Dominic opened his eyes wide.
‘Aura?’
The thought that it was impossible crossed his mind.
But he soon realized that, at least theoretically, it was not strange for there to be aura inside his body.
‘Unlike mana, which belongs to the realm of talent, aura is something every human possesses to some degree within their body.’
That was certainly what he had learned.
Eňu m̌ а́ . ïď
‘The criterion that separates third-rate and second-rate is whether you can draw that aura out of your body. And the criterion that separates second-rate and first-rate is whether you can increase the amount of that aura.’
Therefore, the fact that a faint aura was being felt inside Dominic’s body was merely proof that he was a swordsman, nothing particularly strange.

‘But whether you can feel that faint aura or not is truly important.’
The standard that divided third-rate from those below third-rate.
That was precisely whether one could perceive, even faintly, the aura within their body.
And Dominic had come to feel an aura that he ordinarily would never have sensed—not even if a lifetime had passed—through the extraordinary combination of the Lich King’s magic and three blue pills.

‘This is an opportunity.’
Dominic clenched his fist tightly as he thought.
‘It’s also a once-in-a-lifetime stroke of fortune that an ordinary person could never obtain, no matter how hard they tried for their entire life.’
Who could have imagined that the Lich King’s magic and Langtang’s artifact would produce such synergy?

Moreover, even if someone were to experience the synergy created by the Lich King’s magic and Langtang’s artifact, there would be no one able to feel aura.
Because people usually displayed talent in only one direction—either magic or swordsmanship.

But Dominic was rare—perhaps the only one in the world—a mage and swordsman, and thanks to that, he could sense the aura inside his body through magic.
‘Carefully, slowly.’
Dominic tried not to get overly excited and maintained his composure.
As he took a deep breath, he once again felt the aura within his body more clearly.
His aura amounted to no more than a handful at best.
‘But if I can draw this aura out of my body and coat my sword with it, I can immediately step into the threshold of a second-rate knight.’

Up to second-rate, the quantity of aura was not all that important.
It was from first-rate that one truly began increasing the amount of aura; until then, the focus was on sensing aura and drawing it out.
‘For now, reaching second-rate is the priority. If I can just do that…’
As Dominic imagined himself reaching the realm of second-rate, he had to rein in his mind once more to avoid getting carried away.
‘Now I understand why so many people ruin their training because they can’t concentrate.’
Dominic gave a bitter smile.

Then, this time truly, he erased all stray thoughts and focused on the aura inside his body.
Clearing away stray thoughts was difficult, but once he concentrated fully on the aura, maintaining that focus was easy.

‘My aura… has a warm quality. And perhaps because the amount is small, it’s soft, like mist.’
Dominic first tried to grasp the nature of his own aura.
Knowing what kind of aura one had was the first step toward controlling it.
‘For something soft, it moves quickly and violently, and it seems eager to go outside.’

That the aura was outward-oriented was a good sign.
Some third-rate knights struggled to advance to second-rate because of inward-oriented aura.
‘Now that I think I understand my aura well enough, shall I try drawing it out?’
Tensing up, Dominic drew his sword.

Then he attempted to draw the aura out of his body and coat the sword with it.
Naturally, it was not easy. Though he had hoped, though he had hoped, no miracle of succeeding in a single attempt occurred.

‘It’s fine.’
Despite failing, Dominic smiled instead.
‘Persisting is my specialty.’
Dominic tried once more to move his aura. Again, again, and again.
But contrary to its outward-oriented nature, the aura stubbornly refused to move, as if it were nailed in place.
“…….”

Dominic’s brow furrowed, and cold sweat streamed down his forehead.
There was only a handful of aura, yet as he struggled to move that small amount, the vitality of his entire body was being drained away.
A long stretch of time passed—long enough that it would not have been strange for an ordinary person to want to give up.
Moreover, since his five senses had been maximized by the Lich King’s magic and the blue pills, the bodily fatigue that would normally have been bearable felt agonizing, as if he had been struck by lightning.
His hands and feet trembled, and his head spun as though he might collapse.
The gentle breeze brushing his cheeks felt like blades, and the rustling sounds around him roared in his ears like thunder. Even the sensation of the sword in his grip felt as though it were grinding his hand away.

Yet Dominic did not give up.
It was the opportunity he had yearned for his entire life.

He had lived while wishing for this alone.
There was no way he could give up.
But despite such effort, the aura did not move in the slightest.
As if mocking Dominic, it merely raged about in place.

‘Is it impossible?’
Gritting his teeth as cold sweat poured down like rain, Dominic thought,
‘Are you saying that someone like me, a dullard like me, can never climb higher no matter how much I struggle and strive?’
If that were the case, then all the more he could not give up.

This was a clue he had barely managed to find after dying once and living twice.
Even if this was a dead end, even if there was no further path forward, Dominic had to carve a way through.

‘Because I want it.’
Dominic slowly closed his eyes.
‘Because I want it so much that I yearned for it even at the moment of death.’
The first death, when he closed his eyes without even being able to trade a few moves with the enemy nation, without being of any help to his family.
He never wanted to meet such a hollow death again.
‘I did my best,’ ‘I tried hard’—such words were no longer enough.

Those words carried regrets that could never be undone.
Dominic had to achieve it, somehow.
So that he would never regret it again, so that his first death would not have been in vain.
“Haah.”
He let out a long breath.
And he calmed his boiling emotions.

After straining himself to the limit, he had paradoxically realized that mere effort alone could not move aura.
‘Then what should I do?’

Dominic sank into thought. The Lich King’s magic was being sustained by his infinite mana, but the energy of the blue pills was steadily declining.
‘The number of blue pills remaining is seven.’
Opportunities to heighten his senses to this degree remained only twice.
Of course, it was possible to obtain more blue pills from Maximilian Langtang.

But……
‘When it comes to aura, success does not come from effort alone.’
It was different from magic, where one’s skill increased in proportion to effort.
Dominic instinctively sensed that if not now, he would never gain enlightenment regarding aura for the rest of his life.

‘So I have to draw out aura now. Think—think. How can I draw aura out?’
Dominic recalled all the second-rate knights he had seen so far.

And soon, he realized that thinking about second-rate knights was pointless.
‘They’re people who barely succeeded in drawing aura outside their bodies. I’ve even heard that some of them don’t know exactly how they handle aura.’
So there was no point in using them as a reference.
‘Then who should I think of?’
The question arose, and the answer was simple.
‘Father.’

The Duke of Anika. The greatest swordsman Dominic knew, and the strongest swordsman currently existing in this world.
There was no one else to think of besides the Duke of Anika.
The image of the Duke of Anika surfaced in Dominic’s mind.
In his imagination, the Duke of Anika stood straight, gripping his sword.
The background was the training ground. The very same training ground where Dominic had once stood while sparring with the Duke of Anika.
The Duke of Anika slowly raised his sword.

Within his mind, Dominic carefully observed the Duke of Anika.
‘I can’t tell anything right now.’

More accurately, nothing was visible to Dominic’s eyes yet.
‘How should I look?’
Looking in the ordinary way, the way he had always looked until now, would be useless.
‘A fundamental change is needed.’

Where, and how, should he change?
‘In an unimaginable direction—something revolutionary.’
Suddenly, something came to Dominic’s mind.
‘Mana.’

Mana and aura were different.
But Dominic did not know aura, while he knew mana.

‘And since both energies exist within the body, it’s not as though they have nothing in common.’
So what if he looked at aura from the perspective with which he viewed mana?
A shiver ran through Dominic’s body.
Feeling the mana enveloping his body, Dominic imagined the Duke of Anika while maintaining that very sensation.
Then he saw something different from before.
It was a certain intense energy enveloping the Duke of Anika’s entire body with minimal input yet maximum efficiency.

‘I can see it.’
A tremor ran through his whole body. At the same time, his concentration rose to its peak.
In his mental image, the Duke of Anika once again raised his sword. As he did, part of the energy enveloping the Duke of Anika’s body gathered into the sword.
‘Just a little more, just a little more…….’
Dominic widened the two eyes in his mind.
The Duke of Anika’s energy etched itself onto Dominic’s retinas.

In reality, Dominic slowly raised his sword.
And he repeated within his own body exactly the same pathway that had been engraved onto his retinas.

Something astonishing happened.
The handful of energy that had seemed nailed in place within Dominic’s body began to move—slowly, but unmistakably.
It was extremely slow.
But Dominic did not grow impatient.

With patience, he guided the aura toward his fingertips.
Just as if he were handling mana.
The aura, though bewildered, followed Dominic’s guidance and moved sluggishly.
From his abdomen to his chest, to his right shoulder, and finally to his palm.

‘Phew.’
It was an unbelievable achievement.

But Dominic did not get carried away.
There was still something left to do—the most important part.
Dominic spread the aura gathered in his palm evenly.
Then he slowly infused it into the sword.
A scorching, tingling energy surged out at a speed incomparable to before, wrapping itself around the sword.
‘It’s trying to disperse!’

Controlling aura that had left the body and coating it onto a sword was a million times more difficult than moving aura within the body.
Dominic’s brow furrowed.
Not only his hand, but his arm, and even his entire body trembled violently. His arm hurt so badly that he wanted to lower it immediately.
But Dominic endured, and endured again.
And amid the pain, he focused his entire mind to gather together the aura that was trying to scatter.
And then……

Wooooong!
At last, Dominic’s aura left his hand and transferred to the sword.

Dominic tried to coat the entire blade evenly, as if spreading it on.
Manipulating aura that had been separated from the body using only one’s mind was a feat close to a miracle.
But strangely enough, moving the aura coating the sword was easier than controlling the aura rampaging inside his body.
‘Is it because of my experience handling mana?’

That thought crossed his mind even as he concentrated.
When the aura finally spread evenly across the entire sword, Dominic opened his eyes.
And he witnessed an astonishing sight.
“Aura…….”
