Chapter 28: The Things Worth Cherishing

TL: Enuma ID

Morning.

Lee Jun stood before the easel.

He begins the routine he repeats every day.

He sets the palette down on the table.

Ě n um̌ а

He squeezed out Ultramarine Blue. A little.

He mixed in turpentine. A lot. Almost like water.

It's repetition, but it isn't.

Today's color is different from yesterday's.

Because with each layer that builds up, the color grows deeper.

He took up the brush.

Еǹü m̆ a.id́

He set it to the canvas.

Left to right. Top to bottom.

Fast. Light. Even.

In a few minutes, today's layer was down.

Lee Jun stepped back and looked at the canvas.

At first he couldn't see any change.

Ê num̃a

Even though he laid down pale blue every day, it looked the same as the day before.

But at some point it started to change.

The color deepened. The surface was still pale blue, but something was rising up from within.

Now he could see it clearly.

This blue was not a single blue.

The layers laid down underneath showed through from below, so there was blue inside the blue.

It was deep.

Like the red of Rothko's that he'd seen at the Leeum.

The blue was glowing from within.

[...It's getting better.]

The Shadow looked at the canvas too, and said,

[Honestly, at first I was nervous. Because nothing looked like it was changing.

Ѐ ńu mȧ. іd_

But now that it's building up, it's really starting to come through. The depth.]

Lee Jun nodded.

[The wait paid off.]

He dipped the brush in turpentine. Wiped it. Wrapped the leftover paint on the palette in plastic wrap.

The morning's work was done.

Now it was time to wait.

Е̇ n ù mа̃ ..ї d̄

Until evening.

*

Lee Jun opened his sketchbook and sat down on the floor.

Three objects sat on the table.

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

A glass of water. An apple. A tube of paint.

It was the new homework Kim Yo-han seonsaengnim had given him.

Ë ǹ ů mа

"Pick any three things from around the house. Set them down so they overlap, and draw them. Make it clear which one's in front and which is behind."

He arranged the objects on the table.

The glass of water at the very front.

The apple behind it. Half hidden.

The tube of paint at the very back. Sticking out beside the apple.

[The glass is see-through. You have to draw it so the apple behind it shows through the glass.]

the Shadow said.

He looked at the glass. It was half full of water.

Through the glass, the apple was visible. But the apple looked distorted because of the water.

"The apple's squished."

[Because the water bends the light. That's refraction. When you look through water, what's behind it looks distorted.]

Refraction. The phenomenon where an object looks bent as it passes through water.

W̌е b nǒ v̂еl̈ Еn̊ǔ m а́

It had been the same when he drew the fish in the tank. He hadn't known what the phenomenon was, but he'd drawn it just as he saw it.

[You have to draw that properly. The way the apple behind the glass comes out distorted. That's the charm of this still life.]

Lee Jun picked up the pencil.

The glass first. An ellipse for the top, two straight lines for the body. The bottom slightly rounded.

It was the order Kim Yo-han had taught him. The overall shape first.

Then the apple. The apple cut off halfway behind the glass.

W̆ еb̌nо̌.v̌ el̄ Ĕn u m ǎ

The right half was the ordinary apple, the left half the apple seen through the glass.

[You have to draw the apple seen through the glass separately. Its shape is different from the apple outside it. Because of the water.]

Lee Jun nodded.

First he drew the apple visible inside the glass separately. A bit bigger than the apple outside, a bit higher up.

[Good. That's real observation. Not drawing what you know, but drawing what you see.]

Last, the tube of paint.

Ën̂ům̀ӓ

At the very back. Sticking out beside the apple.

He drew the tube. A long shape. The cap end pointing up.

The bottom half was hidden behind the apple, out of sight.

[Look at the shadow.]

The Shadow pointed at the shadow.

The glass's shadow lay tilted across the table.

But there was light inside that shadow. Light that had passed through the water in the glass was making a bright spot on the table.

"There's light inside the shadow."

[The water worked like a lens. It focuses the light, so a bright spot forms inside the dark shadow.]

Lee Jun cocked his head.

He doesn't really understand the principle. But he could see it.

Enuma ID

He drew it just as he saw it. He shaded the glass's shadow in three levels of chiaroscuro, and left a round bright area inside it.

Ẅ е̂b̂ n̂o v̂_е̂l Е́ n̊ ù m̀ a

Light within the shadow.

Brightness within the dark.

[...Well observed.]

The Shadow's voice was soft.

Lee Jun kept the pencil moving.

The apple's chiaroscuro. The light was coming from the right. The left is dark. From level two to level four.

Eñ uḿ а̌_

The tube's reflected light. The metal part was catching the light. A single bright spot.

He drew as carefully as he could. There was plenty of time.

Thirty minutes passed.

Lee Jun looked down at the sketchbook.

A glass of water, an apple, a tube of paint.

The three overlapped. Front and back were distinct.

Е ñu ḿ ӓ

The glass transparent, the apple solid, the tube slender.

It was decent enough.

It was different from drawing a single apple.

With several objects, the world became complicated.

Overlapping, blocking, showing through, warping.

But that complexity was fun.

[All done?]

"Not yet. The shadow needs a little more."

Lee Jun refined the shadows on the table.

There was a spot where the apple's shadow and the glass's shadow overlapped. That was the darkest place.

Level five.

The darkest level.

Еn̈ū ṁа̄

He stood the pencil upright and pressed down, hard, again and again.

The overlapping shadow. The deepest point.

Make the dark places truly dark. Only then does the light come alive.

[Good. Perfect.]

The Shadow nodded. Then it withdrew quietly.

It was a sketch Lee Jun had completed on his own.

The arrangement, the observation, the chiaroscuro.

Even the refraction of the water.

The Shadow had only given hints.

Everything else, this child's own eyes and hands had done.

[.......]

The Shadow watched that small back without a word.

After lunch.

He looked at the canvas on the easel.

The layer he'd laid down that morning was drying. Not yet.

He opened the sketchbook again.

He decided to draw one more still life. With a different arrangement.

This time the apple in front, the glass behind, the tube of paint laid on its side beside them.

[A different composition from before.]

"Same things, but if you place them differently, the picture changes too."

[Right. That's composition. The same objects tell a different story depending on where you put them.]

Lee Jun picked up the pencil.

This time the Shadow said nothing.

Ẽ n u ṁ а̂

It only watched.

Lee Jun drew the apple first. A big ellipse. Big, because it's in front.

The glass behind. Small. Half hidden by the apple.

The tube to the side. Lying flat. Long and thin.

He put in the chiaroscuro. After checking the direction of the light.

The light came from the window. From the left.

Е́ n úm̆a .î d́

The right was dark. The opposite of before.

Lee Jun shifted the chiaroscuro naturally.

The light had changed, so the shadows changed too.

[When the direction of the light changes, the whole picture changes. Well observed.]

The Shadow said only that, and went quiet again.

In twenty minutes he finished the second still life.

W̄е b ň о̄v́ е l Е̄ńumȧ

He turned the page.

He started on a third.

This time he pulled the tube of paint to the front.

[...Haha.]

The Shadow laughed.

[Don't you get bored?]

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

"I don't get bored."

[Right. If you don't get bored, keep at it. That's a blessing too.]

Lee Jun moved the pencil.

The same objects. A different composition. Different light. A different picture.

Every time, it was new.

Afternoon.

At last the canvas was dry.

Lee Jun stood before the easel again.

Today's second layer.

Enuma ID

He mixed a single drop of Prussian Blue into the Ultramarine.

Just a little. Almost invisibly.

W̃e̊ b n̄ о̂v.е l̃ Ё n̊ūm̆а̀

At some point he'd started changing the color.

At first he'd laid down nothing but pure Ultramarine, but now he had to make the upper part deeper.

The top of the sky is dark.

The bottom is bright.

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

That change has to be built up in layers.

The bottom half, only Ultramarine.

Е̌ ň u ma.іḋ

The top half, Ultramarine with Prussian Blue mixed in.

No boundary can show. It has to flow naturally.

Lee Jun painted from the bottom up. Pure Ultramarine.

Around the middle, he dipped the brush into the palette again. The side with a touch of Prussian Blue mixed in.

He painted his way up.

At the boundary he blended the strokes softly. Where the bottom and top met.

Gently. Easing off the pressure. Until not even a brushstroke remained.

[So the boundary doesn't show. There can't be a line in the sky.]

Lee Jun nodded and moved the brush.

A few minutes later.

Lee Jun stepped back and looked.

The top was a little, just a little, deeper.

W е bn̈оve̊ľ Е̇n ú m а̊

With one layer, the difference was barely visible.

But if he repeated this every day, it would change.

The depth that time creates.

Today, too, he took a step forward.

He cleaned the brush. Tidied the palette.

Today's work, too, was done.

Ẃ е b n̊о v е̊ l Ӗ n.um а

Lee Jun sat down on the floor and looked up at the canvas.

A blue canvas.

There was still nothing on it. No clouds, no grass, no silhouettes.

It was just blue, nothing more.

Lee Jun gazed quietly at the canvas, then spoke.

"Another... thirty times? Would that... be enough?"

We b̀ ň о vе̊l Ӗn̊ ūm̆ á

The first hint of anxiety he'd shown.

He'd seen Rothko's painting and tried to copy it, but Lee Jun had no certainty.

He'd followed it purely on the wish to paint like that. A path walked for the first time, with no practice. There was no way to know whether the result would match what he'd pictured.

A memory from long ago surfaced.

The memory of drawing on the wall with lipstick. The memory of his mom screaming and of himself crying. The memory of being scolded by his mom.

Now is different from then. He's drawing a proper picture with proper tools.

But the notion that 'he mustn't draw badly' was lodged like a thorn deep in Lee Jun's chest.

Even young Lee Jun knew the fear of failure.

[You're doing well.]

the Shadow said.

[There's no need to make it complicated. All you have to do is finish the painting you have in your head.

Whether it comes out good or bad doesn't matter. Just paint your own painting.

Ѐ n u m а́.id

The grown-ups will handle the rest.]

"Yeah."

His anxiety eased a little.

[And...]

The Shadow let a beat pass, then went on.

[Remember this. Your painting isn't yours alone.]

Е ńu m ā .і d

Lee Jun tilted his head.

[Look around you.]

The Shadow's white eyes swept around the room.

[This easel. That man Park Sang-hoon bought it for you. The table, too. The canvas, too.]

"Yeah."

[That air purifier. That was him too.]

W е̌ b n̄о vе̊l̊ Е̊n u m̃а̊

"Yeah."

[The paint. The Ultramarine you're using right now. It was bought with money your parents sent.]

Lee Jun looked at the tube of paint on the table.

[There's your teacher, Kim Yo-han.

How to draw a straight line, how to draw an ellipse, how to break down chiaroscuro. He taught you all of it.

You can draw an apple properly now. That's partly your talent, but it's only possible because someone taught you.]

Lee Jun listened quietly.

[There's your aunt, too. The one who brought you here from Busan. The one who cooks for you every day and, even when she's racing a deadline, looks after you so you can paint.]

"......."

[Ji-su noona. Even though she's busy, she comes twice a week to take you outside. Walking with her, you saw the world, and you painted the wind.]

Lee Jun thought back to the times they'd sat side by side in the park, drawing.

[Even the burger company said it would help. You don't have to worry about paint anymore.]

W е̃ b_ńо v̆.е̄ l Ѐṅùm̄ӑ

The Shadow paused for a moment.

The two white eyes looked at the canvas.

At the blue piled up layer on layer.

The two white eyes drooped downward.

[Me...]

The voice grew low.

Ë n̈ũ m̄а̀.і d

[These are all things I never had.]

Lee Jun looked at the Shadow.

[You're loved by so many people. There are people who help you, people who truly care about you.

You might not realize yet just how precious that is.]

The Shadow was quieter than usual.

Its usual excitement was gone. It was that solemn voice from when they'd seen Rothko at the Leeum.

Е̇n u̇ m̄а. і̌d

[Treasure these things. Be grateful for them. Don't treat everything you've been given as a given.]

Lee Jun listened quietly.

He remembered something he himself had said in front of the grown-ups.

'When you have to earn money with your paintings but you can't paint. When your family goes hungry because of it. They say that's when a painter is saddest.'

That was something he'd heard from the Shadow.

Lee Jun opened his mouth.

"There's one more."

[Hm?]

"I've got the Shadow, too."

[What?]

"The things I have. I've got the Shadow, too."

The Shadow's white eyes turned to Lee Jun.

Én̂ ŭ m̂а̇

"The Shadow's the one who taught me the most.

How to paint a swirl. How to use paint. How to see the light.

The Shadow taught me all of it."

[.......]

"Thank you."

The Shadow said nothing.

The white eyes trembled, then closed.

[...Yeah.]

Barely a word.

[Yeah. That's right. You've had me, too.]

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

Then it looked at the canvas again.

[So do well. Your painting is possible because those people are there.

Ẅ е́bn̄ о̀v̊ e l̊ Е́ ñ u m̈а́

Because I'm here, your aunt's here, your parents are here, your teacher's here.

Always remember. Your painting isn't yours alone.]

Lee Jun nodded.

[And someday, when you make it, pay them back. That's the right thing for a painter to do.]

"Pay them back?"

[Yeah. Make a lot of money and buy your aunt a nice house. Your parents too. Get your teacher a nice gift, too. And as for Mr. Park Sang-hoon...]

The Shadow thought for a moment.

[That one will look after himself, so never mind him.]

Lee Jun nodded, as if he understood.
