Chapter 85
Chapter 85. Winning Over Gar Rayne
Gar stood in place, watching the scene before him and listening to his wife’s instructions. His eyes instantly reddened, and scalding tears swirled in them.
Regret, gratitude, and emotion blocked his chest. Sourness and relief lodged in his throat.
No matter what, he had never imagined that when he had gambled himself into ruin and reached the end of the road, the one who would step in and help him solve his greatest problem would be this unfamiliar human he had only just met.
Uncle Songtie looked at Gar’s dazed expression and glared at him again. This time, however, there was a little less hostility in his scolding and a little more expectation toward someone who had failed to live up to his potential.

“You bastard. This gentleman is clearly your creditor, yet not only does he not rush you or force you, he even takes out his own money to help you and thinks of you in every way. And what about you, you walking embarrassment? You stand there with a long face and do not show the slightest response!
“If I were a few years younger, how could such a good thing ever have fallen to you?”

Uncle Songtie’s words woke Gar up. His knees suddenly bent, and he heavily dropped to one knee. He placed his right hand over his chest, raised his head to look at Fick, and said with incomparable solemnity:
“I, Gar, swear in the name of the grassland. In this life, I am willing to be loyal to you, to serve you loyally in all matters, and to never harbor a second heart! I beg you to grant me a surname. I am willing to follow you for life!”
Fick understood. The beastman race had always been free-spirited. Most of them had only names and no surnames. Only when they sincerely admired and followed a leader, regarding that person as the one and only lord of their life, would they beg that person to grant them a surname. This was the most solemn loyalty ceremony among beastmen.
He had originally been worried that traveling with two newly acquired B-rank companions would be somewhat dangerous. Now that Gar had submitted, Fick could feel at ease. Even if this Pot Knight, who wanted nothing at all, really was a mole, there would be someone to deal with him.

Fick thought of the way Old Black Song took in subordinates in 《Water Margin》. Imitating it, he hurriedly stepped forward and reached out to help the kneeling Gar up, then spoke in a teasing tone.
“Since you are a lion, I will call you Rayne. Gar Rayne. Follow me and work properly. Perhaps once I finish my business next month, I will let you come back for a reunion.”
When the pig-man and the two bear-men saw this, they hurried forward and helped Uncle Songtie tidy up the withered firewood in the courtyard. Then they went back inside to help Gar pack a simple bag. Their movements were quick, and they were all happy that their big brother had found proper work.
Fick looked at the three beastmen before him and suddenly said, “I am planning to buy some vegetables and ingredients for making desserts. I need three people to carry them back home.”

No matter how slow-witted the pig-man and the two bear-men were, they understood the implication in Fick’s words. Their eyes filled with excitement and joy.
The three beastmen all dropped to one knee at once. Imitating Gar, they placed their right hands over their chests, gave Fick a solemn salute, and said in unison:

“We have no homes or families. We are willing to swear in the name of the grassland and serve you loyally, sir. We beg you to grant us surnames. We will follow you for life and never go back on our word!”
Looking at the three beastmen still kneeling before him, Fick already had a plan in mind.
When doing great things, the most important thing was unity. It was like how, in his previous life, some companies would ask why a person had left their last job during recruitment. If he was stabbed in the back at a critical moment, he did not have some shameless bug that could let him undo the decision.
These three beastmen looked burly and somewhat simple-minded. Although they were only C-rank, even if he did not bring them along to rob Frank Bank, they would still be good enough to unclog toilets at his house, watch the gate, and serve as guards in the future.
He slowly stepped forward and asked in a calm tone, “Since the three of you are willing to follow me, first tell me your names so that I know how to address you.”
Hearing this, the kneeling pig-man and the two bear-men exchanged a glance. Their faces all showed difficulty. Then they lowered their heads again, and their voices carried a trace of guilt and humility as they slowly said together, “In answer to you, sir, we have no names.”

Fick felt slightly surprised. Just as he was about to ask, the pig-man beastman at the front hurriedly raised his head and respectfully explained. His voice was full of the rules and obsessions carved deep into the beastman race.
“Sir, you may not know this, but our beastman race has always revered strength above all. Our rules have always been strict. Only the strong are qualified to possess names of their own. This has been a custom passed down on the grasslands for a thousand years.
“Beastmen are not like humans, who can keep improving. Generally, by the age of eighteen, our upper limit in strength is decided, just like how a bird without wings cannot fly.
“We are already in our thirties and are still C-rank beastmen. Our strength is low. Among our people, we can only be referred to by our beast forms and tribes. We are not worthy of having names of our own.”
The two foolish bears beside him quickly echoed as well, their rough palms clenched tightly against their chests.
“Our tribes have rules. A C-rank beastman is only qualified to have his own name after he defeats a B-rank beastman or human knight in an upright battle and wins everyone’s recognition. That is the honor by which we beastmen prove ourselves.”

They had no complaints at all. Instead, they were filled with reverence for these rules, as well as longing to possess names and become strong.
After listening, Fick inwardly complained that they even had to be so old-fashioned about taking a name. No wonder beastmen had declined.

But Fick also felt even more reassured. Although their strength was lacking, they followed rules and had convictions. Their character was far more reliable than those who resorted to opportunistic tricks.
He immediately spoke in a clear voice, completely dispelling their concerns. “I see. Since these are the rules of your people, I naturally respect them. By the way, I only cover food and lodging.”
One bear-man scratched his head. “Being able to work with Big Brother is enough. Food and lodging are fine. We are not like Big Brother. We basically do not spend money.”
“Same for me. If I can eat a couple mouthfuls of honey every month, I will be unbelievably happy.”

“We still do not know how we should address you from now on.”
“Bruce Wayne. I do not care much for formalities.”
The pig-man was the first to cup his hands, and the two bears copied him quite decently. “Yes, Young Master Wayne.”
After speaking, the three slowly stood up, their faces filled with irrepressible joy and motivation. They bowed deeply to Fick, then turned and quickly ran toward their respective residences.

Before long, the three had packed their simple bags and returned. They stood to the side, their postures straight, waiting quietly with Gar for Fick’s instructions.
When Fick saw that the Pot Knight was not moving, he asked, “What about you, Brother Pot?”
Е̊ n̆ ŭ m̂ ӑ
The Pot Knight waved his hand, indicating that he had no luggage.
The five figures each carried bulging bundles on their backs, and in their hands, they held bags filled with fresh vegetables, flour, butter, honey, and other ingredients, as well as pots, bowls, ladles, basins, coarse-cloth bedding, and other daily necessities.
The heavy items weighed down the beastman men’s steps slightly, but they did not utter a single complaint. They quietly followed Fick all the way onto the carriage.
…
When they reached the small house, Fick raised his hand and gently knocked on the wooden door. Soon, light footsteps came from inside.
With a creak, the wooden door was pulled open from within. Alice poked her face out. She first looked at Fick, then was immediately startled by the mighty group behind him.

“Big Brother, did you recruit four beastmen so that after we rob the bank, you can knock them out and use them as the first stepping stones for me to become a Grand Witch?”
“Has Big Brother ever taught you that when you are plotting, you have to keep your voice down?”
The Pot Knight: You cannot see me. You cannot see me.
Gar and the three beastmen: They were joking, right?
