Chapter 19: Preparing for the Competition
TL: Enuma ID
The doorbell rang.
It was Wednesday afternoon. There were no other plans.
Han So-young opened the front door.
Kim Yo-han stood there.
E n ûm̂а . і̆ d
A black coat. In one hand he held a convenience store bag.
"P-Professor? There's no lesson today, though......"

"I was just passing by."
Passing by.
Hongdae to the officetel in Mapo-gu was not the kind of distance anyone just passed by.
So-young thought it, but she didn't say so.
Еńu m̂ ă
"Come in."
Kim Yo-han stepped inside.
A cramped entryway. Lee Jun's sneakers sat on top of the shoe cabinet. There was paint on the sneakers too.
Kim Yo-han held out the convenience store bag to So-young.

"Here, put these in the fridge."
So-young took the bag and looked inside.
W̄ēb́ ňov е l Éñ ů m̃а
Energy bars. Single-serving packs of nuts. Banana milk. Small cheeses.
Things that kept easily and could be eaten without much fuss, even with dirty hands.
"When you're painting, you forget to eat. I was the same way.
At times like that, it helps to have something like this within reach. Something you can eat without setting down the brush."
So-young paused, holding the bag.
This man had picked these out one by one at a convenience store. Thinking about what to feed a five-year-old when he got hungry in the middle of painting.

It seemed out of character, and yet somehow it fit.
"......Thank you."
"Where's Jun?"
"In his room. Painting......"
"Painting, of course."
Kim Yo-han walked toward the bedroom. So-young followed.
Е̃ǹ u m а . i̇d̀
The bedroom door was open.
Lee Jun sat in front of a canvas laid out on the floor.

The 'Sky' painting. He was applying the fourth layer.
Kim Yo-han stood in the doorway and looked into the room.
It was his first time. Setting foot in this room.
The things he'd only seen in photos were here in the flesh.
Еṅ u m̄_а
Canvases stood propped along the wall.
The Starry Night. Water Lilies. 'Alley0'. 'Aquarium'. 'Mountain', with its negative space.
And 'Sky'.
The smell of linseed oil filled the cramped room.

Between the single bed and the canvases, there was hardly room to step.
The palette lay on the floor. The paint was wrapped in plastic film, and the brushes were soaking in a bottle of turpentine.

The tools were properly cared for.
Kim Yo-han stepped into the room.
Lee Jun turned around.
"Teacher?"
"Keep going. Don't stop."
Lee Jun picked up his brush again.

Kim Yo-han being there made him self-conscious, but his teacher had told him to keep going.
Kim Yo-han stood before the wall and examined the canvases one by one.
The photos and the real things were different.
The first. The Starry Night.
The first thing he'd painted when he first picked up oils.
It was clumsy. He hadn't been able to control the paint.
Ѐ n̆ùm̊ a
But it was a painting he'd done alone, with no one to teach him.
Even setting aside that he was five, this was special.

The swirls were turning. The direction of the brushstrokes was alive.
It was hard to believe such a result had come from working alone.
He could see what the photos had missed. The thickness of the paint.
The center of each swirl was the thickest. Where the energy gathered.
Е n̈ ŭ_m̊ а
Whether the boy had meant to or not, the result was that the thickness of the paint created the density of the energy.
Kim Yo-han ran a finger over the surface of the paint. It had hardened.
It was rough and uneven.
He nodded and moved on to the next.

Water Lilies.
A painting that expressed the depth of water through thickness. He'd seen it in photos too.
Еň u m а̊ . і̇d
The real thing was different. Where the paint was thin, the gesso of the canvas showed faintly through.
That faint showing-through created the transparency of the water's surface. Something a photo could never capture.
Next. 'Alley'.
The alley in front of the Sashimi Restaurant back in Busan, painted from memory.
There was a boundary between light and shade. The left side was bright, the right side dark.
Next. 'Aquarium'.

The thickness of the paint, the depth of the water.
This had looked good in photos, but seeing it in the flesh, it was clearly more intense.
A white dot dabbed onto a fish's scales. A reflection of light.
Next. 'Mountain', with its negative space.
Kim Yo-han paused for a moment in front of this one.
The mountain on the left. An edge that thinned into translucence and vanished. The white on the right.

A single bird marked in Conté.
This was the painting that had struck him most when he'd seen the photos.

Seen in person, the white of the negative space was different.
The gesso of the canvas caught the light in the room and shimmered faintly.
The white above the mountain was light; the white below it was still.
The same white, yet it looked different depending on the angle of the light.
Ŵе b̄ ñ о̄ v ѐl̇ Еn ūm̊ а̊
"Where does the light in this room come from?"
Kim Yo-han asked So-young.
"That window over there. In the afternoon, the light comes in from over there."
Kim Yo-han nodded.

This child had painted in this room, under this light.
Once he knew the direction of the light, he could understand why the paintings had turned out as they did.
Ên̄ũm̊ а̌ . іd
The last. 'Sky'.
The one he's painting right now.
Kim Yo-han crouched down in front of the painting, beside Lee Jun.
A still sky. Clouds.
The bright parts of the clouds rose up in thick paint.
Right now, the afternoon light in the room was touching that paint.

It was really glowing.
A small black silhouette at the bottom.
Two white eyes were looking up at the sky.
"What's this?"
Kim Yo-han asked Lee Jun.
Lee Jun stopped his brush and turned around.
Eňu m а̃ .íd̂
"My friend."
Kim Yo-han looked at the silhouette again.

A black shape. Two white dots.
It looked like some kind of character, and also like a shadow.
"This isn't a copy."
"No. It's the sky I saw."

"And the clouds?"
"I saw them through this window."
"And the thing down here?"
"Someone who watches the sky for me."

Kim Yo-han stared at the painting for a long while.
Something about it was different from the other canvases.
W̆е̂.b́n̊о́v ӗ l E n̄ ũ ṁ a
This is the first painting the child has done entirely on his own, not copying anything.
Kim Yo-han could tell instinctively.
A copy held a tension toward its original. The strain of trying to reproduce it well.
This painting had none of that.
It was at ease. The ease of a child who'd painted his own sky in his own room.
Kim Yo-han stood up.

He spoke to So-young.
"Could I trouble you for a cup of tea?"
"Oh, yes. Would coffee be okay?"
"Anything's fine."
Anything's fine. Somehow, she thought, that sounded just like Jun.
So-young went to the kitchen.

Kim Yo-han sat down beside Lee Jun. On the floor.
"Let's talk about the competition."

Lee Jun set down his brush and looked at Kim Yo-han.
"There's a National Children's Art Competition hosted by the Korean Art Association. The submission deadline is two months from now."
"What's a submission?"
"It means sending in a painting. A finished one. The judges look at the paintings and rank them."
En û mа .i d
Lee Jun nodded.
"We'll enter one of your paintings. If you take first place, there's prize money."
[......!]
The Shadow caught its breath.

"Which painting?"
"That's what I came to decide today."

Kim Yo-han looked at the canvases on the wall.
"Pick one of those."
Lee Jun looked at the canvases too.
His own paintings. The ones he'd painted since coming to Seoul.
[So the time has finally come.]
The Shadow said. Its voice was trembling.

"The way I see it, there are three candidates."
Kim Yo-han pointed with a finger.
"'Aquarium'. The negative-space 'Mountain'. 'Sky'."
The Starry Night, Water Lilies, and 'Alley' were left out.
"Those three are no good?"
"The Starry Night is a copy of Van Gogh. No matter how well it's painted, a copy is a copy. It's not your painting."
Е̂n u m̆a ..і̊ d̆
Lee Jun nodded.
It's not my painting. He was right.
Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.
"Water Lilies is too conscious of Monet. And 'Alley' is closer to a study."
"What about 'Aquarium'?"
"'Aquarium' is yours. You painted something you observed yourself. Expressing the depth of water through the thickness of paint, that's your own invention. This one could do well at a competition."
Kim Yo-han pointed to the next painting.
W̌е b n̈ о̄_v̂ еl Е̃n̄úm̈a
"The negative-space 'Mountain'. Using negative space in an oil painting is original. An attempt to blend Korean painting and Western painting. There are bound to be judges who'd rate this highly."
And the last.
"'Sky'."
Kim Yo-han stood before the 'Sky' painting again.

"This isn't a copy. It's the first thing you painted with your own eyes and your own hands. It shows."
Lee Jun looked at the canvases.

'Aquarium'. The negative-space 'Mountain'. 'Sky'.
"Which one do you like, Teacher?"
"My opinion doesn't matter. You're the one going to the competition."
Lee Jun looked from one painting to the next.
[Jun.]
The Shadow said quietly.

['Aquarium' is technique. It's well painted. Proof that you understand the materiality of your tools.
The negative-space 'Mountain' is an experiment. It shows you're trying something new.
'Sky' is......]
The Shadow paused for a moment.
['Sky' shows who you are right now.]
Lee Jun looked at the 'Sky' painting.

The clouds were glowing. A small shadow stood at the bottom.
"'Sky'."

Kim Yo-han looked at Lee Jun.
"Why?"
"Because this one's really my painting."
The corner of Kim Yo-han's mouth lifted faintly.

"Good answer."
So-young brought the coffee.
Kim Yo-han took the cup and drank a sip.
"But."

He said, setting down the cup.
"As it is now, it won't do."
Ě n um а
Lee Jun's head moved slightly.
"It's not finished yet. The underside of the clouds is weak, the upper sky lacks depth. And the area around the silhouette hasn't been cleaned up either."
These were all things Lee Jun already knew.
Things he'd looked at every day and felt fell short.
"And it's small."
"The size?"

"This canvas is a six-ho. That's small for a competition entry. People usually submit somewhere between ten-ho and twenty-ho. The judges look at hundreds of pieces, and a small painting doesn't catch the eye."
Lee Jun looked at the canvas again. Six-ho. Forty-one by thirty-two centimeters.
When he thought of a big painting, Lee Jun pictured Monet's Water Lilies. The huge painting that had filled an entire wall.
Next to a painting that size, it was no wonder one like this wouldn't catch the eye.
"Repaint it on a bigger canvas."
Kim Yo-han spread his arms to show roughly how big.
É nú m̄ӑ .î d_
"Fifteen-ho. Based on this painting. The same sky, but bigger, deeper, more finished."
Lee Jun nodded.

[Fifteen-ho is almost double. With more space, you can paint the clouds bigger too. And the gradation of the sky can be more natural.]
The Shadow was already calculating.
"Two months until the deadline. Is that enough?"
Kim Yo-han asked.
W̄ éḃno v̇ е́l̆ E nůmа
Lee Jun looked at the 'Sky' painting on the wall.
Two months. This painting, bigger and deeper.
"It's enough."
Kim Yo-han finished his coffee and stood up.

"I'll get the canvas ready. Fifteen-ho. I'll bring it to the next lesson, so take it home with you."
"Thank you."

So-young saw him to the door.
As he put on his shoes, Kim Yo-han spoke to So-young.
"Han So-young ssi."
"Yes."
"The entry will list recommenders. My name, and the name of a director of the Korean Art Association."
So-young's eyes widened.

"A director of the Art Association?"
"A man named Park Sang-hoon. I added him myself. So the work won't be at a disadvantage in the judging."
So-young was at a loss for words.
The professor was doing all this for them.
"In return, though."
Kim Yo-han said, opening the front door.
W̌ѐbn ŏ vе l̀ Еn u ḿӓ
"Let this child give it everything he has. Feed him well, let him sleep well, get him out of the house. So he has no regrets about his first competition."
"Yes. I'll do that."

The door closed.
So-young returned to the bedroom.
Lee Jun had already spread his sketchbook open and was drawing something with a pencil.
He was working out the composition for the fifteen-ho canvas.
É nuṁ a ..i̇ d́
The sky. The clouds. And the shadow below.
The same painting, but a wider sky.
More clouds.
A deeper blue.

[You'll need to rework the composition. Going from six-ho to fifteen-ho changes the proportions.
Give the sky more weight. Push the clouds higher so it looks wider.]
W̃ е bn̂ ӧ vеl̂ Еn̄ǔ mã
The Shadow chimed in from beside him. It was more excited than usual.
[And the silhouette. At six-ho it was so small you could barely tell what it was.
At fifteen-ho you can make it a little bigger. Just a little. It still has to be small.
Because it's a small being looking up at a big sky.]
Lee Jun nodded and laid out the composition in his sketchbook.
The pencil moved fast.

One, two, three composition sketches went down in an instant.
He liked the third one best.
The sky took up three-quarters of the canvas.
A composition with a sliver of ground in the bottom quarter, and a small silhouette standing at its edge.
[Good. The ratio of sky to ground is good.
But how are you going to handle the ground? At six-ho you left it as negative space.]
W е̇b̌n о v́ е́l Ѐ n um̆ä
Lee Jun thought.
At six-ho he'd left the bottom empty. Bare white gesso.

What about at fifteen-ho?
Grass.
It would be good to have grass.
Grass swaying in the wind.
Е̇ ñum̈а̄. î ď
Something Lee Jun had seen outside came back to him.
The lawn he'd seen at the park with Ji-su noona. Grass bending flat in the wind.
"I want to add grass."
[Grass?]
Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.
"Down at the bottom. Grass swaying in the wind. And the shadow standing in the middle of it."
[......Nice.]
Е̃n̄ ŭ ḿ а
The Shadow said.
[The sky is still, the grass moves in the wind, and a being standing in between.
There's more of a story to it than the six-ho had.]
Lee Jun drew the grass in with his pencil.
Several short lines at the bottom. Tilted to one side. The direction of the wind.
A small black silhouette among them. Two white eyes.

He looked at the composition in the sketchbook for a long while.
[Will two months be enough?]
"It will."
A light flickered to life in Lee Jun's eyes.
