Chapter 282 - Calamity (8)
Chapter 282: Calamity (8)
TL/ED – Enuma ID
There was exactly one rule for the places I subjected to Deep Sea Conversion. They had to be uninhabited.
With places like that, there was no need to worry about whether anyone had failed to evacuate. But since the entire world had to be submerged, eventually even the inhabited places would have to be turned into Deep Sea.
I suppose it was inevitable that resentment would pile up among people who had watched the homes they’d lived in all their lives sink beneath the water.

“Ugh, I’m sorry…”
“It’s fine. I just didn’t expect them to resort to something like that.”

I gave a few light pats on the head of Linmel, who stood covered in dust with a face on the verge of tears.
Not every nation had followed Sharmia’s word with an “Ah, yep, understood~” and filed into the Underground Cities.
Some would rather die than watch their own cities sink.
Some even went further-

“So the Outer God has finally graced us with his presence.”
-and regarded me as an enemy.
A wide-open plain without so much as a single tree to hide behind.
The Knights all had their swords leveled. Not at me, but at the necks of the other citizens, whose faces were set with resolve.

A pathetic threat. Though the fact that even the hostages were on their side made it a bit of a headache.
For Linmel, doing anything against lunatics like these would have been difficult. She might be a Knight, but she was still young.

“That won’t work on me. If you have something to say, make it quick.”
Naturally, there was no way that suicide would be permitted in front of me.
Those Knights hadn’t noticed, but from the moment I arrived here, even their every last breath had been in the palm of my hand.
Knocking them all out where they stood and tossing them into an Underground City would have been nothing- but if they caused a riot inside the Underground City, that would be a problem, so I felt the need to straighten them out a little.
The old veteran who appeared to be the Knights’ leader stepped forward, fully on guard.
“We know you are a transcendent being. But mock us no further. We, at least, will not be deceived!”

“I have no idea what you think I’m deceiving you about.”
“Are you not lying? Ever since your Descent, the world has done nothing but sink, bit by bit. Heaven shows no change apart from that wound. And even that wound appeared not long before you did.”
“So you’re saying this is all a scheme I staged myself?”
“Indeed. Is it not a plot to devour the world without interference from us?”
I let out a deep sigh and rubbed my temples.
Void hadn’t taken any action.

No matter what I did, he simply stayed still. Unsettling as that was, the work itself was proceeding very smoothly.
But since that process could look rather different to ordinary people like these, situations that could only be called rebellions broke out frequently.

Truth be told, this was already the ninth one this week alone.
“In the end, this world will become an ocean, and we will all drown in the Underground Cities. We have not the slightest intention of walking into our own graves. We would sooner die!”
The swords that had been aimed at the citizens’ necks turned toward me. The Knights’ eyes gleamed with grim ferocity, as if they had resolved to throw their lives away.
As the Demon King facing off against these heroes, I probably should have given them a wicked laugh to complete the picture, but I’d been through this far too many times. I simply went straight for the solution that had proven most effective across the past eight rebellions.

“First, let me just correct a misunderstanding.”
“We know you sweet-talked the Emperor of the Empire with that silver tongue of yours! No matter what you say, our resolve will not waver…”
“Yes, yes. Of course I’ll fight you. But let me ask a few things first. If I’m sinking the world, why would I bother evacuating all of you?”
“Obviously because it would be inconvenient if we resisted!”

“And that right there is already a huge misunderstanding.”
-Snap. The moment I flicked my fingers, every charging Knight froze mid-motion, as if seized by an invisible hand.

“…!”
“All I do these days is sleep, wake up, fight Outer Gods, and go back to sleep. Do you have any idea how dreadful that is? Look at these dark circles. They’re worse than my master’s.”
“Wh-What are you talking about…”
“Since we’re inside the Deep Sea, I do win in the end, but the way they thrash and resist along the way… It’s absolutely brutal. Haa…”
I scratched my head and worked the stiffness out of my neck.
It was no exaggeration. Needing to build up strength for the final battle, I’d been spending nearly all day, every day hunting down Outer Gods and beating them senseless.

However weakened they were, an Outer God was still an Outer God, and fighting them drained both body and mind. To the point where work like this could honestly be called a breather.
“I’m not belittling you Knights, truly. But I’m out there fighting things like that. I’m not asking for your understanding and telling you to evacuate because humans are too much for me to handle. It’s simply because I want to save you.”
Despite my calm, measured explanation, the old veteran’s face flushed red, as if he’d taken it as nothing but an insult.
“Ngh… Release this! Now!”
“If that’s what you want, sure.”
-Snap. I flicked my fingers again, and the Knights who had been struggling slammed face-first into the ground, kicking up clouds of dust.

Watching the bewildered band of Knights, I settled down on the ground and looked at them.
“Go ahead, have at it until you’re satisfied. I’ll be taking a little rest in the meantime.”

“…”
The Knights stood dazed for a moment, then gritted their teeth, charged in again, and slashed their swords across my neck.
But no blood flowed. The blades passed clean through and out the other side of my neck without any resistance, as if cutting through empty air.
“What….!”

“It won’t do much good. These days I’m closer to the Deep Sea than to a human. Cutting me with a sword is…”
“Move aside! I shall do it!”
The old veteran walked out from behind the dumbfounded Knights and produced a bow and arrow that looked terribly rusted.
It was a weapon that hardly suited his burly frame. As I watched with interest, he spoke up proudly.

“Let us see just how far that boasting of yours goes!”
-Fwip! The arrow shot from the string drawn to its limit and pierced straight through my head.

Naturally, the arrow thudded limply into the ground behind me. Given that swords had done the same, it was only logical, but the old veteran’s face was instantly dyed with despair.
“I-Impossible…! This bow and arrow were supposed to…”
“By now, I’d like you to understand that I’m not forcibly relocating you because I lack the power to do otherwise. Have you changed your mind, by any chance?”
“…As if I would.”
The old veteran gritted his teeth again and glared at me.
“Even if you truly mean to save us, all we will receive in return is an ocean without a single handspan of land left. If my children and I must spend our entire lives aboard ships, then I would sooner choose death.”

“I keep telling you, once I take down Void, I’ll drain the water right back out.”
“If that were true, it would mean you are a transcendent being acting solely to save us, with no other purpose whatsoever. Do you truly believe that makes sense?”
“Argh, seriously.”
This was exactly why acting out of nothing but good intentions made things difficult.
Fortunately, Sharmia had prepared for situations like this as well.
“I’m not doing this for nothing in return.”
Ё ñu m̀а̀
“…What did you say?”
“The one who summoned me was Princess Sharmia-nim. She promised that for the next ten years, she would offer me the Empire, along with half of all the children born within it, as Sacrifices.”

“H-How monstrous!!”
The old veteran’s face contorted with horror and disgust. He looked at me as if beholding something that wasn’t even human.
Since I genuinely wasn’t human, I had no grounds for complaint. I continued, perfectly nonchalant.
“According to the terms of the contract, I’m to receive the Empire’s children as Sacrifices for the next several hundred years. So why would I kill any of you? Every one of you will be producing Sacrifices for me down the line.”
W̊ еbńо́v̈ ѐ l̄ È n_ümа̇
“Did you think we would hear that and simply say yes?!”
“That said, I’ll only be taking people of the Empire. Those were the terms of the contract.”
“…?”
I gently coaxed the old veteran, who stood there puzzled, failing to grasp my meaning.

“Since you keep gathering other citizens of the Empire here and shrinking my pool of Sacrifices, let’s compromise. Once all of this is over, leave the Empire. Do that, and I won’t devour your descendants.”
“Are you telling us to betray the Empire?”
Ŵ еb̊ n̈ о v̂ е̃ l̊ E ňu m̊ а̃
“Better than having your descendants devoured for a hundred years, no? But there’s one more condition. It seems there’s some coalition of nations resisting the relocation. Tell me exactly which ones are in it, and I swear your descendants, at the very least, will never be taken as Sacrifices.”
“…”
Reading a hint of hesitation in the old veteran’s expression, I let out a sigh of relief.
He was a proper leader. The kind of man who could act with boundless selfishness for the sake of his own people.
“You’ll need time to think it over, so I’ll take my leave for now. After all, you could hack at me here for an hour and I still wouldn’t die. I look forward to a positive answer when I return. If I don’t get one, well, we’ll have that bloodbath you wanted, so be ready.”
“…”

The old veteran kept his head bowed to the very end, giving me not a single word in reply.
Though the answer would no doubt turn out the same as all the other nations’.
I stretched and returned to the Capital through a Puddle, together with Linmel, who had been waiting behind me.
“Oh man… I’m dead tired.”
“You worked so hard. And I’m sorry… for calling you over something so trivial…”
“I told you, it’s not trivial. If anything comes up again, call me anytime.”
Е ǹ û m̆ а̂
If anything, it would have been a far bigger problem if Linmel had killed all those people herself. The remaining nations might have only hardened their will to resist.
Conversely, with the rebellion suppressed and my excuse gone, the thought of having to go back to hunting Outer Gods left me endlessly gloomy.

The most horrible part was that, not knowing how strong Void was, I could never afford to rest. Just as I was about to depart for the Deep Sea again with that thought, Linmel caught my sleeve.
“Um, Jern. Are you off to hunt those Outer God things again?”
“Hm? Yeah. What’s up?”
“…Couldn’t I help?”
Ẽn̄ ům̊а́ . id_
“Huh?”
At the bright, earnest look in Linmel’s eyes, I was reminded once again that she had never met any Outer God besides me, and I gave her a light smile.
“I appreciate the thought, but this is something I have to do alone. Otherwise I can’t get stronger. It’s training, you see. Training.”
“I see…”

Linmel nodded, then fidgeted for a moment before throwing out another question.
“Then when that Void guy comes down- can I fight alongside you then?”

“…”
For a moment, I was at a loss for words.
Linmel was, of course, a powerful Knight. A monster so absurd that even I could hardly believe she was human. In a good way.
But an Outer God was a different realm entirely.
“…Of course.”
Still, I made a point of nodding.

“It’ll be dangerous, but if you keep training hard, I promise I’ll call for you. So wait for me.”
“Yeah! Got it!”
It was a lie I had no choice but to tell.
The more Outer Gods I brought down, the wider the Deep Sea spread-
the more keenly I felt just how high above Heaven truly was.
‘If I’m going to die, I’ll die alone. Oh well.’

It seemed my final battle would be a rather lonely one.
