Chapter 69
Chapter 69. Crisis at Sea
The sea ship, which had originally been advancing steadily with the help of the sea breeze, had clearly slowed down.
The sound of the hull breaking through the waves had weakened by more than half, and even the sails had lost the bulging tension they usually possessed, moving slowly across the sea.
Fick was staying in his cabin. Sensing something unusual about the ship, he immediately clenched the belt worn close against his waist.
He quickly pushed open the cabin door and walked onto the deck, then loudly asked a sailor hurrying past him why the ship had slowed down.

The sailor stopped, raised a hand to wipe the sweat from his forehead, pointed at the sea outside the ship’s railing, and replied, “Sir, there are quite a few wooden crates and barrels from a wrecked ship floating on the sea ahead. They look like cargo that scattered from a merchant ship after a maritime disaster. Everyone is preparing to salvage them, so the ship slowed down first.”
Fick looked in the direction of the sailor’s voice and saw more than a dozen wooden containers of different sizes floating sparsely amid the shimmering waves in the distance.

Some barrels were half-submerged in the seawater, gently rising and falling with the waves. Some crates had mottled bodies and were still wrapped in broken cables, clearly having fallen from a sunken hull long ago before being carried here by the currents.
The deck instantly became busy, and the salvage work proceeded in full swing.
The sailors divided their tasks clearly. Several people worked together to grasp thick hemp cables, tied the rope ends firmly to iron hooks, then flung them with all their strength toward the floating crates and barrels in the distance. The iron hooks cut through the air and accurately caught the gaps in the wooden objects.
Other sailors who were good swimmers and nimble in movement jumped onto narrow, light canoes. Gripping their oars, they rowed quickly toward the scattered objects on the sea. Avoiding the waves, they used cables to bind the wooden crates and barrels firmly one by one, then dragged them with all their strength toward the large ship.

The waves kept striking the canoes and the hull of the large ship. The sailors worked together, and only after spending nearly half an hour did they salvage all the floating wooden objects onto the deck, piling them into a small heap.
After all the items were brought aboard, the captain walked forward with his hands behind his back, squatted down, and examined the salvaged objects one by one.
His fingertips tapped the wooden planks of the barrels, and he also lifted the lids of several barrels to inspect them.
In the end, the captain only selected a few ordinary-looking empty barrels that were clearly filled with common odds and ends or seawater, then paid a small amount of silver to buy them at market price.

As for the crates with heavy bodies and locks that were rusted but still tightly secured, he waved his hand and signaled for all of them to be taken back to the storage room.
The crowd gradually dispersed, but Fick stood in the corner without moving. The belt tied close against his waist suddenly sent out a faint yet clear warm vibration. This was the belt’s unique reaction.

He slowly walked toward the pile of wooden crates, his gaze sweeping over them one by one. The belt’s vibration grew stronger and weaker in turns, until he stopped in front of the most inconspicuous wooden crate. In that instant, the vibration became especially intense.
The exterior of this crate was dilapidated beyond recognition. The wooden planks were blackened and moldy, and mud from the seabed and rotting seaweed still clung to the corners. A pungent stench of rot spread out from the gaps. Anyone who passed nearby frowned and avoided it, yet the belt reacted to it with abnormal intensity.
“Captain Dendo, may I buy this wooden crate at auction?”
“That will not do, Mr. Wayne. Wooden crates are generally used to hold precious items. According to North Saphile’s rules, all salvaged wooden crates must be kept for public confiscation. Privately picking the locks or trading them will be punished by hanging.”
“All right.”
Fick calmly memorized the crate’s location. He prepared to wait until the night was deep and quiet, when everyone had fallen asleep, then secretly use his special ability to slip into the storage room and investigate what secret was hidden inside the crate.

Night soon enveloped the entire sea. The lights inside the cabins went out one after another, and only a few storm lanterns by the railing gave off a faint glow. The ship was completely silent.
Fick lay on his bed, tossing and turning as he waited for deep night to arrive. His fingertips repeatedly rubbed the belt at his waist, which was still slightly warm. His heart was full of curiosity about that stinking wooden crate.
Fick sat up and asked the belt quietly, “Is there an item belonging to the Death God inside?”
The belt twisted its buckle-end, indicating that there was not.
“Magic Crystals? Gold coins?”
Before he could finish asking, a deafening beastly roar suddenly erupted outside the window.

The roar was rough and violent, unlike the common sea beasts found at sea. Immediately afterward, shrill cries for help and terrified screams broke out one after another, mixed with panicked footsteps exploding across the silent ship.
Fick’s body tensed instantly, but he did not rush out the door at once.

He knew very well that in this sealed ship, when such a strange and dangerous situation suddenly occurred, rashly showing himself might easily cause others to mistake him for the culprit behind the incident and make him a suspect for no reason.
Moreover, the unknown danger was hidden in the darkness. Acting rashly would also place him in peril.
He held his breath and quietly listened to the movements outside the door. His heart beat rapidly in his chest, and his ear pressed tightly against the door panel as he distinguished the sounds outside.
Only when he heard the panicked shouts of young men outside, along with chaotic footsteps and the increasingly clear movement of a group of people leaving together to check the situation, did the clamor gradually converge.

Only then did he slowly rise, place two pieces of Azure Crystal in his mouth, and quietly follow behind the crowd out of the cabin, striding quickly toward the source of the sound.
The crowd surged toward the cabin stairway following the panicked noise. A pungent smell of blood and the foul, musky odor of a beast rushed at them first, mixed with shrill screams that surged wildly up from the lower deck, making everyone’s scalp go numb.
They saw that the entrance between the second and third levels of the cabin was shrouded in darkness. A group of sailors, holding sharp hunting knives and dining forks, had formed a tight circle and were desperately guarding it.
Blue veins bulged on their foreheads, and they roared to embolden themselves, yet the hands gripping their weapons could not stop trembling.

In the center of the circle, uninterrupted screams tore at the heart and lungs. They were accompanied by the muffled sounds of flesh being ripped apart and the deep growls of a beast. Occasionally, droplets of blood splattered onto the cabin walls. The scene was tragic to the extreme.
The passageway on the second deck had already descended into chaos. The frightened passengers huddled together, their faces filled with terror as they leaned forward to look down, only to be scared back repeatedly by the gruesome sight below. Cries and exclamations rose and fell without end.

Fick deliberately fell back a few steps, putting everyone in front of him as a shield. At the same time, he swept his peripheral vision over his surroundings to ensure that no sudden danger had appeared on the second level.
The first mate stood on the middle steps of the stairway, spreading both arms to firmly stop the passengers who wanted to look down. His voice was hoarse and urgent. “Everyone, move back and keep order!”
As he struggled to stabilize the panicked crowd, he turned his head toward the strong young men among them. His eyes were full of pleading as he shouted, “Young men, who is willing to lend a hand? There is a monster hurting people below. The sailors are almost unable to hold it back. Please come down and help us guard the entrance!”
The young men who had originally been both frightened and curious all shook their heads. No one was willing to risk their life for others in such a dark and dangerous environment.
“We are only watching the commotion. Who would be willing to risk their life?”
“I saw several knights in armor on the ship, did I not? Especially that red-haired one.”

“That is right, the young man with the cover of 《Don Quixote》 sewn right into the center of his armor!”
