acts of sabotage to cripple the research facility.
Perhaps for that reason, to the researchers belonging to the facility, Kim Youngjun was a greater source of fear than even Baek Woohyun. Because it was mostly his role to hunt down and kill those attempting to flee.
"Hm-hmm~"
"......"
W̃е ḃnо vѐl E̊n u m̆ӑ
Baek Woohyun, having arrived at the research facility's integrated command center, found the researchers slaughtered and Kim Youngjun humming to himself.
Just as expected—while he drew attention out front with open combat, the other man had quietly bored in from the rear and cleaned up every last researcher.

Befitting the ace of the infiltration team, it could be said he had performed his role exceptionally well.
Without Kim Youngjun, there would likely have been far fiercer resistance. They would have dropped blast barriers and detonated sections, doing whatever it took to slow Baek Woohyun's advance.
Whether even that would have done any more than buy a little time to run was doubtful, but at any rate, it would certainly have become a tiresome and troublesome affair.
Such had always been the case back on the 'other side,' whenever he had swept a research facility without Kim Youngjun or another member of the infiltration team.

"You're back?"
Kim Youngjun tossed the question out casually while operating the facility's computers, without even turning around—as though he already knew perfectly well who had come.
Well, the integrated command center had the eyes of the CCTV for monitoring the facility's situation, so he had likely confirmed Baek Woohyun's victory as well.
Or else he simply had firm faith that Baek Woohyun would win and return.

"Yeah."
Baek Woohyun answered just as naturally.

Rather than making a show of boasting about his victory, he stood beside Kim Youngjun with a composed expression.
"They deployed something called Etinel Prime. What was your impression facing it directly?"
"Pretty strong."
"Pretty strong."
"Hmm."
"Couldn't even properly identify friend or foe, though."

"So that's what the researchers were screaming about—that the stabilization wasn't complete. Okay, noted."
Kim Youngjun nodded.
If Etinel Prime had been a perfectly refined version, they would have tried to take it with them somehow when they fled.
The fact that they hadn't—that they had left it here—already made Etinel Prime's limitations clear.
"...Have you found anything?"
"Not yet."

Baek Woohyun cast a quick glance over the integrated command center with corpses of dead researchers strewn everywhere before asking; Kim Youngjun clicked his tongue and shook his head.
He added with a shrug that he had poked around in one thing after another, but nothing interesting had come up—whether because there was only unremarkable information to begin with.

"It's all the same obvious stuff. The retreat to the Otherworld is temporary, prepare for when we return, blah blah blah."
"......"
"Continue and refine the research that couldn't be taken along due to the risk of it being incomplete, blah blah blah. The only thing worth salvaging is—"
Tap.

Kim Youngjun's fingers moved briskly across the keyboard.
In response, a flood of documents appeared on the hologram monitor filling one wall.
"—this, maybe?"
'This is...'

Baek Woohyun quickly read through the contents of the documents. They were fairly well organized, and since he had read many similar documents before, grasping them was easy.
The contents detailed the Corporate Alliance's sponsorship records. They were densely packed with information on which corporation had provided what kind of support.
Enumӑ
It was presumably left behind to mean: use this to continue receiving sponsorship from the Corporate Alliance and press forward with the research.
One surprising fact was that the records continued right up until recently.
He had assumed that once the research facility made contact with the Otherworld and went out of control, the Corporate Alliance would have cut off all support—yet some corporations were still maintaining their backing.
It couldn't be put down to ignorance. Corporations aren't that foolish. Accordingly, those entities had to be considered accomplices in all but name.
'Geumshin Electronics. SH Heavy Industries. Maniac Motors.'
Baek Woohyun committed the list of corporations from the roster to memory. Among them were several names he knew very well.

There were places he had raided directly within 'Reverse Planet,' and the corporation belonging to the man who had once served as overall director of Project: Transcendence on the 'other side' was included as well.
It seemed that with such significant investment at stake, they had been unable to cut their losses even after the research facility went out of control.
'I'll have to deal with all of them later.'
"What about the Corporate Alliance people?"
Baek Woohyun, having consigned several corporations to their eventual end, posed the question to Kim Youngjun in a cool voice.
Among the conversations they had shared before coming here, there had been talk that the Corporate Alliance might have dispatched personnel to the research facility.
E n ũm̊ а̌ . і̌d̈
The reasoning had been that, having invested so much, they would want to salvage something—and if any of them were here, he intended to capture and interrogate them.
'This is a chance to find out why the Corporate Alliance was so obsessed with the project.'

On the 'other side,' he hadn't bothered to look into the Corporate Alliance's peculiar obsession. He had thought it was enough to kill them all and return to reality.
And even that was when roughly eight years had passed—before that, a burning vengeance, seething ferociously, had simply refused to concern itself with reasons.
Now that the opportunity had come again, Baek Woohyun found himself curious about what purpose the Corporate Alliance had been trying to achieve through 'Project: Transcendence.'
What had driven them to pour enormous sums of money into backing the research facility? Why on earth had they wished to see a single Transcendent brought into existence?

"You asked at just the right time."
Kim Youngjun smirked.
"Originally, there were no Corporate Alliance people here, you know? At least, that was the case when I checked immediately after taking over the integrated command center."
"Meaning..."

"Exactly."
Tap-tap-tap.

With the sound of the keyboard, the documents displayed on the main hologram monitor vanished, replaced by a corridor as captured by the CCTV.
Walking through it were four men and women in suits. Pinned to their lapels were badges—the Hellhound badge, signifying the elite among the hunting dogs.
Seeing that, Baek Woohyun's eyes narrowed. He had just realized that the Corporate Alliance took this seriously enough to send Hellhounds.
"As luck would have it, they showed up here a little while after we raided this place."
"...What a funny coincidence."
Whether true coincidence could exist at all under the watch of the two gods of 'Reverse Planet,' Isaac and Deus, was unknowable.

Which was why, even as Baek Woohyun answered that it was a funny coincidence, his eyes had settled into a cool stillness—as if gauging which of them had brought this situation about.
But that too was only for a moment. Because regardless of which side had drawn the Corporate Alliance's tail here, what he needed to do was clearly determined.
It didn't matter what their visit was in preparation for. He only needed to impose his will, and he possessed the ability to do so.
"Anyway—the Corporate Alliance tail we were trying to catch has come to us on its own, so all that's left is to climb up from it to reach the body."
"For that, we'd need to subdue those ones first."
"Want help?"

"No."
"No."

Baek Woohyun shook his head, wrapping himself in a transparent aura as he drew up the power of his supernatural ability.
His answer was utterly resolute, even though the enemy was four Hellhounds—the elite hunting dogs, assumed to carry equipment imbued with Otherworld power.
It was a response that could only come from a judgment that, formidable as they certainly were, even they did not measure up to him.
"I'm more than enough on my own."
Е ń ŭmа̇ . ǐ.d̃
"Okay~"
Rather than asking if he was really sure, Kim Youngjun immediately went back to tapping at the keyboard and continuing his investigation. He had accepted the claim without a moment's hesitation.
A fitting display of trust from the one who understood Baek Woohyun's strength as a telekinesis build within 'Reverse Planet' better than anyone except the studio staff.
Leaving him behind, Baek Woohyun immediately lifted his body with telekinesis and moved, shooting out of the command center fast as a fired arrow.

Thanks to the corridor being quite generously wide, he struck nothing despite moving at tremendous speed. It would have been the same even if it were narrow, but regardless.
Some time passed as he flew through, guided by the facility's internal map he had memorized from the integrated command center.
Е n̊ u̇ḿ а̇
Baek Woohyun detected the presence of the four individuals through the telekinetic force field he had spread out. Each and every one of them gave off a charged, tingling sense of presence.
Without exception, a revolting Otherworld energy seeped from them, making it utterly impossible to mistake them for anyone else even if he tried.
But separate from how he felt about it, being careful when dealing with them was certain. There was no telling what tricks equipment imbued with Otherworld power might pull.
The Hellhound he had faced before—one that had been, at best, a single-head-class opponent—had still managed to push him quite hard with Otherworld power equipment, hadn't he?
"......"
Even accounting for the fact that his build's power hadn't been sufficient back then, it had been an impressive thing.

'So, let's hit them hard in one go.'
The eyes of Baek Woohyun as he flew via telekinesis flashed fiercely. The ash-gray flames burning violently meant he was drawing his supernatural ability output even higher.
His speed, already fast, grew faster still, to the point that a transparent afterimage of flames lingered in his wake—though faint, it faded quickly.
He even wrapped a transparent telekinetic wall around himself. His intentions were plain to see at a glance.
"...! He's coming! Battle ready!"
Kra-BOOM——!
Е n̊ ü m_ӓ.і̄ḋ
The middle-aged Hellhound man at the front called out upon realizing Baek Woohyun was approaching at extreme speed—but unfortunately, it was of little consequence.
Because Baek Woohyun slammed into them nearly at the same moment the shout was made. A shockwave that was hard to believe had come from a single person's collision radiated outward in all directions.

The impact was so intense that the vibrations could be felt anywhere within the research facility.
"Gugh!"
"Damn...!"
Naturally, the four Hellhounds who had taken that collision head-on couldn't possibly be unscathed. They tumbled across the floor, crying out.
Ӗn̆u̇ m̌ а
The only reason it stopped there was because the middle-aged Hellhound man at the front—likely the captain—had quickly employed a defensive technique.
Had he not, by now at least one of the four would have had at minimum an arm or leg snapped from the impact, and at maximum a broken neck.
"......"
Rooooar!

Baek Woohyun had no intention of giving the Hellhounds time to collect themselves. Had he wanted to courteously wait for his opponents, he wouldn't have ambushed them in the first place.
That was why, the moment the numbing shock from the collision faded, he drew up his supernatural ability.
Е̌nũm̄а̄
"Die."
"—Damn it, [Strange Rocks]!"
Crackle!
In the instant before the surging telekinetic force swept over the Hellhounds following the short declaration, the one who had been furthest back and sustained the least damage stepped forward and used a defensive technique.
Bizarrely shaped rocks erupted one after another from the dented, damaged corridor floor, meeting the telekinesis in place of the Hellhounds.
It was a telekinetic force that tore through alloy steel with ease, yet the rocks likewise carried supernatural ability power—thanks to which, [Strange Rocks] held firm.

The problem was that even that was a defense within Baek Woohyun's expectations.
Having judged that Hellhounds would surely be able to block the first attack, he had not loaded particularly strong force into that first strike to begin with.
What reason could there be for [Strange Rocks] to maintain its form even against his telekinesis? Because with one hand he wielded the telekinesis, and with the other he had formed a [Black Hole].
'One down, first.'
Crack!
