Chapter 32

Chapter 32. Fieldwork Chief

After Lord Nufeng made his announcement, tonight’s banquet finally dispersed.

Fick had just stood up when several civil officials surrounded him. Booker Tustin patted him on the shoulder, laughing until his eyes narrowed into slits. “Mr. Fick, that bout just now was truly satisfying! Those knights usually rely on the fact that they can fight and treat us like accountants. Today, someone finally vented our anger for us!”

Loren Chell also came over, holding his wine cup and insisting on clinking it with Fick’s. “Great talent, with you around in the future, we civil officials will be able to speak with a bit more backbone!”

Beside them, a thin civil official wearing glasses muttered in a low voice, “If Mr. Fick could be here every day, then when those knights make trouble again, we would at least have someone who could stand up to them…”

Another civil official immediately chimed in, “Exactly, exactly! Young Master Alex, look at a talent like Mr. Fick. Having him be a teacher is such a waste. Why not make him our Royal Advisor for East Saphile? He could be specifically responsible for dealing with those knights!”

“Exactly! With Mr. Fick here, we can straighten our backs in meetings from now on!”

The civil officials all spoke at once, practically wishing they could enshrine Fick on the spot.

Alex stood beside them, a rare smile on his face. He had drunk quite a bit tonight, and his cheeks were slightly flushed, but his ears were still very sharp. Hearing the civil officials’ words, he laughed and scolded them.

“Mr. Fick has only been here for one day, and you already want to steal him away?”

Booker Tustin chuckled. “Second Young Master, aren’t we doing this for your sake? A great talent like Mr. Fick should be placed with us civil officials so he can shield you from attacks every day. Wouldn’t that be better than sending him to the Royal Knight Academy to teach those brats?”

Alex was amused by him and raised his foot as though he were going to kick him. “Get lost! Where Mr. Fick goes is up to him!”

The civil officials burst into laughter, and the atmosphere became as lively as the Holy Year.

Surrounded in the middle, Fick wore a polite smile. Just now, these people had lowered their heads one by one, not daring to utter a sound. Now, they had suddenly become good at social maneuvering.

“Great talent, help me walk.”

There was clear composure in Alex’s voice, and his steps were much faster than usual. How did he look like someone who was drunk?

The two of them slipped out of the banquet hall in a flash and vanished at the end of the corridor.

Booker Tustin coughed, holding his wine cup as he silently turned his head away. Loren Chell lowered his head and stared at the tips of his shoes, pretending to study the patterns on the floor. The other civil officials also scattered one after another, each busying themselves with their own affairs and pretending they had seen nothing.

Alex pulled Fick into a light run all the way through the covered walkway, circled around several courtyard walls, and finally stopped in a garden.

“All right, all right, I am already lost.” Fick shook off his hand and bent over with his hands on his knees, panting. “If you have something to say, say it quickly.”

Alex glanced back. Only after confirming that no one had followed them did he let out a breath of relief.

There was a patch of lawn in the middle of the garden, with several fruit trees planted around it. Their branches were bare, casting sparse shadows beneath the moonlight. Several stones were scattered across the lawn. The larger ones were big enough to sit on, while the smaller ones could only serve as footrests.

Alex sat down on the largest stone, leaned back, and simply lay down. Fick also found a stone beside him and sat down, raising his head to look at the sky.

The night was deep. The moon was almost nowhere to be seen, and the stars were spread densely across the heavens like someone had scattered a handful of shattered silver.

A cold wind blew past. Fick shuddered and subconsciously pulled his clothes tighter around himself.

Alex turned his head and glanced at him, then untied a small waterskin from his waist and handed it over.

“Ginger soup,” he said, wiping the mouth of the bottle with his sleeve. “Drink some and you will not feel cold.”

Fick took it but did not drink. He merely held it in his hand.

Alex’s gaze paused on his face, then he reached out to take it back.

“Do you think I look like I am trying to drug you unconscious and take you to a rebel organization to be its leader?”

Fick did not answer.

Alex hesitated for a moment. His fingers rubbed the mouth of the bottle for a while before he unscrewed the cap himself, tilted his head back, and took a sip. Then he wiped the mouth of the bottle again and handed it over.

Only then did Fick take it and sip a little.

The ginger soup was warm and carried a slight sweetness. As it slid down his throat, it truly warmed him quite a bit.

Alex watched him drink, the corners of his mouth curving slightly.

“I knew I had not misjudged you,” he said, his voice lower than usual. “A great talent is a great talent. Tomorrow, I will bring up the matter of the position again. They will probably agree.”

Fick returned the waterskin to him without answering.

He leaned against the stone and looked at the stars overhead, but what he was thinking about was something else entirely.

At the banquet earlier, those rounds of debate had looked smooth and effortless, but in truth, every round had been a dangerous move. Commander Iron Mountain’s round had been all right, but Vincent’s had nearly led him into a trap. When Marco asked about Heaven, Fick had appeared calm on the surface, but his back had actually been soaked in sweat—if he had not read the scene in Romance of the Three Kingdoms where Qin Mi debated Zhang Wen, today’s effort would have been for nothing.

He suddenly said, “No.”

Alex was very cooperative in looking stunned. “What?”

“Your father and the others will stay here for a month, right?” Fick turned his head to look at him, carrying a bit of roguish handsomeness. “Just wait. Within a month, I will make them invite me to become a Royal Knight teacher.”

Alex smiled and nodded, then lay back down on the stone, pillowing his head on both hands as he looked at the stars in the sky.

“This is what a military noble is,” he murmured as though speaking to himself. “Arrogant, capable, and loyal enough.”

Alex stared at the stars for a while, then suddenly sighed. “So handsome.”

Fick turned his head. “If you have something to say, just say it. We have known each other for this long, and you are still playing this hollow act? We are brothers.”

Since Alex had been seen through, he scratched the back of his head in embarrassment.

“Great talent, you are practically the roundworm in my stomach.” He chuckled twice, then straightened his expression. “Then I will say it directly.”

Fick looked at him.

Alex took a deep breath and said, “I hope that you, great talent, can endure humiliation and bear the burden by first serving as a fieldwork chief at the Royal Knight Middle School.”

Fick sat up curiously. “What does that job do? It is not the security brigade captain, is it?”

Alex restrained his expression. “Even the cleaners will be under your command, so it counts as part of the leadership. What do you think? Are you satisfied?”

Fick: “…”
