“HERE’S the key, and here are the white coats I borrowed.”
“Thank you for returning them.”
It was an evening near the end of summer, when the heat was starting to lessen, and Olivia was in the office of the research hall returning the items she’d borrowed.
It was her last day at the Research Institute.
With the public demonstration of the airship complete, she was freed from her obligation as a temporary researcher, as they’d agreed. She had no intention of staying on long-term.

“Thank you.”

Olivia left the room after saying goodbye to the office worker. Elliot was waiting for her outside, leaning against a wall in a gray suit fit for a king.
He smiled at her. “All done?”
“Yes, all done. Let’s go.” Olivia nodded, then looked up at Elliot like she’d remembered something. “Could we actually go up to the roof for a little bit?”
“I don’t mind. Is there something going on?”

“I think the airship should be coming back soon.”
They climbed the stairs to the roof and opened the door to the sky garden. The plants rustled softly in the breeze beneath the twilight sky.
“Over here,” Olivia said as she went over to the railing along the edge of the garden. She looked up into the sky and pointed. “There, you can see it.”
There was a large ship floating in the evening sky, gracefully descending toward them.

“It’s pretty cool, isn’t it?” she smiled.
Elliot looked at her and asked, “Are you sure this is what you want? Leaving the Research Institute? I heard they really tried to keep you.”

“It’s what I want. I came here so I could catch up to my father. And I’m better suited to the shop anyway. Besides…I have you.”
He looked lovingly at her as she stared at the ground, her ears turning strawberry red. Elliot leaned over and gently kissed her on the lips before wrapping his arms around her shoulders.
She rested her weight against him, even more red now.
They stayed there for a while, watching the airship in silence, then left the sky garden and descended the stairs leading to the entrance hall. There, as they were walking toward the exit, Elliot glanced up at the magicometer, lit by the evening sun. He looked to the very top, his eyes crinkled in a smile. “You did well.”
Olivia smiled. “I still have a long way to go, but I worked hard.” She looked up as well, her eyes squinted against the light.
Elliot smiled at her. “Shall we go?”

Their happy voices filled the hall as they walked out.
At the very top of the wall beside the magicometer was an old plaque with Adolphe Carter written on it. Next to it was a brand-new, gleaming plate reading Olivia Carter.
