Chapter 4
Chapter 4
At Dominic’s words, Peledor flinched.
“After assigning me such an instructor, if I were to expect to be treated as the Head of the family by you all, that would mean I was an idiot.”
Instead of becoming a fool who knew nothing but sword training once more, Dominic decided to become someone who understood the ways of the world yet pretended not to, deliberately clinging to Swordsmanship training.
It seemed more advantageous for his future plans, and it also felt like it could serve as a plausible excuse when he accidentally spoke of knowledge from the future, like earlier.

“Young Master…….”
The look in Peledor’s eyes as he stared at Dominic slowly changed.

Dominic, who had spent his entire life training only with the sword and was clumsy at reading people’s emotions, did not realize it, but the emotion filling Peledor’s eyes was the surprise one felt upon discovering an unexpected talent.
‘If Young Master Dominic actually knew everything, even if the balance of power didn’t completely change, the story might turn out a bit differently.’
It was just as Peledor was thinking that—
“But don’t worry.”

Dominic said indifferently as he passed by Peledor.
“I have no interest in whatever actions you all choose to take.”
At those words, Peledor fell into confusion once more.
‘Did he bring up the Head of the family position not because he coveted it, but simply to shake me?’

While Peledor floundered in worries he could not resolve, Dominic knocked on the door to his father’s office—the Duke Anika’s.
“Who is it.”

The Duke Anika’s deep, heavy voice came from inside.
“Father, it’s me.”
Dominic answered.
After a brief silence, the door suddenly flew open.
The Duke Anika was a man like a straight piece of bamboo.
He was the sort who would choose to break rather than bend, never tolerated anything that went against his principles, and strove to deliver fair judgments wherever he was.

And above all, he was a man who thoroughly adhered to the maxim, ‘Talent in Swordsmanship is the true proof of Anika.’
Because of that, though he loved Dominic deeply, he could not openly acknowledge him.
He thought that would be favoritism, and an act of denying the Anika family’s creed.
And yet…….
“I heard you submitted a graduation request to Bread. Is that true, Dominic?”
The Duke Anika asked in a stiff voice.

‘How many times have I been asked this question today?’
Thinking something pointless, Dominic nodded.

“It is.”
“Huh.”
The Duke Anika pressed a hand to his forehead.
“Why did you do such a thing?”

It was a simple question, but the meaning contained within it was weighty.
To answer the Duke Anika properly, Dominic steadied his breath.
‘There is an easy way, actually.’
Dominic recalled how Bread had beaten him under the pretense of instruction.

If he were to tell that truth, the Duke Anika would, albeit reluctantly, remove Bread from before Dominic.
The Duke Anika was not the type to overlook someone who failed to fulfill their duties.

But Dominic did not do so.
The duel with Bread was the first button that would change his life.
He did not want to accomplish that with someone else’s help.
Even if there were unreasonable aspects to it, he wanted to fasten at least the first button with his own hands.
‘And in the long run, that’s better too.’
Going forward, Dominic harbored a tremendous plan—to train in Magic within a prestigious Swordsmanship family.

But if he showed from the outset that he was receiving help from his father, the Duke Anika, the thorny path he would have to push through later would become even harsher.
‘I need to show that I can solve problems on my own.’
Having steeled his resolve, Dominic slowly lifted his head and met the Duke Anika’s gaze.
“I asked why you did it, Dominic.”
Right on cue, the Duke Anika asked once more.
Dominic drew in a breath and opened his mouth, filling it with all the resolve he could muster.

“Because I believe Bread is not suitable to teach me.”
“Huh.”

The Duke Anika pressed his forehead again.
“He is stronger than you.”
Once again, many meanings were packed into the Duke Anika’s words.
‘As expected, to survive here, I first need to prove my ‘strength’ by winning the duel with Bread.’

Dominic thought.
‘I need to show my strength and prove that I am someone worthy of respect.’
In the House of Anika, those with talent and strength were respected. Therefore, if he was planning an unconventional course of action, he needed to cultivate strength.
‘Because I have no talent.’

Feeling a bitter twinge, Dominic spoke.
“I wish to study under a different instructor. Bread is not a suitable person to teach me.”

At Dominic’s words, the Duke Anika’s face twisted.
It was because he thought Dominic was being stubborn simply because he disliked Bread, without any countermeasure.
“Do you want a different Swordsmanship Instructor? But if your mindset is this lazy and muddled, the result will be the same no matter which instructor I attach to you.”
Dominic quietly looked at his father.
In his previous life, Duke Anika clearly knew that Dominic did not have even a speck of talent with the sword.
But he did not stop Dominic from continuing to cling to the House of Anika, nor from training with the sword.

‘Back then, I didn’t know. What that meant.’
But now, having lived one life and even experienced death, he knew.
‘Father didn’t want to give up on me. No, he never gave up on me.’
Even after Russell became the Head of the family, even after Dominic passed the age of thirty, Duke Anika did not give up on Dominic.
‘Even if I couldn’t become a strong Swordsman like Russell, even if I remained an ordinary person, he wanted to give me a chance.’
Dominic’s heart sank heavily.

“Father, I am serious.”
Dominic spoke in a solemn tone, as deep as his sunken heart.

Duke Anika’s eyes widened, and Dominic’s heart pounded.
‘From now on, I have to face Father head-on.’
Duke Anika had not given up on Dominic ‘as a Swordsman’, but he surely had never even imagined Dominic ‘as a Mage’.
Dominic knew well how much pride Duke Anika took in Swordsmanship.
Ẽ nu mа
Telling such a father that he intended to abandon Swordsmanship and switch to Magic could not be easy.
Moreover, the relationship between the House of Langtang, which currently dominated the magical world, and the House of Anika was not good, making it all the more so.
“You’ve been spouting nothing but incomprehensible words since earlier.”
Duke Anika frowned.

“Why is Bread lacking as your instructor?”
At that question, Dominic realized the time had come.

“What I want is not another ‘Swordsmanship’ Instructor.”
Duke Anika did not understand Dominic’s words at once and raised one eyebrow.
“What do you mean by that?”
“I…….”
Dominic tightly clenched both hands.
Choosing a path other than Swordsmanship, which he had trained in by devoting all the years of his previous life, was not easy even for himself.

But he had to do it.
To protect the House of Anika as a member of the House of Anika, and to live a humane life that he had never been able to obtain in his previous life.
“I intend to learn Magic.”
A heavy silence flowed through the office.
Duke Anika looked at Dominic with an expression of disbelief.
Dominic quietly maintained his silence and waited until Duke Anika realized that his words were sincere.

Duke Anika stood up from his seat.
He pushed the documents aside, came around the desk, and stood in front of Dominic.

“Are you running away because you’ve felt your limits in Swordsmanship?”
He said in a low, sunken voice.
Surprisingly, there was neither anger nor disappointment in Duke Anika’s tone.
Duke Anika was simply, genuinely curious about why Dominic had made up his mind like that.
Ē ñŭm̌а . і d̃
‘This is the first and last chance.’
Dominic swallowed.
This would be the first time Duke Anika took Dominic’s words seriously and sought to hear his reasons.
And if he failed to persuade Duke Anika at this first moment, the chance would never come again.

And Duke Anika would be disappointed in Dominic beyond measure.
This time, he might truly give up on Dominic.

“That is not the case.”
Dominic spoke with sincerity, desperately hoping that his sincerity would reach his father.
“For me, Magic is simply the right path.”
At Dominic’s words, Duke Anika let out a sigh.
Anguish surfaced in Duke Anika’s blue eyes.
“Why did you come to think that way?”

Dominic grew tense once more.
‘Would Father believe it if I told him that I regressed?’
He fell into a realistic dilemma.
In the history of the Empire, there had been no one who died and came back to life, let alone someone who returned to the past.
Even in myths where all kinds of absurd things occurred, it was said that returning from death was impossible.
In such a situation, bringing up a story of regression would not be an appropriate choice.

In the worst case, he might be looked at as having gone mad after feeling he had no talent for Swordsmanship and reaching a dead end.
So Dominic decided not to explain.

“If I prove that I have chosen the right path myself, will you allow me to learn Magic?”
He would simply prove it. That he was right, in the way of the House of Anika.
In that instant, Duke Anika’s expression changed.
Whereas until now he had been serious but thinking of stopping Dominic, now his heart wavered at Dominic’s words that he would ‘prove himself’.

‘Has this child, my son Dominic, ever stepped forward to prove something so resolutely, with such clear eyes?’
A small question plopped into Duke Anika’s mind.
‘No, this is the first time.’
After realizing that he had no talent for the sword, Dominic had only devoted himself to training and never challenged anything.

Duke Anika looked at Dominic anew.
He was only a twelve-year-old child, clearly a child who until yesterday had silently done nothing but train, yet today he looked somehow different.
Е n̊ûm̄ a
It couldn’t be so, yet Duke Anika thought that Dominic might not be twelve years old.
What twelve-year-old in the world could have eyes like that?
What twelve-year-old in the world could…… make a declaration about escaping the fate given to him from birth, with the resolve to throw away his entire life?
“……Very well.”
Before he was even conscious of what he was saying, words of affirmation came out of Duke Anika’s mouth.
At Duke Anika’s permission, Dominic’s eyes widened.

He clenched his fist tightly.
All kinds of emotions that could not be put into words surged up inside his heart.
There were still many mountains to cross and many matters to resolve, but just from obtaining words of affirmation from his father, he felt as though he had gained ten thousand troops.
“Thank……you.”
Dominic said in an overwhelmed tone.
“I hope you are someone who can take responsibility for your words.”

Duke Anika spoke again in a cold tone and turned away.
Dominic stared for a long while at his father’s back as he stood with his hands clasped behind him, then bowed and left the room.
