Lee Jun's aunt picked out his clothes.
Normally she just threw anything on him, but today she put some thought into it.

A little compact car was parked in front of the house.

Lee Jun sat in the back seat, next to his aunt.
The car pulled onto the highway.
The whole way there, his aunt and Ji-su talked nonstop.
"Unnie, I watched the awards ceremony broadcast too. My heart honestly nearly stopped, I swear."

The buildings thinned out and the trees multiplied. It felt like the drive to Yangpyeong.
"Jun, do you remember painting on the stage at the awards ceremony?"

"Yeah."
"Weren't you scared? There were so many people."
Lee Jun thought for a moment, then said,

"That's our Jun, all right."
His aunt smoothed Lee Jun's hair.

The parking lot alone was enormous. Cars were parked as far as the eye could see.

He looked around.
An enormously wide parking lot. More cars than he could count.

Holding his aunt's hand, they walked a little way, and the entrance came into view.
A big, showy arch.
Animal statues stood on either side. An elephant and a giraffe.

So-young took out three passes and scanned them at the gate.
Once they were inside, Lee Jun's eyes went round and round.
Shops lined both sides.
A place selling balloons, a place making cotton candy, a person in a mascot costume waving.

A rainbow-colored line painted on the ground. Water shot up from a fountain.
And far off in the distance, something huge was turning slowly.
Lee Jun pointed at it.
"What's that?"

"There are lots of people, so don't let go of Aunt's hand. It'll be a disaster if you get lost."

His aunt on the left, Ji-su noona on the right.
A hand held his on either side.
There were a lot of people.
They came in family groups. There were plenty of parents who'd brought their children.
There were children as small as Lee Jun, and children bigger than him.

"Because it's an amusement park."

Lee Jun climbed onto a white horse among them.
His aunt held on beside him.
Music started to play.
The horse began to move up and down. The platform turned slowly.
"Wow, wow."
It was Lee Jun's first time on a ride, and he was flustered.

The scenery around him wheeled by.
People, shops, trees, sky. Round and round.
Holding the pole, Lee Jun looked all around.
With each turn, what he saw changed. The same scenery, but the angle shifted.

His aunt asked, riding another horse beside him.

"What is?"
"I'm not moving, but the world is."
His aunt laughed.

Ji-su was riding a horse on the other side.
She snapped pictures of Lee Jun with her phone.
"Jun, look over here!"

From the other side, his aunt took a picture.
After they got off the carousel.
Next was the bumper cars.
"Bumper cars?"
"See those cars? You get to ride in one and drive it, Jun."

Adults and kids alike were riding the little cars and crashing into each other every which way.
Even though they kept colliding, they all seemed to be having a great time, laughing.

The bumper cars had a height limit for children.

Lee Jun cleared the height limit by a hair.

"Jun, run for it!"
There was no room to escape. He was pinned from both sides.
He cranked the wheel and hit the pedal. He barely broke free.

This time Lee Jun swung around and drove straight at his aunt's car.

"Aaah!"
His aunt screamed. Louder than Lee Jun.
Lee Jun didn't stop. He reversed, then hit the pedal again.

The ending bell rang.
They got out of the cars.

They ate at the food court. It was crowded, so getting a seat was hard.
A hot dog for Lee Jun. Udon for his aunt. Tteokbokki for Ji-su.

Each of them carried their food over and sat down.
His aunt and Ji-su, with Lee Jun between them.
"Jun, is it good?"
"Yeah."

"Want to try some udon?"
"What about the tteokbokki?"
"Want more ketchup?"

Looking at the ketchup on his hot dog made him think of painting.

"So, Ji-su. Is your graduation piece coming along?"

"Really? Before, you said it wasn't working out."
At So-young's words, Ji-su smiled a little bashfully.

"Mm-hmm."
"But Jun just paints whatever he wants to paint. If the sky's pretty, he paints the sky, and if he loves his aunt, he paints his aunt. There's no reason to it. He just paints whatever catches his eye, whatever he feels like painting, moment to moment."

Ji-su looked at Lee Jun.
Lee Jun was focused on his hot dog.

"So what did you decide to paint?"
Ji-su smiled sheepishly.
"It's still a secret. Come see it at the graduation exhibition, unnie. It'll be this summer."

"Of course I'll come!"
His aunt took Ji-su's hand.
"But it's a shame. Taking Jun out is coming to an end."
"I know. Kindergarten starts next week."

Lee Jun finished his hot dog and looked back and forth between the two of them.

"Yeah. I want to see your paintings, noona."
Ji-su couldn't answer.
For some reason, her chest tightened.

Ji-su pressed her lips together and turned her head away.
"......Ji-su, are you crying?"

Lee Jun linked pinkies with Ji-su noona.

After they finished eating, the first ride of the afternoon.
A mini train.
It was a train that circled the whole park.
The three of them sat side by side in one car. Lee Jun in the middle.

The train began to move slowly.
It crossed a bridge and passed between the trees. It passed beside a pond.

Then it went into a tunnel.
Inside the tunnel it was dark as night. Star-shaped lights twinkled on the ceiling.
Lee Jun looked up.
"Stars."
They were fake stars made of LED bulbs.
But in the dark tunnel, they twinkled.

So-young and Ji-su liked it even more.
They came out of the tunnel. Sunlight poured down.
Lee Jun squinted.
Light flooded his eyes.
Light was pouring through the leaves. Catching the light, the leaves glowed yellow-green.

Lee Jun's hand twitched.

He had no sketchbook. He hadn't brought it today.
No painting today.
Lee Jun opened his eyes wide. To take it in with his eyes instead.
The light pouring through the leaves. A color somewhere between yellow-green and yellow.

He fixed it in his memory. He meant to paint it later.
His aunt saw the look on Lee Jun's face.
"Jun. Do you maybe want to paint?"
"No."

Ji-su laughed too.
The last one was the Ferris wheel.
The three of them boarded one cabin and rose slowly.
The ground fell away beneath them. The people grew small.
Lee Jun pressed his nose to the glass and looked out.
Before he knew it, they were halfway up.

It was high. He could see all of Eden Land.
"Jun. If you move too much it rocks. Ji-su noona's getting scared."
"Okay."
Ji-su sat curled up, trembling all over.
"I, I have a fear of heights......."
"You should've said something."

"I thought I'd be fine if I rode with you."
So-young gave a wry smile.

"There's the carousel."
The carousel they'd ridden earlier was over there. The bumper cars were in view too. The mini train's track wound in a big loop around the park.
Beyond it, he could see mountains. He could see the sky.
The sun was sinking. It hadn't set yet, but the sky was slowly beginning to take on a scarlet tint.

"Wow."
Lee Jun marveled. The color of the sky was beautiful.
Eden Land, seen from up high. Everything nestled close together.
"It's high."

His aunt leaned over beside Lee Jun and looked out with him.
"It really is pretty."
Ji-su carefully peeked out the window on the other side too.
"Eep!"
And then curled back up in her seat.
"You can even see the river over there."

When the Ferris wheel reached the very top.
A slight breeze blew. The cabin swayed lightly.
"Oh God!"
Ji-su curled up even smaller.
So-young hugged Lee Jun's shoulders.
Lee Jun looked up at the sky through the clear ceiling.

The sky looked different from up here.
There were no buildings. No power lines either.

The sky was round. It spread out in every direction.
A wide-open, unbroken sky. It was a new sensation.
"Thinking about painting again?"
His aunt asked.

Lee Jun didn't nod.
Instead, looking out the window, he said quietly,
"I'll paint it tomorrow."
"Okay."

The Ferris wheel began to move again.
It descended slowly.

The people grew big again. The ground came closer.
The sun sank lower. As much as the sky darkened, Eden Land's lights grew brighter.
"Shall we head home now?"
They walked toward the exit. On the way, they bought a cotton candy.
Lee Jun's steps had slowed. His legs were tired.
"Jun, want me to carry you on my back?"

"Nuh-uh. I'm okay."
He wasn't okay. But he walked.
Ji-su took Lee Jun's left hand, and his aunt took his right.
A hand held his on either side. Just like when they'd come in that morning.
"Jun."

"Yeah."
"Did you have fun?"

Lee Jun thought about it.
On the carousel, the world had spun. In the bumper cars, they'd crashed with thud after thud. On the train, he'd seen stars. On the Ferris wheel, he'd climbed up into the sky.
The time spent waiting to ride had been longer than the time actually spent riding.
But even the waiting had been fun. Because his aunt and noona were there.

"It was fun."
"Do you want to come again?"
"Yeah."
"Next time, let's come with Mom and Dad too."

It was excuse enough to come back to the amusement park again.
In the car on the way home.
The moment Lee Jun got into the back seat, he fell asleep.
Still clutching the cotton candy stick. The cotton candy had already melted away to nothing.
His aunt slipped the stick out of Lee Jun's hand and tucked a blanket over him.
"Jun's asleep."

Lee Jun was asleep. His mouth slightly open.
He had a happy look on his face.
The two of them smiled quietly.
