Chapter 74
Chapter 74. The Wind-Splitting Sound of Koyanxiton
Koyanxiton rarely had several sunny days in a row like this.
As the second city of the Saphile Empire and a strategic stronghold in the north, Koyanxiton also had the nickname of the City of Wind and Snow.
Originally, the Great Karsi River’s waters were swift and violent. During the spring flood season, it could drown half the docks, while in winter, it would thin into a narrow stream. Now, it had been divided by dams into the Left Karsi River and the Right Karsi River, with a steady, safe, and reliable flow.
It was these two rivers that had made Koyanxiton what it was. Built by the current head of North Saphile, it was both the northern outlet for lumber and ironware, and the transfer station for supplies between the inland regions and the frozen-soil plains.

North Saphile was born along the river, and it was also divided by the river. The Lower River District consisted mostly of villages and small towns, and it was relatively underdeveloped.
The Upper River District was home to newly emerging large cities, with Koyanxiton as its representative city. In the workshop district, the rasp of saws in the sawmills, the hammering from blacksmith shops, and the bells of cargo carriages blended into a low rumble from morning until night.

The city’s woodworking industry and ironworking industry complemented one another. Beside every sawmill, there was sure to be a blacksmith shop. Those who made saw blades, forged nails, and hammered axes were lined up one after another along the river.
Every year in late autumn, lumberjacks from the north, merchants from the south, and local craftsmen would pack the city’s taverns and inns to the brim.
Although the city walls were not as magnificent as those of Saint-Denis, they had the ruggedness unique to northern architecture. The walls were built from unpolished gray limestone blocks, with mortar mixed with charcoal filling the gaps. From afar, they looked like a black spine growing out of the frozen earth.
The houses on both sides were mainly wooden structures. Their gable walls faced the street, and their eaves were low. The ground floors were shops selling lumber, ironware, furs, and Magic Crystals. Signboards crowded together densely. Some were carved with axes, some were painted with saws, and some simply had a strip of black iron hanging from them.

People with all kinds of accents and all kinds of clothing crowded into the taverns to bargain. It was impossible to tell who was a proper merchant and who was a desperado.
In the north of the city, near the bend of the river, there was a large stretch of low wooden houses where lumberjacks and their families lived. Chopped firewood was piled in front of the houses, while planks were stacked behind them.
This was Koyanxiton. Rough, cold, and noisy, yet filled with the power of savage growth.
In the southern part of North Yankton City, inside the National Military Witch Academy, the homeroom teacher of First-Year Class A hurried through the corridor. The wind stirred by her steps made the hem of her skirt flutter. With a panicked expression, she rushed straight toward the Class A classroom. She did not even care about the courtesy of knocking before pushing open the classroom door and striding inside.

At this moment, the class monitor was sitting in her exclusive seat by the window, leaning leisurely against the back of her chair. Several exquisite desserts and warm drinks had been placed on the desk before her. She had just ordered the errand-running students under her to buy them specially from a dessert shop outside the academy.
She had been about to pick up her fork and enjoy them when the homeroom teacher’s hurried footsteps interrupted her. She raised her eyes and looked at the homeroom teacher, whose expression was abnormal.

The homeroom teacher quickly walked to the class monitor’s side. Ignoring the curious gazes of the surrounding students, she bent down, lowered her voice, and spoke a few sentences beside the class monitor’s ear at an extremely rapid pace.
The class monitor, whose expression had originally been indifferent, instantly turned pale. The hand holding the fork trembled violently, and the dessert almost slid from the plate. The students around them sensed that something was wrong with the atmosphere and instinctively quieted down, not daring to make a sound.
Without the slightest delay, the class monitor immediately said in a deep voice to the students in the classroom, “Study on your own. No making noise or walking around as you please.” Then she gestured for the homeroom teacher to leave with her.
The class monitor quickly composed herself, forcibly suppressing the stormy waves in her heart. She rose and followed the homeroom teacher. The two walked in a hurry, almost breaking into a brisk stride as they headed toward the homeroom teacher’s private office on the west side of the teaching building.
Neither of them spoke along the way. Their footsteps were hurried, and their bodies gave off a solemn pressure. Teachers and students passing by could not help turning their heads to look, but no one dared to step forward and ask.
After they arrived at the office, the homeroom teacher pushed the door open first, and the class monitor followed her inside. The homeroom teacher immediately closed the heavy wooden door behind them, quickly turned the lock, and shut out all outside gazes and sounds.

After confirming that there was no one around and that they were absolutely safe, the homeroom teacher could no longer maintain her usual composure. She leaned back against the door, her hands trembling slightly, and spoke with a face full of regret. Her voice carried unconcealable panic and lingering fear.
“We were truly too careless. Who could have imagined that the transfer student Alice Louis’s older brother was actually Academician Fick Louis!
“If Fick Louis learns about the arrangements and attitude we had toward Alice before, forget the two of us—even the entire academy will suffer with us! I regret it so much that my intestines have turned green!”
An Academician’s status in the empire was even higher than that of ordinary royal family members. In scholarship, power, and prestige, they stood at the very top. Even if they went to a top Royal University to serve as a department head, they would be more than qualified.
The class monitor forced herself to calm down from her initial shock. Her mind spun rapidly as she quickly sorted through the current situation.
A moment later, she raised her eyes and looked at the homeroom teacher, who was still extremely panicked. “Teacher, when I targeted Alice Louis, I already imagined that this day might come.”

She laid out her plan in a methodical manner. “Our best solution is to secretly hire the fiercest orc tribe near the border and have them pretend to launch a surprise attack on the academy’s fodder yard.
“Do not worry. I will specifically instruct the orc tribe to be ruthless. During this attack, they must think of every possible way to target the humans in the pasture. Ideally, they will kill her in the fodder yard and end this trouble forever.”

Seeing that the homeroom teacher still looked somewhat worried, the class monitor continued adding, “At the same time, I will immediately send a message and dispatch the elite knight order under my family’s Frank Bank headquarters in Koyanxiton. Then, together with the patrol witches from the academy’s main campus, they will pretend to have received the news and rush to the fodder yard to rescue everyone, then slaughter all the orcs.”
After hearing the class monitor’s plan, the panic in the homeroom teacher’s eyes gradually faded.
“So young, yet meticulous, and calm in the face of danger. As expected of the eldest daughter of House Frank, one of the three great commercial noble families.”
“You flatter me, Teacher. These are all common methods. Also, spring has arrived. You should take care to protect your throat.”

“Wait, that wasn’t me. Who’s speaking?”
A suffocating pressure instantly stripped the two of their speech and their struggling breaths!
The air was compressed into a sharp howl. Their eyes bulged, and their faces went from deathly pale to purplish-red in an instant. Their hands futilely clawed at the wrist that had suddenly appeared, while they used defensive magic to resist the pressure on their necks.
“Hm? You are already using defensive magic?”

Fick exerted slightly more strength, and the two women’s lungs became like broken bellows. Every breath carried the bloody sweetness of foam. Their survival instincts made their feet leave the ground, and their toes kicked helplessly.
The two desperately turned their heads. The owner of the wrist was completely shrouded in a sharply tailored pure-black cloak, while his face was hidden behind a silver, flowing-light mask that covered half of it.

“It was not in vain that I spent the entire morning asking around. I only just found you two now.” A deep, magnetic voice sounded in the office, carrying a relaxed tone as if he were inspecting toys.
“The weather happens to be nice. How about the two of you accompany me for a stroll?” Fick bit off a corner of the Black Crystal in his mouth.
...
A continuous rumble suddenly came from within the school, like the hoofbeats of a giant beast.
The entire Military Witch Academy shook violently, and the window frames let out piercing wails.
Downstairs, panicked students and teachers fled in every direction. Everyone thought they had encountered an enemy air raid or an orc siege. Screams and alarm bells instantly tore apart the tranquility of the sunny day.

“It is the wind-breaking sound of a quasi-A-rank knight! And the speed is extremely fast!”
At the top of the teaching building, a Grand Witch reacted with astonishing speed. Her elaborate mage robe instantly swelled, wind spirals coiling around her body as she chanted rapidly, “Grand Magic · Wind Acceleration!”
The Military Witch Academy had three Grand Witches on rotating guard duty year-round. This was the highest standard of security the empire provided for a witch academy.
Her entire body turned into an afterimage. She unleashed her strongest advance magic and chased toward the source of the sound.
However, no matter how she pushed her mana, that black figure remained like an untouchable bolt of lightning, far ahead of her.
That kind of absolute speed suppression made even this experienced and knowledgeable Grand Witch feel a chill rising from the bottom of her heart.

Even a quasi-A-rank knight should not possess such inhuman sustained explosive power.
Koyanxiton’s buildings had always been known for their sturdiness and practicality, yet at this moment, this person had forcibly carved a long line straight through them. Crushed stones rained down onto the streets.
