Chapter 678
Chapter 678
A Thousand Years Ago (2)
A brief, awkward silence lingered.
He was physically here, yet they said he’d gone to the past. Did that even make sense?
Claude, who prided himself on being the most rational person in the domain, looked utterly dumbfounded as he asked,
“Jerome?”
W ѐb n o v̇ е̇l Е̇nûm̂ а.
“Yes.”
“You and I are among the few intellectuals in the domain.”

“……”
“Do you really think what you’re saying makes sense?”
Jerome nodded with a stern expression.
“I understand it sounds unbelievable. But for now, it’s the most plausible hypothesis we have. Ghislain is currently in the past. Specifically… to meet the Saintess from a thousand years ago, and her companions.”
Ẇ е̌b n̆_õ v̌ е l _Е̇ n u m̃ à
Jerome’s demeanor was unwavering. He truly believed Ghislain had traveled to the past.
Belinda asked again, her voice trembling slightly.
“Um… I think we need a bit more explanation here.”
“As you all know, the Saintess said she would meet Ghislain again. For that to happen…”

Jerome calmly laid out his hypothesis. Thanks to the many things Ghislain had already told them about his dreams, it wasn’t hard for the others to grasp.
The more they heard, the more it seemed plausible. If Jerome’s hypothesis was correct, everything they’d witnessed so far made sense.

But a hypothesis was still just a hypothesis. It wasn’t something they could be certain about.
As the others sat silently, Vanessa raised a question.
“Even if that’s true… if only his consciousness went to the past, how would he meet the Saintess?”
That was something Jerome had been wondering about as well. But now, he had an answer.
“Possession.”
“Possession…?”

Everyone’s faces twisted with unease. Possession? Who even believed in that sort of thing?
Still, Jerome continued to speak with the same confident tone.
“Ghislain is undoubtedly possessing the body of our Tower’s Founder. As one of the Hero’s companions.”
“……”
“In other words! One of the Hero’s companions from a thousand years ago… that mage was, in fact, Ghislain!”
“Wow…”

Claude let out a sarcastic-sounding sigh of admiration, his face blatantly mocking. Jerome felt a twinge of embarrassment.
The others couldn’t find the words to respond. The story was getting harder and harder to believe.

Claude clicked his tongue and said,
“Do you know the most important part of pulling off a scam?”
“What is it?”
“It has to sound convincing.”

“……”
“I mean, possession and all that! If you force everything to fit your hypothesis like this, there’s nothing that wouldn’t make sense!”
Jerome, as if he had expected this kind of resistance, immediately pulled a book from inside his coat.
“It’s all written here.”

“What is that?”
“A record written by the Founder of our Magic Tower himself.”
Е̂.n̆ û m̂ ā . іď
Belinda tilted her head.
“...Something like that exists? I thought all records from a thousand years ago were lost?”
That was precisely why they’d never been able to identify the Adversary with certainty, they were always left merely speculating.
Jerome spoke with a slightly awkward look.
“That’s right. This is my first time seeing it as well. I’m certain this book didn’t exist in the Magic Tower before.”
“But… it just suddenly appeared?”

“Yes… hard as it may be to believe…”
“……”
Silence fell once more. Who could possibly believe that a book that had never existed suddenly materialized? It would be far more plausible to say that Jerome had simply overlooked it.
Jerome, clearly frustrated, beat his chest as he spoke.
“I swear it’s true. I’ve read every book in the Magic Tower. But this one… I have no idea how I missed it!”
He looked genuinely wronged. Ever composed, Vanessa tried to calm him down.

“Alright. Let’s say you’re right.”
“I’m not saying it’s like that, I’m telling you it is!”

“Okay, I believe you. You’re saying this book is your evidence, right?”
“Yes! In here, the Founder of the Magic Tower wrote it all down himself!”
Jerome opened the book.
Everyone present was a Transcendent, so they could easily read the fine text from afar. Only Claude leaned in close to get a better look at the writing.

[“I am Astion, the first Tower Master who founded the Tower of Radiance, and the one who inherited the name of the great Dragon Lord Asterion.
On the advice of a close friend, I have decided to record the events I have experienced in this book.
Born with a mystical constitution, I have been able to host entities known as Possessors since I was a child.
Through them, I gained vast knowledge and quickly grew stronger as a mage. They also laid the foundation for my companions’ growth. Later, we journeyed together…”]

It was genuinely fascinating. If what the book described was true, then Possessors were indeed real.
The book briefly outlined how the mage named Astion, who once lived in a rural village, set off on a journey with his friends, and the events that took place during that time.

[“…One day, while rescuing villagers captured by bandits, I suddenly came into contact with a Possessor. That alone wasn’t unusual, but this Possessor was unlike any I had encountered before.”]
At some point, everyone had fallen silent, wholly absorbed in reading. Their breaths grew faster as they read on. The contents were nearly unbelievable.
[“I was forcibly taken over. The Possessor who seized my body was incredibly powerful. His consciousness surpassed even that of a Transcendent, and he possessed a wealth of mysterious knowledge. He introduced himself as follows.”]
Belinda, unable to stop herself, read the following line aloud.
“The Grand Duke of Ritania and King of Mercenaries…”
She trailed off, unable to finish the sentence. Jerome could no longer hold it in and uttered the name.

“Ghislain Ferdium.”
“……”
Everyone stared at one another in a daze. What did Jerome mean, that Ghislain’s name was written in the records of the Magic Tower?
Claude shot up from his seat and pointed a finger accusingly at Jerome.
“Does this even make sense?! This thing, this thing! You just slapped it together in a rush, didn’t you? All because you wanted to trick us into believing your theory is right!”
That explanation seemed far more plausible than believing the book’s contents were true. In an instant, Jerome was branded a fraud.

Jerome cried out in desperation.
“I didn’t make this! I swear, this was really written in here!”

“And the fact that you only just now discovered a book that records the past and even has our Lord’s name in it, how does that not strike anyone else as suspicious? This is a contradiction piled on contradiction!”
“I’m losing my mind too, trying to understand it!”
Belinda stepped in, trying to calm the two of them down.
“Then what does it say next? Let’s read the rest first!”

As the pages were turned, new text appeared.
[Thanks to Ghislain, the group was able to grow rapidly. I’m not sure why, but Ghislain taught them many things and put them through relentless training. It was truly… demonic.]
It described in surprising detail how Ghislain trained and, perhaps more accurately, tormented them.
It even recounted how he forcibly seized territories and handed them out to others, claimed a gold mine for himself, and generally acted completely out of control with plenty of profanities scribbled in between.

Belinda, reading it, murmured unconsciously,
“Yup, that’s definitely the Young Master.”
Еn̆u ḿа̂
Everyone nodded in agreement. The more they read, the more unmistakably Ghislain, the depiction became.
A once-in-a-millennium genius or rather, someone who should only be born once every thousand years. That personality was hard to mistake.
Still, people remained skeptical. After all, it could have been fabricated with enough effort.
Jerome knew Ghislain’s personality all too well. He’d once been trapped in a carriage, endlessly crafting artifacts without rest because of him.
Claude eyed him suspiciously and asked,
“So, you’re saying the Lord’s feats are written in this book… What comes next? Since it’s a thousand-year-old record, it should cover everything, right?”

Everyone was curious about the same thing. What happened in the past, who the Adversary was, what Ghislain accomplished and discovered, it should all be recorded.
Jerome, now looking troubled, turned the pages again.
“……”
There was nothing more. The final entry was the one about Ghislain seizing the estate, taking the gold mine, and putting his companions through harsh training.
Claude pointed his finger again.
“He stopped writing, didn’t he! Couldn’t keep making it up anymore! You were planning to run this scam while the Elf Chieftain wasn’t around! And who’s going to confirm whether this Astion guy even existed?!”

Ereneth left not long after Ghislain collapsed. There was no longer any reason for her to stay here.
What mattered most to her was eradicating the Salvation Church. So, she set off to track down Gartros and the remaining remnants.

At Claude’s words, Jerome responded sullenly.
“No… I didn’t make it up…”
Jerome felt like he was going mad. He knew he hadn’t made it up, but the way the conversation had gone made it sound like he had.
Everyone stared at the book with doubtful expressions. Jerome wasn’t the type to lie, and he had no reason to, either.
Е̌ṅu m̄ ӓ
It made more sense to believe that something was happening even Jerome didn’t understand.
Vanessa asked,
“This Astion person… are they really the first Tower Master?”
“To be honest, I only just learned the name too. The name of the first Tower Master was never properly passed down.”

Claude interjected again, confronting Jerome.
“There’s a major contradiction in the story so far.”
E ń um а̊
“What is it?”
“According to the hypothesis, the Lord took over the body of Astion… the first Tower Master, right?”
“Right?”
“But in the Lord’s dream, that mage was using magic.”
“Right?”
“Then that would mean the mage was actually the Lord… but how could the Lord use magic?”

“Maybe… he learned it there?”
“You really think that’s possible? With the Lord’s brain? You think magic is something you just read in a book and pick up easily? If that were the case, I’d have mastered it ages ago. I’m the smartest one here.”
“…”
That was something Jerome had never thought about before. Unable to respond, he fell silent at which point Belinda suddenly snapped.
“Our young master is smart; he just doesn’t study! If he tried, he’d be great at it!”
“Even if you’re smart, magic isn’t that easy!”
Е.ṅ u m̌а̄
It was true that Ghislain wasn’t dumb.
Judging from the way he had conducted wars so far, Ghislain was a genius in strategy and tactics - that required intelligence.

However, magic was a completely different field. Belinda knew this, yet she insisted otherwise. To her, Ghislain was the smartest person in the world.
“What’s so impossible about it? If you study, you can do anything!”
“I’ve told you a hundred times just because your body is strong doesn’t mean your brain is!”
“Our young master is both strong and smart!”

The two continued bickering. But aside from Belinda, the others were skeptical of the idea that Ghislain had learned magic.
Magic was an incredibly difficult discipline. Even Alfoi, who had been the heir to the Magic Tower, spent over ten years studying there and only reached the Third Circle.
After coming to Fenris, enduring countless live combat experiences and even absorbing a Dragon Heart, he barely managed to reach the Fifth Circle.
And what about Vanessa? Even with her exceptional talent, she had studied for over ten years since she was young.

She too had to absorb a Dragon Heart in order to reach the Seventh Circle.
That meant that to wield magic the way Ghislain had seen in the dream, one would have to dedicate years solely to studying magic. But studying with books all day? That just didn’t suit Ghislain’s personality at all.

Everyone fell into thought. Realistically, it didn’t make sense. And yet, it felt far too coincidental to simply dismiss.
Gillian finally spoke, his expression heavy.
“His Majesty can do anything he sets his mind to.”
He hoped Jerome’s hypothesis was true. It was far better for Ghislain to have traveled to the past than to remain unconscious like this.
Claude clicked his tongue and shook his head. There was no point trying to point out Ghislain’s flaws to Belinda or Gillian, it simply wouldn’t get through to them.
To end the meaningless back-and-forth, Vanessa calmly laid out the situation.

“For now… if we assume Sir Jerome’s hypothesis is correct… that would mean His Majesty has traveled to the past and is living there, right? Then… could he have met the Saintess too?”
“Well… there’s nothing specific about the Saintess or the Hero. It just mentions ‘friends,’ so I can’t say for sure.”
“Still, it’s the most plausible theory we’ve got. After all, the Saintess did say they would meet again.”
“I think so too. It was the Saintess’s divine power that sent him to the past.”
“Why did she call him?”
“Maybe… she wanted to reveal some secret we don’t know. And maybe she needs Ghislain’s power too.”s

“Doesn’t everything done in the past ultimately lead to a fixed result?”
Everyone nodded at that. The future was already determined. They had defeated the Salvation Church and brought peace to the continent.

So, no matter what Ghislain did in the past, this future wasn’t going to change.
Oddly, the more they organized the situation, the more tangled their thoughts became. No matter how much they thought about it, there was no clear answer.
“For now… let’s study this book a bit more. I’ll look for other materials too. There must be a reason why it was left unfinished.”
Everyone nodded at Jerome’s words. There was no other way anyway.

Just as they were all about to leave with slumped shoulders, a commotion erupted outside.
Crash!
A knight who had been guarding Ghislain’s side burst in, shouting.
“Dark! Dark suddenly showed up! He said he has something to say please, quickly, the Chief Overseer or the Head Steward, anyone—!”

They were all in such a rush that they burst through the wall as they moved.
“Wait for meeeeee!”
Only Claude was riding on Wendy’s back.
