Chapter 69: Outdoor Class

TL: Enuma ID

5 a.m.

So-young's alarm went off. Two hours earlier than usual.

Today was the day of the outdoor class.

She had to pack Jun's lunch.

Е ṅǔm̌ ӑ . іd̄

She'd done the shopping the night before. Seaweed, rice, pickled radish, ham, spinach, carrot, eggs.

She'd searched YouTube for 'gimbap for beginners' and watched it through three times.

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

She couldn't make it ahead of time. Gimbap spoils easily, they say.

Still, it had looked easy enough, so she wasn't worried. Until last night.

She cooked fresh rice. Added sesame oil and salt and mixed it in.

So far, so good.

Wѐ bn о́ v̌ е̌ľ En̄ ū m ä

She beat the eggs and poured them into the frying pan. She was trying to make a rolled egg to put in the gimbap.

She folded it. It tore. She poured again. It tore again.

On the third try it finally held its shape.

Though it came out a little burnt.

She blanched the spinach. Fried the carrots. Cut the ham.

One way or another, the ingredients were ready.

Ẁė b̊ ǹо ṽ е̂l Е́n̂üm̄а̌

She laid out a sheet of seaweed.

She spread rice on top. Spread it evenly, like in the video.

......It wouldn't spread.

The rice stuck to her hands. It clumped up on the seaweed. The rice turned into a lumpy gravel field.

Wetting her hands, she barely managed to spread it out.

She laid the ingredients on top. Pickled radish, ham, spinach, carrot, rolled egg.

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

She rolled it up.

Pop.

The side split open.

The pickled radish poked out. The ham squeezed through.

The other side split too. The spinach slid out.

"Oh, come on!"

W ё b nо̄ v.е̊.l̀ Еn úm а

She pressed it down, hard.

Press one side and the other burst.

She rolled a second one.

This time she used fewer ingredients.

It didn't burst, but it came out less like gimbap and more like a plain seaweed roll.

Just a whole lot of rice.

We b n о̄ vе l Еn um̀.а̃

The third one. She put the ingredients back in and rolled it tight.

She cut it.

In the video, the cross-sections had been pretty, like a rainbow.

So-young's gimbap cross-section looked like it had been bombed. The ingredients were all bunched to one side. The knife didn't cut cleanly, so the gimbap didn't slice, it tore.

She looked at the clock. 6:10.

Three sheets of seaweed, half a pot of rice, every last ingredient, and this was the result.

Е ṅum а̀. ї d́

So-young looked down at the disaster on the cutting board.

"......Let's change the plan."

She unrolled all the burst gimbap.

She combined the rice, the ingredients, the seaweed. She snipped the seaweed into little pieces with scissors.

She chopped the ingredients up small too. Pickled radish, ham, spinach, carrot, rolled egg.

She mixed it all into the rice. Drizzled sesame oil over it once more.

Then she took out the plastic wrap.

She scooped up a handful of rice, set it on the wrap, and shaped it into a ball.

A rice ball.

One. Two. Three. Four. Five.

Five round rice balls, each wrapped in plastic, sat in a neat row in the lunchbox.

"...G-good!"

Ѐ nu̇m̆ а

Not bad.

They were round, all about the same size, with bits of seaweed dotted through them, and they looked pretty convincing.

Not the gimbap she'd planned...... but it was a lunch.

So-young let out a sigh as she closed the lunchbox lid.

"The gimbap has become rice balls...."

6:30.

Еn̄úm а̃. ĭ d

Lee Jun woke up.

He'd started waking up earlier so he could add another layer to the Imonalisa.

Last night's coat had already dried.

Lee Jun quickly got his paint ready and layered more on top.

Layer by layer, it builds up.

A little each day. One pass shows no change, but now, with dozens layered on, the difference was clear.

"Today's done."

Work he'd grown used to by now.

He quickly cleaned up his paints and got ready to leave for the academy.

The table was a mess, covered in stuff.

And beside it, a lunchbox.

"Aunt, what's this?"

"It's outdoor class today. That's your lunch."

Lee Jun opened the lid.

Five round rice balls sat in a row.

Lee Jun tilted his head.

"Isn't it gimbap?"

Enuma ID

Yesterday he'd heard his aunt say she was making gimbap.

Èn ŭ m а. і̇d

But the result wasn't gimbap.

So-young's shoulders slumped.

"I was going to make gimbap...... but it turned into rice balls."

"Why?"

"The sides split open."

Lee Jun tilted his head. He didn't really understand what it meant for gimbap to burst.

Е̇ ṅ ům̃а̄.і̃d

"Can I try one?"

"Yeah. Tell me how it tastes."

Lee Jun picked up a rice ball, peeled off the wrap, and took a bite.

He chewed.

He bit into pickled radish.

Ham too. Spinach too. The taste of sesame oil.

Е ǹu̇ m̄а

"It's good."

Lee Jun said, munching on the rice ball.

"Really?"

"Yeah. It tastes like gimbap."

"......Right. If it tastes like gimbap, that's good enough, I guess."

Either way, it was a relief.

So-young breathed easier.

The yellow van arrived at the academy.

But today, instead of going into the classroom, they switched to a yellow bus.

The whole class piled onto the bus.

"Where are we going today?"

Е̌ ǹ u m.ä

Lee Jun asked, looking out the window.

"Outdoor class! We get to draw outside!"

Chae-rin said, thrilled.

"We're drawing outside today?"

"Yeah! It's kind of like a picnic!"

Yoon-ho cut in.

Е́ n ú m̃ а

"It's a picnic where you draw too. I'm looking forward to the lunch most."

"Me too!"

"You brought a lunch too, right, Lee Jun? Let's trade!"

The bus was a riot of chatter. The kids were more worked up than usual.

The assistant teacher kept sitting the kids back down one by one as they popped up out of their seats.

Lee Jun had his bag on his lap.

Ěn̂ ú.mа. і̃ d̈

Inside the bag, a sketchbook, colored pencils, and his lunch.

Inside that were the rice balls his aunt had made at dawn.

The bus stopped at the park entrance.

It was a small park at the foot of Namsan.

A wide lawn stretched out. Trees stood in rows.

It was early March, so the leaves hadn't all come out yet, but pale green shoots had formed at the tips of the branches.

The kids poured off the bus.

"All right, everyone!"

Min Ji-hye seonsaengnim blew a whistle and gathered the kids together.

"Today's the day we draw outdoors. You can draw anything you can see. Trees, flowers, the sky, your friends, whatever you like. Just don't go outside this area."

As usual, she handed out sketchbooks and crayon sets.

Today a mini picnic mat was added to that.

Е n̄ û m ӓ

"Draw until lunch, and if you want to keep drawing after we eat, you can."

"Okay!"

The kids scattered.

Each found a spot they liked, spread out a mat, and sat down.

Lee Jun looked around and settled at the edge of the lawn.

A big tree stood in front of him. A cherry tree.

Ênūm а .іd

The blossoms hadn't opened yet. Just branches.

But buds had formed at the branch tips. Tiny pink beads.

Lee Jun opened his sketchbook.

He looked at the tree.

There were a lot of branches. They split off from thick to thin. The higher they went, the slimmer they got.

The lower trunk was almost black. The upper branches, brown.

W̄ e b̌nоv̆e l̂ Еn̄ ü m̆а

And the buds at the branch tips. Pink.

Lee Jun started with the trunk, in pencil.

From bottom to top.

[A tree is thick at the bottom and thin at the top. It's like a person's arm. The way it tapers from the shoulder down to the fingertips.]

Lee Jun nodded and drew the trunk.

Starting with a thick line, tapering thinner and thinner.

Where the branches forked. Where they split into a Y.

One side was thicker than the other. Trees weren't symmetrical either.

Lee Jun drew that asymmetry exactly as it was.

Ha-eun, who had settled down beside Lee Jun at some point, snuck a glance at his sketchbook.

"Drawing a tree again?"

Ha-eun had her own sketchbook open in front of her.

She'd been drawing a small flower blooming at the edge of the lawn.

"Yeah. Trees are fun."

"What's fun about trees?"

"The branches are all different. No two branches are the same."

Enuma ID

Ha-eun looked at Lee Jun's sketchbook.

The trunk and branches had been drawn. In pencil lines alone.

Wе b̂n̆ov̊ ě l̃ Ѐ ṅ um̊а

He was carefully working the curve of the trunk, every last twig.

"There aren't even any leaves and it's this complicated?"

"There aren't any leaves, so you can see all the branches. When there are leaves, they get in the way and you can't see them. It's lucky."

"You're a weird one, Lee Jun. Leaves are prettier, obviously."

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

Lee Jun tilted his head.

"No leaves is pretty too, though."

Е n u mа̄ . і̊ d

Yoon-ho came running over. Holding his sketchbook.

"Lee Jun! I drew this! Look, look!"

He thrust out the sketchbook.

A big robot was drawn on it. Colored in red and blue with crayon.

"A robot?"

"Yeah! MechaBot!"

Dilarang mengopy novel dari Enuma.id.

"But the teacher said to draw what you can see."

"Doesn't matter! I feel like drawing a robot!"

Lee Jun nodded.

The teacher had said to draw anything they could see.

And it seemed a robot was what Yoon-ho saw.

Lee Jun looked at Yoon-ho's robot drawing.

Е n̂ù m̈ â . і́ d̃

It had four arms. Four legs too.

"The robot has four arms?"

"It looks stronger that way!"

Lee Jun nodded. He wasn't wrong.

Chae-rin came running over too.

"Look at mine too!"

Е n̊u m̄а . i̊d̊

There was a princess drawn in Chae-rin's sketchbook. A princess standing in a field of flowers.

The dress was pink. There was a crown. Flowers filled the space all around her.

"...There's no princess here, though."

This time it was Ha-eun who said it.

"I wanted to draw Secret Princess!"

"The teacher told us to draw what we can see, remember?"

"It's fine! I've got Secret Princess in my bag!"

Chae-rin said it with total confidence. Ha-eun puffed out her cheeks.

Lee Jun looked at Chae-rin's princess.

A round face. Big eyes. A triangle dress.

The flowers were five circles on a single stem.

Simple. But the princess was smiling. Wide. Her eyes sparkled too.

"The princess is smiling."

"Because the weather's nice today!"

Chae-rin smiled. The same smiling face as the princess.

Lee Jun looked back at his own tree.

He drew buds onto the branches. With pink crayon.

Small dots. At every branch tip.

W е̂b́ nоv e l Е̄n ŭm̃а

Not blossoms yet, just buds. Right before they open.

"When I come back next time, they'll be in bloom, won't they?"

If he got to come again, he wanted to draw the same tree.

Not the bare-branched tree, but the one in full cherry blossom.

The lunchtime they'd all been waiting for arrived.

Ё nùḿ а̂ . іḋ_

The kids gathered and spread their mats out on the lawn.

Lee Jun, Ha-eun, Yoon-ho, Chae-rin. The four of them sat in a row.

Each took out their lunch.

Yoon-ho's lunch. Gimbap his mom had packed.

The cross-sections were pretty. The ingredients lined up like a rainbow.

Character toothpicks were stuck in them.

Chae-rin's lunch.

Sandwiches and fruit. The strawberries were cut into heart shapes.

Ha-eun's lunch.

Inari sushi. Cherry tomatoes in one compartment. Not a gap anywhere.

Lee Jun opened his lunch.

Four rice balls.

Round. Wrapped in plastic. Bits of seaweed dotted through them.

"Is that gimbap, Lee Jun?"

"It's rice balls."

"Rice balls? Rice you made with your fists?"

"My aunt made gimbap, but it burst, so it turned into rice balls."

The kids laughed.

"The gimbap burst?"

"Yeah. The sides split open, she said."

Lee Jun peeled off the wrap and took a bite.

He chewed. He bit into pickled radish. Ham too. The taste of sesame oil.

Just as good as the one he'd eaten that morning.

"Is it good?"

Ha-eun asked.

Lee Jun held one out.

Ha-eun admitted it. A slightly surprised look on her face.

"I want to try one too!"

Lee Jun's rice balls vanished in an instant.

"So good!"

Lee Jun savored the one rice ball he had left.

Because his aunt had made it.

"Your aunt must be a good cook, Lee Jun."

Yoon-ho said, his mouth stuffed full of rice ball.

"You think?"

"Thanks."

Lee Jun took it and ate.

It was sweet and good.

"I'll give you some of my gimbap too!"

"My sandwich too!"

They all traded back and forth.

After lunch.

The kids scattered again and drew.

Lee Jun decided to finish the tree he'd been drawing earlier.

The branches were done. He'd put in the buds too.

W̆еḃ n̄ ō v̈ е̊ l Ёn ū m̀ а

Now it was time to bring out the texture of the trunk.

The bark was cracked. Split with vertical lines.

Lee Jun went up to the tree and felt the bark with his hand.

It was rough. Uneven.

"What are you doing?"

Ha-eun asked.

"Touching it helps me understand it better."

He went back to his sketchbook.

He laid the pencil on its side and rubbed it across the paper.

A rough texture came out. The grain of the bark.

In rougher lines than before.

Lee Jun's tree was coming together.

"For the flowers to bloom. The buds are right here, see?"

Lee Jun pointed at the tips of the branches.

Ha-eun followed his hand and looked up at the tree.

Ha-eun looked down at her own sketchbook.

The tree before it bloomed, the tree in bloom.

He wanted to set the two side by side and look at them.

Still, if Ha-eun wanted the picture, he didn't mind parting with it.

He wanted to draw it beautifully and give it to her, Lee Jun thought.

The two children looked up at the tree side by side.

A breeze blew. The branches swayed.

The buds fluttered gently.
