Chapter 33: Aunt's Portrait
TL: Enuma ID
A few days after Professor Kim Yo-han took the competition entry away.
Park Sang-hoon paid a visit to Han So-young's apartment.
Both arms loaded down with boxes.
"Delivery's here!"
Е ṅ um̌а̌
He set three heavy boxes down in the entryway.
So-young asked, startled.

"What is it? All of this?"
"Supplies from the McKing Burger scholarship program. This is the first batch."
Park Sang-hoon tore open the biggest box.
Inside were several canvases.
Е̄ n̆ŭm а̄
Two 15-ho, two 20-ho, and one 30-ho.
They were big. The largest, the 30-ho, was about as long as Lee Jun was tall.
The other boxes held painting supplies too.
Oil paints. Winsor & Newton, Artist grade. The basic twelve-color set, plus six extra colors.

Linseed oil. Turpentine. A palette knife. A palette. Several brushes.
"Wow. Is this all of it?"
Е́ńù m̈ а̀. іd
"No, this is just the first round, what I picked out and ordered myself.
Once it's used up, you just request more. Within an annual limit of three million won."
"My goodness. Three million won, we couldn't even get through that in a year."
"Haha. That limit is really just nominal. As long as you don't, say, resell what you've been given, they'll likely keep supplying you with no cap at all."
So-young peered into the box.
The new paints sparkled and gleamed.

"Aren't these all expensive?"
Park Sang-hoon pushed his glasses up and answered smugly.
"When a big company's footing the bill for once, you take the expensive stuff. If better paints mean better paintings, the sponsor gets something out of it too."
Lee Jun, who'd been painting in his room, heard the noise and came out.
"Hello, Park seonsaengnim."
"That's right. This teacher brought you a present."

Lee Jun looked inside the box. His eyes went wide.
"Whoa."

He tried to lift a canvas out of the box.
But the canvas was bigger than he was.
"Hey, hey, careful."
Park Sang-hoon quickly propped it up for him.
Е num̊ а̂ . і̊ d́
Lee Jun touched the big canvas.
Stroking it, tapping it lightly with a fingertip.
"Nice......"
He was feeling the spring of the canvas.

His aunt and Park Sang-hoon watched him with fond smiles.
"Paint too?"

"There is. Here."
Lee Jun opened the box of paints. He looked over the tubes one by one.
Cadmium Red. Cadmium Yellow. Ultramarine.
Viridian. Burnt Sienna. Ivory Black. Titanium White.
All the colors from the competition piece were there.
And new ones, besides.

Yellow Ochre. Crimson Lake. Cerulean Blue. Naples Yellow. Raw Sienna. Permanent Green.
Colors he had never used before. The competition piece had been built around blues and whites.
He examined the tube of Crimson Lake.
A red so deep it was almost frightening.
[A new color. This opens up richer expression.]
Lee Jun nodded.

He twisted the cap open a little and looked at the color.
A deep red hue. The pleasant smell of new paint.

"You like them?"
Park Sang-hoon asked.
Lee Jun nodded. He put the tube back in the box.
Park Sang-hoon handed So-young some papers.
Е̇n̆ ú m̄а̃ .і ḋ
"This is the receipt confirmation for the scholarship program. Sign here and you're done."
While So-young signed, Park Sang-hoon watched Lee Jun.
Lee Jun was already sitting on the floor, touching a canvas. He was sweeping his hand across its surface.
For days now, ever since finishing the competition painting, he'd had no canvas to work on.

The easel sat empty. He'd been doing nothing but line practice in his sketchbook.
In fact, he and his aunt had been planning to go buy a new canvas that very day.
Е̂ n̂ ů ṁ а
And then, right on cue, new canvases showed up.
Lee Jun, who usually seemed to care about nothing, was downright giddy this once.
Park Sang-hoon smiled, pleased.
It was a tiresome errand, but all of it was an investment in the future.
"Well, I'll be on my way, then."
"Thank you, Director Park."

"Oh, don't mention it. McKing Burger's the one footing the bill."
McKing Burger's sponsorship initiative meant a great deal to Park Sang-hoon as well.
For now it was only Lee Jun, but if Lee Jun, with McKing Burger behind him, delivered strong results, the program would only expand its reach.
And Park Sang-hoon, the man who had reeled in a big corporation's sponsorship, would see his standing within the association rise that much higher.
"You cute little rascal."
Park Sang-hoon gave Lee Jun's head a pat and left the apartment.

With his aunt's help, he stood a 15-ho canvas on the easel.

The rest of the boxes went under Lee Jun's bed.
A new white canvas.
For a month and a half, he'd seen nothing but blue.
One layer each day. Blue over blue. Blue over blue again.
É n̊u m̌a ..і_d́
The waiting wasn't painful. He liked the way the time stacked up, layer by layer.
But, honestly...... he wanted to paint fast.
Glazing was slow.
Lay down a layer and let it dry, lay down a layer and let it dry.

It was a technique built on patience.
Lee Jun had been patient. For a month and a half.
Ѐn̂ ǔ m̄ а ._і̇ d
That was enough of Rothko.
Now he wanted to paint something different.
A painting that wouldn't keep him waiting. A painting that appeared the instant the brush met the canvas.
[What are you going to paint this time?]
The Shadow asked.
Lee Jun looked at the white canvas.

What should he paint?
He'd painted the sky. He'd painted the clouds. The grass, too. The wind, too.
All of it landscapes.
This time he wanted to paint something new.
"A person."
[A person?]
W е̇b n̊ о́v èl̃ .Е̇ n üm̂ а
"Yeah. I want to try painting a person in oil."
[Oho, a person. Who?]

Lee Jun looked out of his room.
His aunt was tidying something up.
"Aunt."
[Your aunt?]

"Yeah. I want to paint Aunt."
[Oho. Now that's a good idea.]
The Shadow laughed.
[To paint a person, you first have to observe them.

Have you ever really looked at your aunt's face?]
Lee Jun cocked his head.
È n ů_ṁ ä
It was a face he saw every single day, and they shared the same rooms day in and day out.
But he had never looked at it 'to paint it'.
The length of her nose, the distance between her eyes, the curve of her jawline, the breadth of her forehead.
He had never looked at her while paying attention to any of that.
If he tried to paint her, he could.
But working from memory alone wasn't enough.

So Lee Jun began to observe his aunt.
Evening.
In the middle of eating, Lee Jun stared hard at So-young. Spoon still in his hand.
So-young looked up.
"What?"
"......"
Е̇ ñüm̀ a .і d̃
Lee Jun didn't answer, just looked.
At his aunt's nose. The tip of it turned up slightly.

"Jun. What's wrong? Do I have something on my face?"
So-young asked, touching her cheek.
He shook his head.
"No."

And he went back to eating.
So-young tilted her head and kept eating.
A minute later.
Lee Jun stared at So-young again.

Her eyes, this time. The skin under them was dark and dusky.
"......Jun, do you have something to say to me?"
Е́ ǹ ûṁ а
"There's a shadow under your eyes, Aunt."
"Those are dark circles! They'll be gone once my deadline's over! Stop looking!"
The next morning.
So-young came out from washing up. A towel wrapped around her head.
She was heading into her room when she found Lee Jun standing at the door, watching her.
"Jun?"

"......"
He was looking at the outline of his aunt's face.
With the towel wrapped up, the line of her forehead stood out clearly.
It was a pale, smooth forehead. Normally it was hidden behind her bangs.
"Why do you keep staring at me like that these days?"
"I'm not staring. I'm observing."

"That's the same thing!"
Lee Jun went into the room.

He opened the sketchbook. He drew something with a pencil.
So-young still didn't realize it.
That she was the model for her nephew's new painting.

Lee Jun didn't rush.
Same as imitating Rothko. It's the same process as stacking color one layer at a time.
Observing his aunt's face.
He'd seen his aunt every day, but the more he observed, the more new things appeared.

Day by day, Lee Jun gathered the data.
The same as building up one color each day.

When So-young was working on her webtoon, Lee Jun watched quietly from behind.
His aunt's profile in the monitor's glow. When she focused, a line gathered between her brows.
When So-young was on the phone, Lee Jun sat beside her and watched.
His aunt's face as she talked and laughed on the phone. Her eyes curved into half-moons.
When So-young did the dishes, Lee Jun stood by the door and watched.
His aunt's back in her apron. Her shoulders were narrow.

It was starting to bother So-young more and more.
"Jun. Really, why do you keep staring? It's been days now."
"Because I want to look at you, Aunt."
"What is it with you? Honestly."
Lee Jun had already gone back into the room.

He got down to sketching.
[For a portrait, you paint from the face down through the neck and shoulders.

You've seen Van Gogh's self-portrait? About like that.]
He decided to paint it the way the Shadow said.
First he drew his aunt's face in pencil in the sketchbook.
Face shape. Oval. Her chin was narrow.

Eyes. Slightly downturned. The lashes are long. When she laughs, they crinkle to slits.
Nose. The tip tilts up a little. It's sleek.
Mouth. When she nagged, only one corner lifted.
[Draw the neck a little longer.]

The Shadow said.
Lee Jun stopped the pencil.
E n u m а
"Why?"
[A long neck looks graceful. In a portrait, the neck is everything.]
Lee Jun thought for a moment.
Then he walked out to the living room.
So-young was sitting in a chair, looking at her phone.
Lee Jun stood next to her and looked at his aunt's neck. Hard.

"What is it now?"
"Your neck, Aunt."
"What about my neck?"
"It's not long."
"What?! Are you saying I've got a short neck?! My neck is not short!"
Lee Jun went back into the room.
Е n̂ u m̃_а
He sat down in front of the sketchbook. Then he spoke to the Shadow.
"Aunt's neck isn't that long."

[Still, it looks prettier drawn long.]
"No. Aunt's prettier the way she is."
[......]
The Shadow was at a loss for words.
Е ṅ ũm̂ а
The Shadow always painted necks long. On purpose.
That was the Shadow's way with portraits.
But it couldn't force its own method on Lee Jun.
[...All right. Paint it the way you see it.]

"Okay."
The pencil moved fast.

His aunt's face, the face he'd been studying all this while.
He drew it in the sketchbook exactly as he'd seen it.
The sketch was finished in no time.
Now he transfers it to the canvas.
Charcoal first.
He blocked in the underdrawing on the 15-ho canvas.

Not straight on. A three-quarter angle. The face turned a little to one side.
It was the way So-young looked while working on her webtoon. Head tipped a little as she gazed at the monitor.
Somehow, Lee Jun felt that was the most like his aunt of all.
[That angle works. When the light comes from one side, the chiaroscuro really lives.]
The underdrawing was done. He started laying on the oil paint right away.
He paints it himself. Mixing the colors. Carrying them to the canvas with the brush.
W̄ е́b̃ň öv̆е l̇ E̊ ňu m̊ ā
He made the skin tone first.
Titanium White. Yellow Ochre. Crimson Lake. A touch of Viridian.

He mixed them on the palette. A warm skin tone emerged.
He put the forehead down first.
[Keep the shadowed parts cool. Just a little Ultramarine.]
Lee Jun stood up, brush still in hand.
Е̂ n̂ um а̌. і d
And he peeked into his aunt's room.
His aunt was at work again today. The monitor's glow was hitting her from the left.
The right side of her face was dark. That dark part looked faintly blue.
He hurried back to the canvas.

A drop of Ultramarine into the skin tone. The skin color for the shadowed side.
On the canvas, the bright side and the dark side met.
Ẁẽ bn̆оv̂ еl̆ Е́n ù ḿ.а̀
The face took on depth. The light was coming from one side.
[Paint the eyes.]
With a fine brush. Slowly. His aunt's downturned eyes.
[Put a little more shadow under the eyes.]
"Dark circles?"
[......Yes. The dark circles.]
Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.
"Aunt said they'd disappear once her deadline was done."
[What you're painting right now is your aunt right now. And your aunt right now has dark circles.]
Lee Jun thought for a moment.
"Okay."
He laid a very thin layer of Burnt Sienna under the eyes. Just barely, with the tip of the brush.
The dark circles appeared.

The mouth. His aunt's mouth.
The mouth that hitches up at one corner when she scolds.

But Lee Jun painted a smiling mouth. Both corners turned up.
[Why are you giving her a smile?]
"Because Aunt's prettiest when she smiles."

Again the Shadow was at a loss for words.
The hair.
This took the longest.
So-young's hair was black and long. Down past her shoulders.

Black hair couldn't be painted with black.
What is black is not the color black.
Еnuḿã
He mixed Ultramarine into Ivory Black. A cold black.
Then a little Burnt Sienna. A touch of warmth.
Where the light hit, brown came through. Burnt Sienna with Yellow Ochre.
He couldn't paint the hair strand by strand.
Instead he caught it in masses. The masses the light reached, and the masses in shadow.
[You're doing it right. Hair isn't lines, it's planes.]

Lee Jun nodded and moved the brush.

The afternoon of the third day.
It was nearly finished.
Lee Jun stepped back from the easel. He looked at the canvas.
His aunt was there.

A three-quarter angle. The head tilted a little.
It was his aunt, working as she watched the monitor.

Light from the left, a soft shadow on the right.
A faint dark circle under the eyes. But the mouth is smiling.
Black hair spilled down over her shoulders.
Where the light caught it, it shone brown.

It was nothing like a landscape painting.
In the sky paintings, he'd painted nature. Sky, clouds, grass, wind.
In this one, he'd painted a person. One particular person.
The painting brimmed with information about that person.

Focused eyes. A kind mouth. The line of her gaze, the mood of the room. And even the dark circles.

[Not bad.]
The Shadow said.
[Though the neck's a bit short.]
"This is just how long Aunt's neck is."
[All right, all right.]
The Shadow still couldn't quite let it go.

Lee Jun brought his aunt in from the living room.
"What?"

"Yeah."
"My goodness."
So-young stood in front of the canvas and looked for a long while.
With the deadline keeping her busy, she hadn't even gotten a proper look at what Jun was painting.
Е nū m̀а
He'd kept staring at her face, and she'd just thought, 'What's gotten into this kid', and found it odd.
And all along he'd been painting this.
It was her own face.
Herself, at work with her eyes on the monitor. The left side of her face in the light.

The dark circles. The smiling mouth. Down to a single eyelash.
And all of it rendered prettier than she was in life.

So that was why Jun had been staring at her like that.
So-young felt like she might cry.
"You even painted my dark circles......"
"You've got dark circles lately, Aunt."
"Yeah, I do. I do."
So-young sniffled.

And as she said it she pressed both palms hard against her eyes.

Lee Jun cocked his head.
So-young looked at the canvas again.

There it was: her face as seen by a five-year-old.

"My Jun, you painted it so well."
